CE 2310 Mechanics of Materials

Assignment – 8 Due: 1st Nov 2019

All problems will be graded and are required to be submitted:

1. A simple beam ABCDE supports a uniform load of intensity q . The moment of inertia
in the central part of the beam (BCD) is twice the moment of inertia in the end parts
(AB and DE). Find the deflection at the midpoint C of the beam using Castigliano’s
theorem.

2. The cantilever beam ACB is subjected to a uniform load of intensity q acting between
points A and C. Determine the angle of rotation at the free end A using Castigliano’s
theorem.

3. a) Using Castigliano’s theorem, determine the deflection of point B in the direction of

the force F for the steel bar. Let the distance (length) from O to A be the variable
‘lOA‘and the distance (length) from A to B the variable ‘lAB’ and solve using variables
only first. That is, get the deflection in terms of F, lAB, lOA, A, I, J, E, G. Next, also express
A, I, and J in terms of the diameter d, and express the deflection in terms of variables
FB, lAB, lOA, d, E, G.
b) Attempt to identify "in words" the contribution of each term in your expression for
the deflection from part (a.). Evaluate each term numerically and also the total
deflection. Comment on the terms that are the major contributors to the total
deflection value. (Let F=100 N, d=10mm, E=205 GPa and ν=0.30.)

4. A spherical steel pressure vessel (diameter 480 mm, thickness 8.0 mm) is coated with
brittle lacquer that cracks when the strain reaches 150 X 10-6 . What internal pressure
p will cause the lacquer to develop cracks? (Assume E=205 GPa and ν=0.30.)

5. A pressurized steel tank is constructed with a helical weld that makes an angle a=60°
with the longitudinal axis. The tank has radius as 0.5 m, wall thickness t as 15 mm,
and internal pressure p as 2.4 MPa. Let the modulus of elasticity E be 200 GPa and
Poisson’s ratio be 0.30. Determine the following quantities for the cylindrical part of
the tank: (a) the circumferential and longitudinal stresses, (b) the maximum in-plane
and out-of-plane shear stresses, (c) the circumferential and longitudinal strains, and
(d) the normal and shear stresses acting on planes parallel and perpendicular to the
weld (show these stresses on a properly oriented stress element).

6. A cylinder filled with oil is under pressure from a piston, as shown in the figure. The
diameter d of the piston is 90 mm. and the compressive force F is 42 kN. The

maximum allowable shear stress in the wall of the cylinder is 40 MPa. What is the
minimum permissible thickness of the cylinder wall?
