Prolamsa was founded in 1954 and began producing
steel tubular shapes in 1961. Today, we make a wide
range of structural and mechanical steel tubing. Our
structural steel tubing, also called hollow structural
sections (HSS), is produced in our 1.2 million square-
foot plant, a state-of-the-art facility opened in 2001.
We produce HSS in square shapes from 2" to 5 "; in
rectangles from 3" x 2" up to 6" x 4"; and in rounds
from 2 7/8" to 6 5/8" in diameter … in lengths up to
42’. These products are available bare, galvanized
or red primered. There are a variety of other colors
available. We also maintain inline cut-to-length
capabilities. All of our steel tubing is produced to
ASTM A500 specifications. We are ISO 9001:2000
certified
Prolamsa: High-Quality
Structural Steel Tubing (HSS)
Steel Hollow Structural Sections (HSS) are cold-
formed, welded steel tubes, designed for buildings,
bridges and a variety of structural applications and
manufactured products. Because its strength-to-weight
ratio is so great, HSS’s use has grown dramatically in
the past decade as more designers and engineers
become aware of its capabilities.
To produce HSS, we begin with the highest-quality flat
steel strip and form it into a tube by passing it through a
set of rollers; then its edges are heat-treated and joined
by the Electric Resistance Welding (ERW) process.
Once it’s formed, the tube is passed through
sizing/shaping rolls and cold-formed into exact round,
square or rectangular sizes. Sections of HSS can be
either welded or bolted to one another.

HSS: High-Strength, Light
Weight, Easy to Fabricate
Because Prolamsa’s HSS is made to tight tolerances,
it’s an attractive alternative for steel structurals,
concrete and wood. Specifically, HSS offers
designers, fabricators, engineers and contractors
these advanatages:

support and exceptional torsional resistance.
• An attractive appearance.
• Uniform size, shape, strength and tolerances.
• Ease of fabrication, since HSS is easy to bend, form,
punch or drill.

• Easy joining by welding or bolting.
• Easier to paint and clean because there are no flange
areas or sharp edges.
• Tough, long-lasting, because HSS is fire resistant,
resistant to dry rot, mildew, termites and carpenter
ants.
• Recyclable … steel is the world’s most recycled
material.
• Hollow centers enable HSS to be filled with concrete
to increase its strength, or to save space and provide
added protection for wiring, pipes and conduit which
can be run through its hollow center.
