3rd Grade- Adjectives With Music

Objective:
The student will be able to correctly identify and write what an adjective is and how to
properly use an adjective 90% of the time. The student will be able to explain their
interpretation of the song and how it made them feel.

TEKS 3.22 Oral and Written Conventions/Conventions. Students understand the function
of and use the conventions of academic language when speaking and writing. Students
continue to apply earlier standards with greater complexity. Students are expected to:
(A) use and understand the function of the following parts of speech in the context
of reading, writing, and speaking:
(iii) adjectives (e.g., descriptive: wooden, rectangular; limiting: this, that;
articles: a, an, the)

Materials:
Dry Erase Board or Chalk Board
Disney’s The Little Mermaid CD
Disney’s The Little Mermaid song lyrics
Adjective List Worksheet
Pencils and Paper

Procedure:
1. Review Adjective definition and how they are used.
A. On your white board, write sentences that include adjectives. Have the
students identify the adjective in the sentence. Have the students
create their own sentences using adjective for their classmates to find the
adjectives.
B. Review how adjectives can be used when speaking, listening and
writing. Adjective can also be used to describe the way a person
feels.
2. Introduce the lesson and instructions for completing the Adjective List
Worksheet
A. Before you begin to play the “Kiss the Girl” from Disney’s A Little
Mermaid, tell the students they are expected to listen to the song
and write down the adjectives they identify in the song under the
section for adjectives heard, and when the song is done, write
down words that describe how they felt while listening to the song
under the column for adjective we felt.
3. Discussion/Conclusion
A. When the song is over and the students have completed their
worksheet, have them first tell you what adjectives they heard in
the song and then discuss how the song made them feel.

Assessment:
1. Collect the Adjective List worksheet to use to assess their understanding of
adjectives. Compare their words to the list of adjectives you have identified from the
lyrics.
