Dec 11 HTA Winter
One day when I was 9, I went out to surf and was the only one out. I had a kinda good
Showcase
wave and did a good layback snap. Right away, a guy sitting on the beach grabbed his
board and paddled out. It was Andy. We traded waves for awhile, but it
really wasn't good.
After awhile he said, "Are you having a Jan 2-7 Face-2-Face with
hard time out here?" I HTA teachers and
said, "yes, I am!" Learning Coaches
He said "Oh good, that makes me feel
better, because I'm having a really hard
time out here." Jan 11- Hawaii State

Learning Coach Corner

During the holiday season, stress levels can increase. Add in getting your
progress/grades up and it will seem like life went from crazy to insane! Taking a
break is OK! In fact, sometimes the break is what you need to get back on track.
Learning Coach Tips:
Grades K-8 – When planning for the week of Thanksgiving, see if two lessons can
be combined. This is particularly possible in subjects like spelling/vocabulary,
literature and history. This will give you a feeling of getting more done in a
shorter time frame and allow for a well- deserved Thanksgiving break!
High School – Try reading ahead. Remember that just because the quiz, test, or
assignments are not open, it does not mean your student can’t read ahead. This
could help them progress efficiently through the lesson when
assignments/quiz/test are opened by the teacher. This is also a great way to
improve content retention.

Hi Students and Parents:

Many of our students will be taking the Hawaii State Assessment over the next few weeks;
therefore, I thought I would focus on Test Taking Strategies. We all have encountered test anxiety
on some level. Some of us may be afraid of failure; some may be afraid because we didnʼt
prepare, and others may be afraid of disappointing parents, teachers, and ourselves. Having
some level of anxiety is normal because we want to succeed or we may desire to be the best. We
can perform at a higher level with some simple precautions we can take before the test and during
the test. These tips are from http://www.slideshare.net/susy_gwen/test-taking-strategies-
presentation-911268 and if you would like more in-depth information, you can click on the link.

 Always go to bed on time. Sounds simple. However, if you donʼt have a good nightʼs rest, you
may feel irritable and you may lack focus before a big test.
 Talk to your parents or a friend about any concerns you may have. Discussions can alleviate
some of the pressure and anxiety you may be feeling.
 Eat a good breakfast. You donʼt want to be thinking about food and have a an empty stomach
while taking a test.
 With multiple choice tests, make sure to read all the answer choices before marking anything
and if you do not understand directions, ask for help.
 Donʼt spend too much time on one question. Do your best and move on.
 Answer the easiest questions first and then go back to the ones youʼve skipped.
 Do not change your answers unless you are very uncertain of your first choice. You should
stick with your instincts. REMEMBER: YOUR FIRST GUESS IS USUALLY RIGHT.
 Use the process of elimination. Eliminate answers you know are incorrect. If you can eliminate
two wrong answers, your chance of choosing the right answer is greater.
 Skip, Return, Check: If you finish early, check to make sure you have answered all questions.
 Find key words or phrases in the question that will help you choose the correct answer.
 Make sure you understand what the question is asking and respond accordingly.
 If you have a passage to read, make sure you read the questions FIRST. Therefore, you will
know what your are looking for as you go and this will make the test go faster.
 For math problems on scratch paper, double check to make sure you have copied the problem
correctly from the test booklet.
 Also, make sure you line up place values correctly(ones, tens, hundredths, thousandths) or
they will be incorrect.
 If your answers donʼt match any of the choices, reread, recopy, and try solving it again.
 If any time remains, spend it on questions, you now nothing about. REMEMBER: YOUR
FIRST GUESS IS USUALLY RIGHT.
 Donʼt spend too much time rewriting or obsessing about neatness.
 Remember, itʼs okay not to know everything.
