ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

This project was supported by our INTRODUCTION TO INNOVATIVE

PROJECTS teacher, Professor Ravi Shanker Babu. We thank our sir for his help
and guidance throughout the project. His knowledge provided great insight and
expertise that greatly assisted the research and his guidelines minimized our
mistakes exponentially.
We would like to thank the VIT University Management, and our Dean for giving
us an opportunity to carry out our studies in this prestigious university.
AIM
“Young talent in vain is a greater loss than losing a war”
We plan to ask youngsters in and around VIT about their current employment
status. The aid provided by the government to increase the employment
opportunities. Observe the work environment and the salary structure, if it is
sufficient for their livelihood. The hopes that people have with future employment
opportunities to get a better lifestyle. How is their educational qualification
affecting their employment status

INTRODUCTION
Sir William Beveridge says about unemployment “Jobs, rather than men, should
wait.” Lord Keynes diagnosed unemployment in advanced economies to be the
result of a deficiency of effective demand. Unemployment means a person willing
to work but unable to find a qualified job.

Our country is facing many problems but one of the serious problems is of
unemployment. Many graduates, doctors, engineers, scientist are unemployed or
working underemployed. Due to unemployment we are wasting our country’s
human resource. If the problem of unemployment is solved, it will help in the
development of the country. With population of over 1.20 billion in our country, the
unemployment rate is increasing day by day. The problem of unemployment is
rising but still many industries are facing the problem of skilled candidate for their
company.
CURRENT SITUATION OF YOUTH
UNEMPLOYMENT
Almost 28 million youngsters, between 19-29 years of age, are unemployed in
India.
If we include people with salary less then 6000 per month then the number rises
to 48 million.
65% of the population in India is less than 35 years of age, hence the figures are
increasing rapidly.
In a developing country like India, unemployment among youth can cause a
major setback to its development rate.

REASONS FOR YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT

Illiteracy- Majority of our country’s youth have a very minimal academic
qualification or even no basic education. Over 25% of our youth is illiterate.
Over-population: The most important factor is the alarming growth of
population. The population of our country has exceeded 1.2 billion. We see that the
population is growing fast but there is no expansion of corresponding avenues of
employment.
Lack of job opportunities among various industries which do not provide any
openings of employment whatsoever.
Poverty struck family cannot afford basic education for their children which
often leads to unemployment
Less Government Schemes: Government welfare schemes gives less benefit or
very less benefit to the youth.
Lack of Technical Qualification: They do not possess such technical
qualifications as would enable them to take to some technical lines. The society is
thus confronted with the problem of finding openings for the educated young
people.
Corruption: In government sector and in some private sector people get the job
by giving bribe. Even though the candidate is not that qualified but if he gives the
bribe he gets the job. So, the qualified candidate remains unemployed.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN INDIA BY AGE

GROUP

UNDERSTANDING THE SITUATION

While meeting various people around our campus, we interrogated and asked their
views about the reasons and the problems they are facing in employment or getting
a job. Two of such interactions are described below-

1. We came to meet Md Imran. He works as an

accountant in one the messes in men’s hostel. His
income is around 8000 and sends 50% of his
income to his home in UP. While talking to him
about youth unemployment he stated the reason
for it such as, poor family background, lack of
opportunities in his state and illiteracy as the
main reasons for it. And also said 70-80 % of his
friends and family members of his age are either unemployed or do daily labour
jobs to fill their stomach.

2. Neeraja is one of the millions of young

Indians who make up a population bulge
that experts say will see India hit 1.6
billion people in less than 20 years.
Neeraja grew up in the poverty-ridden
western state of Tamil Nadu (Dharmapuri).
Neeraja works as a laborer in VIT, sending
part of her meager earnings back to her
parents, itinerant farm workers. Like
countless others she moved to another
place in search of employment. In
Dharmapuri, there was no hope of getting a job. It was a choice of migrating or
starving. It wasn't a choice, really," she said. Her income is 5000/-. Neeraja is
trained as a Textile Weaver, but couldn't find a job. He tried to find a job in an
industry, but failed. Neeraja is clear that she wants to cast off her humble lower
middle class roots and pursue her upwardly mobile dreams.

CONDITION AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL

Unemployment in India is projected to witness marginal increase between 2017
and 2018, signalling stagnation in job creation in the country, according to a UN
labour report.
Unemployment Rate in India increased to 3.52 percent in 2017 from 3.51
percent in 2016. Unemployment Rate in India averaged 4.05 percent from 1983
until 2017, reaching an all time high of 8.30 percent in 1983 and a record low of
3.41 percent in 2014.
Job creation in India is not expected to pick up pace in 2017 and 2018 as
unemployment rises slightly, representing a near stagnation in percentage terms.
"Manufacturing growth has underpinned India's recent economic performance,
which may help buffer demand for the region's commodity exporters,"

SOLUTIONS FOR YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT

To solve the problem a change of outlook is also needed. However, there is a need
for harmonious development of economic opportunities.
Practical Education System: Hence our education system should be more
practical. Vocational education can offer greater employment opportunities to our
youths. A system of education should be evolved where students are given technical
training so that will eventually help them in securing suitable jobs in appropriate
lines of occupations.
Revival of small and cottage industries: By reviving cottage and small-scale
industries we can also solve the problem of rural unemployment. The existing
cottage industries are to be revitalized and along with them new industries on
cottage basis should be started. Cottage industries can serve not only as whole time
occupations to many but also as subsidiary means of livelihood to thousands.
Economic opportunities in agriculture: The scope for employment of the
educated young men in in the field of agricultural is often forgotten. The
introduction of better farming methods, cultivation of new crops, running of poultry
farms, gardening, etc, are possible lines of work which young men with technical
training and initiative may take up with profit.
Control Population Explosion: However, all these will be of no avail unless
population explosion is controlled. Indeed hunger, distress and unemployment will
rule the land unless the birth rate is reduced to an optimum level.

ENTREPRENERSHIP CAN TACKLE THE

PROBLEM
As our former president Late Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam said many a times and
mentioned in his book INDIA 2020, “Our youth needs to be more of self sufficient
in terms of skills and practical application of their skills. Most of it can be achieved
through Entrepreneurship, it will change the employment and financial condition
drastically.”
He was a man of a country driven vision and was very accurate!
Entrepreneurship can surely improve the conditions of current unemployment rate
and can help our youth to apply their skillsets in every field possible.
Our government is also helping young budding entrepreneurs by establishing
various programs and TBIs in each and every college.

WHAT THE YOUTH THINK

The above provided mentioned data is reseach data collected from the various
literature sources mentioned in our bibliography. But to better understnad this
situation we conducted a survey by under-graduate students of Vellore Institute of
Technology. The survey was taken by 140 students.

The questions included in the survey are given in the annexure of this report along
with the statistical results of the survey.

Summarising the responses of our survey, we found that a majority of 90% students
considered a major threat to the economy of India. Regarding what are the issues
faced by youth looking for employment, students felt gap between practical skills
and theoretical knowledge, lack of experience, and lack of opportunities were the
highest voted for causes in decresing order of votes. The least probable causes were
gender and age.
49.3% students felt that overpopulation is the leading cause of unemployment
followed by lack of techinical qualifications at 17.1% and 14.3% students felt it
was due to lack of job opportunities.

Regarding the age group most affected by unemployment 48.6% felt 18-25 age
group was affected where as 46.4% students felt it was the 25-35 years segment of
people.

Regarding existance of gender bias in unemployment, 39.3% felt it existed while

36.4% were unsure and 24.3% felt it did not exist. 62.1% people felt men were
more affected by unemployemtn as compared to women.

Regarding weather a minimum wage should be provided regardless of age, 51.4%

people voted for a yes. 31.4% were against it whereas 17.1% were unsure.

43.6% rated a 4/5 on how much does unemployment affect mental health. 42.1%
rated a 5/5 on the same issue.

Discussing the affects of unemplyment on society, all our options recieved almost
equivalent responses in the range of 50-70%. The provided options were affects the
economy, poor mental health, increase in crime rates, poor family life and high
suicide rates.

For overcoming youth employment, 62.1% students considered a better education

system as the most required solution followed by regulating population growth at
58.6% votes. 48.6% considered promotion of self employment as another viable
solution.
CONCLUSION
Long term unemployment is THE real nightmare among (not only) young
people in the current circumstances.
Young university graduates see their ambitions shattered as it is virtually
impossible to find employment while most businesses are firing instead of hiring.
We talk about youth unemployment while at the same time talk about a shortage
of skilled labour. The problem isn't necessarily lack of jobs, but rather lack of
young people pursuing studies in the fields where the jobs are. Hence, technical and
practical education is needed so that people can enhance their skills and proceed in
their field of interest.
Self-employment can tackle India’s current youth unemployment state and can
improve the condition drastically.
Keeping pace with the demand of globalized economy with shifting focus on
knowledge-workers and skilled manpower driven employment structure, India’s
youth needs to be empowered with such a value-based education, which inculcates
those necessary ’employment skills.
India should manufacture products as we are only importing and all our money
goes to foreign companies and that is the reason why the value of Indian rupee is so
low. India’s GDP growth has slowed down due to this reason. The Indian economy
has not been in a better shape ever since independence.
However, we have technological solutions to most of these unemployment
issues and if we are steadfast and committed in our approach to solving them, we
can become a vibrant economy in the near future.
