Experiment 5: In-Lab Data Collection

RAW DATA AND OBSERVATIONS (complete tables 1 and 2 during lab; complete table 3
either during lab, or after lab, depending on how your data is shared with the rest of your lab
section)

Remember to remove highlighted text before the due date.

Include explanations and reasoning for additional amounts of reagent or yeast added to
reaction. Present your data in the figures and tables below.

Observation Summary

Complete after lab by summarizing your observations from above.

Summarize your observations of each of the three chemical reactions used during the experiment.
Assess how they were similar or different from one another and how your observations may have
differed for different trials. If possible, include any observations that may hint at a certain reaction
being stoichiometric or catalytic.

Tables that have complex/ difficult to understand data should be accompanied by a caption which
helps the reader understand what the data means and what conclusions can be drawn from the data
in the table. Table notes can also be used to expand upon observations and give more information
about the data that was collected.

# First (units) (units) (distance flown, loudness of ignition, etc.)

Note: Table 3 should be similar to Table 5.1 in your lab manual and will include relevant data from other
groups in your class. However, instead of copying the information in the same order that it was first
recorded on the board or spreadsheet, order your table entries in the way that best supports or refutes
your group’s results for the parameter that you chose to optimize. Use Excel’s sort function to make this
extremely easy!

CHEM 101L Post-Lab 5 Fall 2019

Insert Excel plot showing comparison of your group data and class data
vs. the independent variable you chose to optimize. (Choose the graph
style that best suits your comparison. E.g. scatter plot of distance traveled
vs. amount of H2 fuel; bar graph of distance for H2 added 1st, O2 added 1st,
etc. Do you need any error bars on your graph?

Insert caption for Figure 1.

Make sure to have original titles for your figures that explain results.

Post-Lab Discussion Questions

Answer the following questions with complete sentences. Please restrict your answers from 1-2
sentences. Remember to remove all highlighted text before you submit!

1. (4) Consider the two gas-forming reactions, one of which is catalytic and one stoichiometric.
Can you differentiate between these reactions based on your observations? What conditions
of the reaction were unexpected or complicated your results?

2. (2) Based on your observations, is the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen an exothermic or
endothermic reaction? Cite specific observations to support your conclusion.

3. (3) Consider your initial hypothesis and the variables you tested. Based on the balanced
equation and your observations predict the optimal conditions for the variables you tested
(answer N/A if you did not test the variable below).

Optimal ratio of H2:O2

Optimal order of addition of H2 and O2

(3) Support your answer with your data (reference the data and table above) and sound
reasoning.

4. (8) Based on the data in your tables and figure above, which of your predictions can be
supported or refuted? How did your results compare with your predictions? Remember to
make the strongest case your data will support, even if the results are not as obvious as you
might like. Don't overstate your certainty, but don't dismiss your results.

5. (4) What role did the stoichiometry of the combustion reaction play in your predictions
and/or your analysis of the results? How might other untracked variables have played a
role?

DISCUSSION of RESULTS and ERROR (10) (4-6 sentences)

Using the answers to the previous set of questions for assistance, write a brief, thoughtful discussion of
your findings for this experiment. A discussion should be an analysis of the data you collected during
the experiment with a focus on important comparisons between data sets and your hypotheses. Include
actual numbers in your discussion and reference data tables and figures when relating your results.
Specifically, relate your results to the results obtained by other groups and offer some comparison
between them. Discuss whether your independent variable had a strong effect on the distance the
rocket flew, while also thinking about possible sources of error and how they affected your results.
Always refer to specific data and examples from the experiment to support your reasoning. Remember
to include sources of error, the extent to which errors are random or systemic, whether these errors
would primarily affect accuracy or precision, the extent to which impurities could change the results,
and changes you might make to reduce experimental uncertainty. Consider the possibility that your
hypothesis was not correct, and if not, try to assess other factors that might have been more important
in influencing the results.

CONCLUSION (6)

Write a brief conclusion making the strongest statement you can make relating your experimental
results/data to the purpose statement developed in your pre-lab. Do not make broad generalizations
and try to make the strongest statement that your DATA support. (1-2 sentences)
