Timing belt: removal/installation

Unless otherwise advised by the manufacturer, the following procedures are recommended:

audio system security code

Timing belt: removal/installation


Disconnect the battery earth cable
Disconnect the positive battery cable
Remove the right front wheel
Remove the right front splash guard
Remove the engine lower cover
Remove the ancillary drive belt tensioner pulley
Remove the ancillary drive belts
Lock the flywheel
Insert a screwdriver

Remove the crankshaft pulley


Refit the crankshaft pulley bolt
Remove the screwdriver
Fit the special tool to support the engine
The engine must be secured to ensure drive train alignment
Mark the engine/gearbox supports
Remove the right-hand engine support

Remove the timing belt upper cover

Remove the middle timing cover


Remove the timing belt lower cover

Turn the crankshaft to TDC for cylinder 1


Note: Do not turn the engine anti-clockwise

Align the crankshaft timing marks

Lock the crankshaft by fitting a locking pin into


the flywheel Mot 1054

Check the camshaft timing marks

Renew the tensioner

Fit the tensioner pulley

Position the tensioner pulley as shown


Do not remove the tensioner locking pin before the timing belt is put into position

Align the timing marks on the timing belt with
the marks on the camshaft and crankshaft
gearwheels

Check that the crankshaft is still locked at the flywheel Mot 1054
Fit the timing belt

Timing belt: removal/installation


Remove the crankshaft TDC positioning tool Mot 1054
Unlock the tensioner
Pre-tension the timing belt
Turn the tensioner anti-clockwise until the pointer is positioned as shown
Use an Allen key 6 mm

Tighten the tensioner pulley 24 Nm


Turn the crankshaft clockwise, 6 rotations
Check that the locking pin can be inserted and removed Mot 1054
Note: Repeat the procedure if the special tool does not fit
Loosen the tensioner pulley, keeping it steady with an Allen key 6 mm
Align the marks on the tensioner

Tighten the tensioner pulley 24 Nm

Timing belt: removal/installation


Note: Restart the fitting procedure if the
tensioner is in contact with the cylinder head

Lock the flywheel


Use a screwdriver

Fit the timing belt lower cover


Fit the crankshaft pulley
Remove the screwdriver
Refit the middle timing cover

Timing belt: removal/installation


Refit the timing belt upper cover 33 Nm

Refit the engine support


Fit the ancillary drive belt
Fit the ancillary drive belt tensioner
Refit the engine covers
Refit the front right splash guard
Refit the front right wheel
Reconnect the battery

Torque settings
Crankshaft pulley:
use new bolt(s) 40 Nm + 70° ± 6°
Tensioner pulley nut: 24 Nm
Upper timing covers: 33 Nm
Tensioner pulley: 24 Nm
Ancillary drive belt tensioner: 37 Nm

Special tools
Flywheel locking pin: Mot. 582-01
TDC locking pin Mot. 1054
