2 1 ENSURING SAFETY

1. Precautions for safe operation

Be especially aware of the following points in order to prevent potentially
dangerous situations.

WARNING
To prevent electrical shocks from the AC power
supply, make sure that the :Avanxis IV is properly
grounded in accordance with local regulations. The
ground wire must be used only for the :Avanxis IV.

To prevent accidents resulting from electrical

overload, install an overload breaker to prevent
overloads on the power supply side when connecting
the power supply to the :Avanxis IV.

To prevent accidents resulting from electrical leakage,

install an earth leakage breaker to prevent leakage
current on the power supply side when connecting
the power supply to the :Avanxis IV.

For the power cable of the :Avanxis IV, use a cable

with a rating suitable not only for normal current, but
that also prevents voltage drop due to the start-up
current. Also, use fuses, breakers, and switches with
ratings that prevent damage to the :Avanxis IV.

Have an electrician or other qualified person select

the above items and perform the connection work.

To ensure safety, caution labels are attached to

dangerous parts of the :Avanxis IV. Follow the
instructions on each label.

The caution labels for preventing danger are

important. Do not peel them off, cover them, erase
the text on them, or do anything else that impairs their
effectiveness.

:Avanxis IV User's Guide

1 ENSURING SAFETY 3

Never operate the machine when there is gas in the

air that might ignite or explode. An accident may
occur resulting in an explosion or other disaster.

The :Avanxis IV uses a laser diode for its optical

source. Do not look directly at the light. It can injure
your eyes.

When the power switch of the :Avanxis IV is turned

on, do not remove the protective covers. Do not
under any circumstances touch the inside of the
:Avanxis IV when the power is on, as there is a
danger of electrical shock from the high voltage
power sources inside the :Avanxis IV.

To ensure the operator’s safety, the :Avanxis IV is

equipped with various interlocks. Except for when
service personnel is performing maintenance, never
release these interlocks. If the :Avanxis IV is
operated with these interlocks released, serious
injury or damage to the machine may result.

Do not touch any rotating parts.

Since the :Avanxis IV has a built-in power supply,

install a powder fire extinguisher nearby in case
there is a fire.

Never use water or foam fire extinguishers to put out

fires near the :Avanxis IV since there is the
possibility of an electric shock.

Never cover the :Avanxis IV with a cloth or block the

vents. The internal blower may heat up and cause a
fire.

:Avanxis IV User's Guide

4 1 ENSURING SAFETY

Before performing inspection or maintenance work,

first turn OFF the power of the :Avanxis IV, and then
be sure to turn OFF the breaker on the power supply
side. To prevent other people from accidentally
turning on the power during maintenance or
inspection, attach a warning sign saying “Do not
turn ON power” on the breaker side.

CAUTION
If the :Avanxis IV does not operate normally, see
“Chapter 7 Maintenance”. If an abnormal noise is
made or smoke appears, first turn OFF the power
switch of the :Avanxis IV and then turn OFF the
breaker on the power supply side. After that, contact
your local Agfa service organization.

Do not leave the :Avanxis IV operating unattended

continuously for long periods of time. Operation
throughout the night is especially dangerous.

:Avanxis IV User's Guide

2 INSTALLATION 5

2.3 Vibration
Since vibration has an adverse affect on the :Avanxis IV’s output quality,
take the recommended precautions in the following situations.
• If trains, trucks, or other large vehicles frequently pass near the
:Avanxis IV, perform the necessary vibration tests to check whether
the vibrations are above normal levels.
• If an air conditioner, printing machine, proof press, compressor, or
other vibration source is located near the :Avanxis IV, shock waves or
resonance may damage it. If this is the case, contact your local Agfa
service organization for assistance with countermeasures to stop the
vibrations.
• The installation standard of the :Avanxis IV is below 0.05 m/s2 (5.0
Gal) in both the vertical and horizontal directions (between 0 to 60 Hz).

2.4 Air conditioning

Maintain the indoor conditions of the installation location as follows.
• Operating temperature range: 23±5°C (73.4±9°F) (with no drastic or
sudden temperature changes)
• Operating humidity range: 60±10%RH (no condensation)
• Downtime temperature range (e.g., nighttime, etc): 15 to 33°C (59 to
91.4°F)
• Downtime humidity range (e.g., nighttime, etc): 30 to 80%
• During the middle of the winter and summer seasons, the daytime
operating room temperature may differ greatly from the nighttime
temperature. When such temperature differences occur, the optical
system’s axis may temporarily shift and its precision may be affected
while the machine is warming up. In this situation, install an air
conditioner with a timer, and set it to start at least two hours before the
beginning of operation. Set it to adjust the ambient temperature to a
suitable level to minimize warm-up time when you start operations.
• Approximately 1400 kJ (340 kcal or 1300 BTU) of heat is given off by
the :Avanxis IV. Always take this into consideration when installing
the room’s air conditioning system.
• Do not operate the :Avanxis IV work room’s air conditioning system
causing sudden and/or extreme temperature changes. Also, the

:Avanxis IV User's Guide

6 2 INSTALLATION

:Avanxis IV should not be placed directly in the path of the air output
from an air conditioner.
• Keep the atmospheric pressure in the :Avanxis IV room slightly higher
than that of adjacent rooms. Continuous introduction of outside air
will optimize the :Avanxis IV’s performance.

Caution Operations performed in an inadequate temperature

environment can lead to reduced registration accuracy of
the media and therefore appropriate precautions must be
taken to prevent this.

2.5 Cleanliness of the room where the :Avanxis IV is installed

Dust can cause serious damage to the :Avanxis IV, so always be sure to
keep the operating environment clean. The recommended floating dust
density inside the room is 0.1 mg/m3 (6.3 x 10-9 lb/ft3).
• The :Avanxis IV incorporates a precision optical system. Any dirt or
dust on the lenses or mirrors can adversely affect resolution, so the
system should be kept extremely clean.
• Avoid using rugs or carpets that create dust. Protect against dust
generation by installing urethane resin or linoleum mats.
• Place an adhesive-type dust-prevention mat at the room entrance.
• Do not allow smoking in the room.

2.6 Film processor installation

To install the exclusive film processor (:Avanxis IV filmprocessor) to the
:Avanxis IV, water supply and drain piping to the film processor are
required. Exhaust is necessary since the gas generated in the film
processor negatively affects the :Avanxis IV.
Run the :Avanxis IV for 24 hours using the exhaust fan and exhaust duct
which were provided with the film processor to exhaust the generated gas
to the outside.
Please refer to “2.2 Installation Space and Layout” in this chapter and “2.
External dimensions diagram” in chapter 11 for the connection layout.

2.7 Power supply specifications

■ Power supply condition during operation

Single phase 100 to 120 V AC power supply or a 200 to 240 V AC power
supply (at 50/60 Hz)
With a 100 V power supply, the :Avanxis IV consumes 0.4 kW at 4.0 A.
(Rush current is 4.0 A and startup current is 4.0 A.) or with a 200 V
power supply, the :Avanxis IV consumes 0.4 kW at 2.0 A. (Rush current
is 2.0 A and startup current is 2.0 A.)
Note Rush current refers to the maximum current draw immediately
after the unit is turned ON.
Startup current refers to the maximum current draw
immediately after any of the :Avanxis IV functions begins
operating.

2.8 Power supply installation

■ AC power outlet and power cable

Fig. 2-2

The AC power outlet must be a three-hole socket with a properly

grounded earth terminal.
• Install the AC power outlet in an appropriate location referring to “2.2
Installation Space and Layout” in this chapter.
• The power cable is not included in the package.
Therefore, please locally acquire the completed power cable provided
with a connector compatible with the :Avanxis IV’s AC inlet as well as
a 3-pin plug compatible with the customer’s AC outlet. It is important
to note that the cable must be rated for at least 125 V at 6 A (for 100 V
AC regions) or 250 V at 6 A (for 200 V AC regions).

:Avanxis IV User's Guide

8 2 INSTALLATION

If you cannot find an applicable power cable, contact your local Agfa
service organization.

■ Grounding

WARNING
To prevent electrical shocks, have an authorized electrician
verify that the ground terminal on the AC power outlet is
grounded in accordance with all local laws and regulations.

■ Voltage fluctuations
The :Avanxis IV can run satisfactorily with line voltage fluctuations of up
to ±10% of the rated voltage. You should install a voltage stabilizer if
power at your facility is prone to fluctuations beyond this range. This
specification only refers to gradual voltage fluctuations, and does not
include voltage spikes and surges. For this reason, do not connect the
:Avanxis IV to the same circuit utilized by machinery subject to sudden
changes in operating loads. Wherever possible, the :Avanxis IV should
be connected to its own independent power circuit.

■ Voltage drops
Always use a properly rated power cable so that voltage drops do not
occur during startup or steady-state currents. To prevent possible
electrical damage to the :Avanxis IV, use appropriately rated fuses, circuit
breakers, and switches.
Make sure all components are selected and installed by an electrical
service company or a qualified electrician.

7. Image buffer
The :Avanxis IV is equipped with two internal image buffer so it can
execute exposure even when the data transmission speed from the host is
slower than the exposure speed. Image data is only exposed after it is
transmitted to the image buffer.

■ Exposure operation
The :Avanxis IV starts an exposure operation after all the data for one
image has been transmitted to one image buffer. Data for the next image
can be transmitted to the image buffer when the image capacity is smaller
than the free space in the image buffer.

■ When exposure is stopped or an error occurs

When an exposure operation is stopped or an error (other than an image
buffer error) occurs during an exposure operation, the image data is stored
as unexposed data. The image data can be re-exposed with the HDD-
OUT command after the error has been corrected.
(However, this image data cannot be re-exposed if you have turned OFF
the power supply once in the meantime.)

SET EXEC

This command is used to load the media. When this command is

executed, the media is positioned at the exposure position after cutting/
discharging the exposed area of the media. To stop the operation, press
the key before the cutter starts moving.
When the dedicated magazine is replaced, an exposed area is generated on
the media during error correction or the “Please set film” message is
displayed, execute the SET command.
This command works differently depending on the selected discharge
equipment as follows.

■ Standard specification
Media will be discharged to the film processor after its exposed area is
cut/discharged. This command will be cleared when the :Avanxis IV is
ready for exposure. However, it is impossible to execute this command
when the development cannot be performed because the film processor is
not ready or an error has occurred.
Executing the SET command discharges 200 mm of media to the film
processor.

:Avanxis IV User's Guide

■ When the collection box (available option) has been attached

After the media’s exposed area has been cut/discharged, the “Change Col.
Box” message will appear. Remove the collection box and the media
inside. This command will be cleared when the empty collection box is
re-mounted.
Executing the SET command discharges 500 mm of media to the
collection box.

Caution The collection box does not have the ability to detect the
presence of media. Do not mount the collection box with
media in it while the “Set Collect Box” message is
displayed. Otherwise, the next operation cannot be
performed correctly.

1.3 Media removal REMOVE

LOAD SET REMOVE>

REMOVE EXEC

This command is used to remove the media. Executing this command

rewinds the media to a position where the media can be removed
manually.
This command is effective only immediately after loading or cutting the
media. Once this command is activated, the operation cannot be stopped
even if the key is pressed.

1.4 Media cut and discharge CUT

<CUT CUT-COND FF

CUT EXEC

This command is used to cut/discharge the loaded media. The media

which is located at the exposure end position is automatically fed to the
cutter position and cut. Then, the cut media is discharged to the film
processor or the collection box.
To stop the operation, press the key before the cutter starts.
If you mistakenly open a door when the media has been loaded (the
LOADED lamp is lit), the media will be exposed. In this case, execute
the CUT command to cut/discharge the media and perform the next
exposure operation. When ID code label MF. 1, MF. 2 or MF. 3 is
attached to the dedicated magazine, the media will be exposed
approximately 1 m. In this case, execute the FF command to feed the
exposed area of the media and then execute the CUT command.

■ Standard specification
Media will be discharged to the film processor after its exposed area is
cut/discharged. This command will be cleared when the :Avanxis IV is
ready for exposure. However, it is impossible to execute this command
when development cannot be performed because the film processor is not
ready or an error has occurred.

■ When the collection box (available option) has been attached

After the media’s exposed area has been cut/discharged, the “Change Col.

media inside. This command will be cleared when the empty collection
box is re-mounted.

Caution The collection box does not have the ability to detect the

This command sets the position where the loaded media is cut/discharged.
If the parameter is set to “0” when the accumulated exposure length from
the previously performed LOAD, SET or CUT command is 310 mm or
more, the media will be cut after it is fed 117 mm from the position where
the trailing page margin ends. If you wish to feed more, set the parameter
to the desired length and the additional feed length will be set. The
additional feed length can be set from 0 to 500 mm in increments of 1 mm
from the operation panel. This setting is not effective for the standard
specification.

12. Exposure results

The :Avanxis IV has two exposure methods: remote exposure which
performs exposure using data provided from the host computer and local
exposure which is performed through the operation panel for the light
intensity controlled exposure, etc.
This section explains the exposure results when each exposure parameter
is set.

12.1 Primary scanning direction

The exposure position in the primary scanning direction can be
designated only from the host computer.

■ Exposure position designation

The exposure result in the primary scanning direction changes as shown
in Fig. 6-6 in accordance with the designation of the exposure position
from the host computer.

Caution The size of the media must be correctly set.

Setting the wrong media size changes the left and right
margins which will not be exposed. Note that the margin
may vary due to skewed media feed.

12.2 Secondary scanning direction

The exposure position in the secondary scanning direction can be
designated from both the host computer and the :Avanxis IV operation
panel. (The exposure position designated through the host computer has
priority over settings made on the :Avanxis IV panel when performing
remote exposure.) However, the designation must be performed from the
:Avanxis IV operation panel when the host computer RIP is unable to
designate the exposure position in the secondary scanning direction. The
exposure results are as described below.

■ Exposure start position immediately after media loading,

transferring or cutting
There is approximately 73 mm of extra margin generated between the
leading edge of the media and the start position of the leading page
margin, which has been set by executing the SPC command, immediately
after the LOAD, SET, or REMOVE command is executed.

■ Exposure end position of the discharged media

• Standard specification
When the accumulated exposure length from the previously performed
LOAD, SET or REMOVE command has been executed is 117 mm or
longer, approximately 10 mm of extra margin will be generated between
the trailing edge of the media and the trailing page margin after the CUT
command is executed and the media is cut. While, when the accumulated
exposure length is less than 117 mm, the length of the media to be
discharged will be adjusted to 200 mm. Thus, the extra margin between
the trailing edge of the media and the trailing page margin will be more
than 10 mm.
