November 2019

END OF YEAR OBOE CONCERT FOR MY STUDENTS

When: 7pm Wednesday 4 December
Venue: Choir Room, Music department, Diocesan School, Epsom
Cost: $10 per oboist to be paid before or on the day.

Our final oboe concert of the year is a celebration of a wonderful year of music making with
everyone playing duets and trios with fellow oboists, friends or family members. All performers
should be there by 6.30pm at the latest for a final run through with their fellow performers. Please
bring a small plate of food/drink for a shared supper at the end.

Because everyone is in pairs or trios, late notice means a lot of extra work for me. Please let me know
asap if you are not able to attend. There will be a charge of $10 for cancellations made after 22
November!

Congratulations to the following students who were placed in the IRMT Woodwind Scholarship

LES MISERABLES
I am playing in this musical at the Civic Theatre throughout November (7 shows per week!). I know
some of you have already booked seats. Do let me know if you are coming along.

I have a small number of A reserve tickets available for the TUES, WED and THURS shows for the
special price of $50.00 (+ booking fees). Student tickets are available online for $37.50. If anyone
would like one of these tickets, email me and I will send you the code. Please note: check online first
for availability as tickets are going fast. It’s also a long show – around 3 hours
NEXT YEAR: EXAM EXPECTATIONS
Next year I will be expecting all students who have their lessons during school time (and private
students too), to take an external exam. The exam periods are May/June, August/September and
October/ November. If you want to avoid the busy school exam period at the end of the year OR if
you want to do two grades in a year (which a number of you are doing), use the summer holidays to
start learning some of the new pieces and scales!

These are my grade expectations:

Starting oboe at Year 5 – 7
After two years: Grade 2/3
After three years Grade 4/5
Starting oboe at Year 9
After two years: Grade 3
After three years Grade 5

ANIME: LIZ AND THE BLUE BIRD

Thanks to Cody for finding this beautiful anime showing the oboe. Do watch it when you have a
moment. It is stunning!

The IRMT conference is being held at Kings College. There is a woodwind master class on Saturday
morning, 18 January, taken by bassoonist, Ben Hoadley. Let me know if you would like to be
considered to play. It is a great opportunity to get feedback on your playing.

That’s all for now!
