Common Admission Test (CAT) 2019 Visit on Shiksha

Summary
CAT 2019 registration process began on August 7 on the official website of the national-level entrance exam.
Interested candidates can register for the exam till September 18, 2019.

What is CAT Exam?


Common Admission T est or CAT is a management aptitude test conducted by the IIMCAT for admission to the Indian
Institutes of Management (IIMs) and over 1000 other B-schools across India. T he CAT exam is conducted by one of the
IIMs on behalf of IIMCAT , in online mode at various test centres in over 156 cities. In 2018, about 2.41 lakh candidates
applied for the CAT exam. T he number of applications received was the highest since 2010. CAT 2019 will be conducted
by IIM Kozhikode.

T he candidate must possess a bachelor's degree with at least 50 per cent marks or equivalent CGPA (4 5 per cent f or SC,
ST and PWD/DA category) from a recognised board or university

Candidates appearing for the final year of bachelor's degree/equivalent qualification or awaiting result are also eligible

What's New in CAT 2019 Exam?


No changes have been made in CAT exam pattern or syllabus for 2019. T he question paper will have 3 sections with a total
of 100 questions from Quantitative Ability (QA), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) and Verbal Ability & Reading
Comprehension (VARC).
Last year, IIMCAT had made a few changes in the exam pattern of CAT . In CAT 2018, there were more T IT A-type questions
as compared to MCQs.

IIM Admission Process
CAT selection procedure for all the IIMs includes the following:
1. Screening of candidates on the basis of their CAT 2019 score

Q: For how many times is CAT exam held in a year?
A: CAT exam is conducted online once every year. T he exam is held in two sessions - forenoon and afternoon. T he forenoon
session is held from 9 am to 12 pm and the afternoon session is held between 2 pm and 5 pm.

Process
CAT exam process includes completion of registration, allotment of admit card, appearing for the CAT exam followed by
result.
S T EP 1 : CA T 2 0 1 9 Re g is t r a t io n & A ppl ica t io n P r o ce s s
CAT 2019 registration is done online on the official website of IIMCAT . It includes registering on the official CAT website as
new user, filling the online application form and paying the fee. CAT 2019 application form is to be filled and submitted online.
T he application fee is Rs 1,900 for students belonging to the General category and Rs 950 for students belonging to the
Reserved category.
S T EP 2 : CA T 2 0 1 9 A dmit Ca r ds
T he CAT 2019 admit card will available for download on the official website from Octobr 23 to November 24, 2019. CAT
aspirants must download their admit cards from the official website as it is a mandatory document to be presented in the
exam hall.
STEP 3: CAT 2019 Exam
T he CAT exam will be held online in two shifts on November 24, 2019. T he question paper will contain 100 MCQs from VARC,
DILR and QA. Candidates will be required to complete the test in three hours.
S T EP 4 : CA T 2 0 1 9 Re s ul t s
T he CAT 2019 result will be declared int the second week of January, 2020 (tentatively on January 6, 2020). Candidates who
appear for the exam can check their scores and download their scorecards from the official website. T he results will also be
notified through SMS on the phone number registered with IIMCAT . Based on CAT 2019 scores the candidates will be invited
by the IIMs for GD/PI rounds.

Exam Centers
CAT 2019 exam centres will be allotted to candidates on the basis of test cities selected in the application form. CAT 2019
will be conducted at over 4000 exam centres in 156 cities across India. T he aspirants will be given the option to choose up top
four cities according to their preference for allottment of CAT exam centre.

Selecting CAT 2019 Test Cities: Key Points


T he CAT application form has a field in which the aspirants are supposed to fill their choice of preferred cities for exam centre
allotment.
T he candidates can select up to four cities from the list of 147.
Selection must be done in order of preference starting from first.
T est city is allotted based on availability.
If the first preferred city is not available, the second preference will be allotted to the candidate.

Application Form
CAT 2019 reg istration process began on August 7, 2019. Any candidate who wishes to appear in the exam can apply by
completing the CAT registration process and filling the CAT 2019 application form along with payment of requisite fees
online. Last date to apply f or CAT 2019 is September 18, 2019 (till 5:00 pm). CAT exam is scheduled to be held on
November 24, 2019 in two sessions.
Eligibility criteria for CAT 2019 exam is Graduation with 50% marks in aggregate (45% for SC/ST /PwD candidates). Final year
Graduation students are also eligible to apply.

How to Register for CAT 2019
CAT registration is a three-step process, which includes online registration, filling up the CAT application form and payment
of fees. Check below, the step-by-step process of CAT registration 2019.
S t e p 1 : CA T 2 0 1 9 Re g is t r a t io n
T o apply for CAT 2019, the candidates will have to register on the official website (IIMCAT ). T o register, follow the steps
given below:
Open the official CAT 2019 website in a new window
Click on CAT 2019 reg istration
Enter name, date of birth, email ID, phone number and nationality
Click to Generate OT P
On successful registration, an OT P will be sent to your mobile number
Verify your registration by entering the OT P in the given field

Once your CAT registration is verified, you will receive a user ID and password on email ID and registered mobile number. Use
the CAT 2019 user ID and password to access the application form. Fill the CAT application form very carefully and accurately
because once submitted the forms cannot be edited.

T he CAT application/reg istration f orm 2019 is divided into six sections:
1. Personal Details: In this section, you have to enter details like Name, Date of Birth, Father’s Name, Category, Gender,
Nationality, Communication address, Email ID, Phone Number etc.
2. Academics: In this section, you have to enter Class X and XII exam scores, Bachelor’s degree details and marksheet and
details of any other professional courses (if any)
3. Work Experience: If you have relevant work-experience, fill details like name of the company, duration, etc. in this section.
4. Prog rammes: In this section, you have to select IIM campuses of your choice and the programmes you wish to opt for.
5. T est City: In this section, select your preferred test cities. You can select up to four cities in order of preference from 1 to 4.
6. Payment: In this section, you have to pay the application fee. You can pay the CAT application fee through Credit/Debit card,
Paytm or PayU.

T he third and last step in CAT registration is payment of application fee. After furnishing details in the first five sections, click
on 'save and continue' to proceed to fee payment window. CAT application fee can be paid online through internet banking or
credit/debit card.

T o fill the CAT application form 2019 without any error, you must keep the following documents by your side:

Documents to Upload Along With CAT 2019 Application Form

Upload the scanned image of your passport size photo with


white background. T he photo should not be older than 6
Scanned Passport Size Photog raph months. T he photo should be within the dimensions of
30mm X 45mm and in .jpg or .jpeg format. T he photo
should not be less than 150 px/inch in resolution.

Scan and upload your signature within the dimensions of


Scanned Sig nature 80mm X 35mm. T he signature should be clear and on white
background.

If you belong to NC-OBC, SC or ST category, you will have
to download the caste certificate from the CAT Website,
NC-OBC/SC/ST Certif icate
enter the required information, self-attest it and upload its
scanned copy as a PDF document.

If you belong to PwD category, you are required to


download the PwD certificate from the CAT website, fill it,

Selection of CAT 2019 Test Cities


At the time of filling the CAT 2019 application f orm, you can select the test city of preference by selecting up to four
options from the given list of 156 cities. However, allotment of the test city will be first-come-first-served basis. In case, you
do not get the first preferred city, the second one will be allotted.

CAT Registration 2019: Things to Keep in Mind


T he preferred web browsers to fill CAT 2019 application form are Internet Explorer (version 11 and above), Mozilla Firefox
(version 50 to 61) and Google Chrome (version 50 to 69).
At the time of CAT registration, mention your personal and fully functional mobile phone number and email ID.
Do not fill the CAT application form on a smart phone. Use a laptop or a desktop for filling the application form.
Enter valid information in the CAT application form. In case any information is found to be incorrect, the candidate’s
admission may be cancelled.
Mention your choice of IIM campuses on the application form wisely. You will be called for interview (if shortlisted) On the
basis of selection in this form.
Cross check all the information filled in the CAT application form thoroughly before hitting submit/save key. Once submitted,
the form cannot be edited. You will have to create a new login ID and fill the form and pay the fee again.
Make sure the fee payment transaction is successful. If the transaction remains incomplete, your CAT application form will
not be accepted.
Save a copy of fee acknowledgement slip and a copy of duly filled application form for future reference.
Also, preserve the CAT registration confirmation mail. It is advisable to take printout of the confirmation mail.

CAT Reg istration 2019: Instructions for Reserved Categ ory Students
Candidates who wish to apply under Reserved Category, must follow the instructions mentioned specifically for such
candidates.

for Backward Classes (NCBC) website.
Submission of Resaved category form is mandatory. Download the EWS, NC-OBC, SC/ST Certificates from the CAT website,
enter the information, self-attest, scan as PDF document and upload them on the CAT website.
If you are applying under Person with Disability (PwD) category. Download the Person with Disability (PwD) Certificate from
the CAT website, enter the required information and self-attest, and scan as PDF document to upload the certificates on the
CAT website.
Do not forget to select details under PwD Category - Wheelchair Support and Scribe Requirement, in the CAT application
form.
If you will be using a Scribe to write the exam for you, fill the Scribe Affidavit form available on the CAT website and arrange a
scribe yourself.

CAT Application Form Correction


T he exam authority may offer a chance to candidates to make corrections in their CAT 2019 application form only once. Few
weeks after the conclusion of CAT application process, the CAT application form correction window is likely be opened for
candidates to edit certain information like, percentage of marks scored, work experience, and programmes selected and
upload a new photo. T he CAT application form correction window will be opened for a short period of time only.

FAQs Related to CAT Registration 2019


Q: I am in the f inal year of my Bachelor's deg ree. Am I elig ible to take the CAT exam?
A: Yes, you are eligible to appear for the exam, provided you have scored above 50% marks (or equivalent) in aggregate in
your first two years of the degree programme. In case you belong to SC, ST and PwD/DA categories, the minimum marks
obtained by you should be 45%.
Q: Can I f ill the CAT application f orm of f line?
A: No. T he CAT application form can only be filled online.
Q: Can I edit my CAT application f orm af ter submission?
A: Once the CAT application form is submitted, candidates are not allowed to make changes in certain fields like name, date
of birth, academic details, email id, mobile number etc. However, one can edit certain field once the form correction window

Q: How can I recover my CAT log in password?
A: In case you forget your CAT login password, click on the tab indicating – forget password and follow the instruction. A link
to reset your password will be sent to your email ID. Click on the link and change the password.

Each of the three sections - QA, DILR and VARC - contains various important topics the students need to study and prepare

Number of questions asked range from 7-11.
Sectional weightage of this section is 7-11 per cent.
T he type of questions are all non-MCQs, which means the candidates have to type in the answer (T IT A).
T here is no negative marking in VA since the questions are non-MCQ type.
T ypes of questions range from para-jumbles, out of context sentence in a para, error correction in a para, vocabulary usage
and sentence completion to analogies and critical reasoning.
Reading Comprehension (RC): Key Points
Number of questions asked range from 24-28.
Sectional weightage of this section is 24-28 per cent
T he type of questions are all MCQs, hence there is negative marking of -1
CAT has a mix of RC passages, on an average 4-3 long passages and 2-3 short passages.
According to the trend of the last three years, long passages are of 900 word and short passages are of 600 words.
T opics of these RCs range from science, history, politics, environment, society to literature, mythology and abstract topics.

Important points about the CAT exam pattern are as follows:

CAT 2019 - Overall and Sectional Time Limit


CAT exam has sectional time limit, which means the candidates will not be allowed to choose any section to start with or
switch from one section to another. T hey will have to follow the CAT 2019 question paper chronologically, from section 1-3.
T he chronology of the sections will be:
Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension,
Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
Quantitative Aptitude.
Aspirants must remember that they will have to complete each section within one hour and the moment one hour is
complete, the screen will automatically move to the next section. No changes or corrections will be allowed at a later stage.

It is important to know the CAT marking scheme before attempting the exam so that you can select which questions to
answer and which ones to skip.

CAT 2019 reg istration dates: CAT registrations for 2019 exam will take place online on the official website of CAT 2019.

will take place in the first week of October.

Admit Card
CAT admit card 2019 will be issued to the candidates on October 23, 2019. T hey can download their respective admit cards
from IIMCAT website by using their CAT login ID from 5:00 pm onwards. CAT 2019 admit card will be available for download
till November 24, 2019. T he aspirants must download their admit cards before exam as hard copy of the same will not be
issued.
CAT admit card is a mandatory document to be carried to the exam centre. Any candidates found not carrying their admit
card will not be allowed to take the CAT exam.

As soon as you download your CAT admit card, check the all the information mentioned on it. T he below listed information

How is CAT Percentile Calculated?


Calculation of CAT percentile includes f our steps:
1. CAT marking scheme: In CAT , 3 marks are awarded for each correct answer and one mark is deducted for each incorrect
answer. No marks is deducted for wrong answers in non-MCQ type questions.

2. Each candidate is first scored section-wise and then the overall score is arrived at by totaling the section-wise scores.
3. T hereafter, these section-wise and overall scores (raw scores) are normalized to arrive at scaled CAT score.
4. In the fourth step, the normalized scores are converted into percentiles which is reported on the CAT score card.

What after CAT 2019 Result?


Following the declaration of CAT 2019 result, the IIMs begin their admission process. Given below are the three stages of IIM
admission process:
1. Screening of candidates on the basis of CAT score and academic history
2. WAT /GD-PI round
3. Final selection of the candidates
Once the CAT result is declared, candidates are shortlisted for the interview round on the basis of CAT cut-of f percentiles
fixed by each institute. T his round consists of Written Ability T est (WAT ) or Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI).
Final selection of the candidates is done on the basis of the CAT score, academic history and performance in WAT /PI.

Q: Will I receive my CAT result via SMS?
A: CAT result notification will be sent to each CAT 2019 candidate through SMS on their registered mobile phone number; but
the SMS will not reveal the CAT scores.
Q: I do not have any work experience. Will my CAT result g et af f ected by this?
A: Not having a work experience will not affect your CAT result. It may, however, have an impact on the final selection to IIMs
as students having work experience get extra points during shortlisting of candidates.
Q: What is the validity of CAT score? I appeared in CAT exam f or two consecutive years. Can I use the hig hest
score of the two f or admission?
A: No you cannot do so as the CAT score is valid only for one year. T he score of 2019 exam will be applicable for 2020
academic year only.
Q: I appeared in CAT when I was in the f inal year of Graduation. In my f inal semester, I g ot a backlog . Will my CAT
score still be valid?
A: Your CAT score will be valid but you may not be able to get admission in any B-School, unless you clear the backlog.

T he 20 IIMs and other top B-schools in India fix their own CAT cut off percentile for selection of candidates for admission.
T he CAT cut off 2019 will be declared after the result announcement (second week of January 2020). T he qualifying CAT cut
offs will be released by all the 20 IIMs before hand. IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta and IIM Lucknow have
already announced qualifying CAT 2019 cut offs for admission to their PGP batch of 2020.
IIM Calcutta and IIM Bangalore have fixed 85 percentile (General category) as qualifying CAT cut off while IIM Lucknow has
fixed 90 percentile (General category) as qualifying CAT cut off for the upcoming academic year. T he lowest qualifying cut off
is of IIM Ahmedabad at 80 percentile.

What After CAT 2019 Cut Offs? Selection Criteria & Admission Process
Once the CAT 2019 result is announced, depending upon your CAT percentile score, you will be eligible for admission. T he IIM
selection process includes screening of candidates on the basis of CAT score, WAT /GD-PI round and final selection. Most of
the IIMs conduct WAT /GD-PI round in the months of February and March, while offer of admission letters are issued to
successful candidates in the months of April and May.
On invitation f or WAT /GD-PI round, the candidate must present the f ollowing documents:
Original and self-attested photocopies of marksheets of class X, class XII and Graduation
Original and self-attested photocopies of caste/class and/or disability certificate in case of SC, ST , NC-OBC and PwD
candidates
Candidates appearing for the final bachelor's degree exam or equivalent must present an original certificate from the
Principal/Registrar/Director of the university/Institution certifying that the candidate has obtained 50% marks or equivalent
(45% in case of the candidates belonging to SC, ST , and PwD category) based on latest available grades/marks.
T he IIMs’ final offer of admission is based on the composite score of a candidate which takes into account the factors
mentioned below:

1. CAT score: Sectional and overall percentile scored in CAT exam
2. WAT /GD-PI score: Points scored in the WAT /GD-PI round
3. Class 10 score: Percentage scored in Class 10 or equivalent
4. Class 12 score: Percentage scored in Class 12 or equivalent
5. Graduation score: Aggregate of three-year Bachelor's programme or equivalent
6. Gender diversity: 0-5 extra points are given to female/transgender candidates
7. Academic diversity: 0-5 extra points are given to candidates belonging to academic background other than Engineering

Q: What is CAT cut of f ?
A: T he CAT cut off refers to the minimum percentile required to score by a candidate in order to get shortlisted for further
selection process for admission to IIMs.
Q: Does only one institute release the CAT cut of f ?
A: No, every institute releases its own CAT cut off. T hese cut-offs are released category-wise and candidates who meet
these cut-offs are called for the selection process.
Q: When will CAT 2019 cut of f s be released?
A: CAT 2019 cut offs will be released by the IIMs soon after the CAT result announcement. T he CAT 2019 result is expected
to be announced in the first week January, 2020. T he cut offs will be released on the respective websites of the B-Schools.
Q: Will I g et admission to the IIM/other institutes if I meet the CAT cut-of f ?
A: No, only meeting the cut off does not guarantee admission to a B-School. T he candidate needs to clear the WAT /GD-PI
rounds too, in order to secure admission in a B-School.

CAT Answer key: Raising Objection


T he IIMCAT introduced the provision to raise objection to official answer key in CAT 2018. Under this, the test takers can
raise objection to the official answer of any question asked in the CAT exam, if they are convinced it is wrong. If the objection
is found to be genuine, the official answer is revised. T o raise objection, the candidates are required to fill an online form
available on the official website for a limited period of time.

How to Submit CAT Answer Objections


In case a candidate wishes to raise an objection to CAT 2019 answer key, s/he can do so by filling the CAT answer key
objection form. T he candidates can fill the objection form by using their CAT login ID and password. T he window to file
objection to CAT answer key 2019 will be open for only two days. T he objection can be filed with payment of Rs 1000 as
f ees, online. Following are the steps to fill the objection form:

selection process.
Admission process through CAT score into IIMs and other management institutes begin after CAT result is declared. T he
admission process of all 20 IIMs lasts for 3-4 months, and it concludes by the end of April. Classes commence from June-July.
Admission procedure of non-IIMs also get over around the same time.

Selection Procedure of IIMs Through CAT


IIM admission is based on three parameters including, CAT score, WAT /GD-PI, academic record. T he IIM admission
procedure includes three stages:
First phase: Shortlisting of candidates
Second phase: WAT -PI round
T hird phase: Final selection

Fir s t pha s e :
Each test takers is shortlisted on the basis of his/her CAT score viz-a-viz CAT cut-offs fixed by each IIM individually for that
year. Minimum cut-offs of the IIMs generally over 90 percentile for General candidates (much lower for reserved category
candidates), which means, those who will score above 90 percentile in CAT 2018 will be eligible for the interview round. But
whether they are invited for the interview, depends on the actual CAT score and past academic record. On the other hand,

In this phase, IIMs conduct WAT /GD-PI. T his stage is the decider for the selection panel finalise the candidate on the basis of
their performance in WAT /GD-PI.

Written Ability Test (WAT)


Written Ability T est or WAT is an essay writing test in which candidates are given topic to write upon in 15-30 minutes. T he
topics of WAT may vary from recent events to philosophy. T he purpose of WAT is to check the candidate’s clarity of ideas
and understanding of his/her surroundings.

Group Discussion (GD)


In Group Discussion, candidates are divided into groups of 8-10. T hey are given a topic and the floor is thrown open for each
candidate to put forward their views. T hrough this exercise, the moderator assesses each candidate’s communication skills
and ability to convince other.

Personal Interview (PI)


T he Personal Interview round is the most crucial round of IIMs admission. It carries about 30-40% weight in selection
process. In PI, the candidates face a panel of 2-4 interviewers who assess them on their confidence, communication skills,
managerial skills and leadership qualities, etc. T he secret of succeeding in this round is staying calm and being honest with
your answers.

Q: What is WAT /PI?
A: Written Ability T est or WAT is a 30-minute essay writing test on topics taken from fields like socio-political, economic and
business affairs, sports, etc. PI refers to Personal Interview held on the same day as WAT .
Q. How will I know if I have made it to WAT -PI round of any IIM?
A: After the declaration of CAT 2019 result, IIMs will contact you through email inviting you for WAT -PI participation. In many
IIMs, you will be required to check your name in the shortlist on their official website. Refer to the official websites for the
exact process.
Q: How will I g et to know about my selection f or admission into IIM?
A: Candidates selected by any IIM for admission are informed through email which also contains the 'acceptance of offer'
