TOPIC: Georgetown Festival

GENERAL PURPOSE: To inform

SPECIFIC PURPOSE STATEMENT: To inform my audience about the aspect of

Georgetown Festival in Penang

CENTRAL IDEA: The George Town Festival is held to celebrate and preserve the local arts,

culture and heritage.

ORGANIZATIONAL METHOD: Topical order

Introduction

1. In 2009, George Town World Heritage Incorporated, a state agency tasked with

monitoring and promoting the city's heritage, had held a day-long festival to mark the

inscription of the historical core of George Town as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

in the previous year.

2. Encouraged by the success of that event, a longer, month-long festival was mooted in

2010. Joe Sidek, a well-known Malaysian artist, was tied in to manage the festival.

3. George Town Festival, otherwise called GTF, is multi month-long arts and culture

spectacle occurring in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. It praises the rich heritage and

history of George Town while additionally furnishing the city with a chance to

encounter international acclaimed arts and culture events from different areas in the

ASEAN locale and beyond.


4. The inaugural George Town Festival event took place in July 2010, held in honour of

the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Status. Now in its ninth year, it has become a vital

part of the Penang’s culture.

5. Festival month is jam-packed, with over one hundred acts, performances, exhibitions

and installations. The best part? Most of them are free and open to the public.

Body

The artistic performance including dance, music and theatre as well as photography and

heritage exhibition.

1. Dance performance by local and international performer

I. Along the event there will be a lot of dance performance either from local

and international performers.

II. one of the most popular dance performances in Georgetown Festival is

called Second Body a dance performance from Taiwan

of movement itself. Welcome to Second Body, the performance generating

an out-of-body experience.

IV. The performance begins by establishing and examining the body, with light

and sound used to create both abstract and very strong recognisable visuals

of the natural human body and the way it moves. Movement is used to

represent our awareness and knowledge of our own bodies.


2. Music performances

I. Music performances in Georgetown Festival are mostly performed by an

international performer

II. One of the performances that attract most people is from group called

Ensemble Q from Australia.

III. Ensemble Q is the Ensemble in Residence of the Queensland

Conservatorium of Music. It is an energizing group of a portion of

Australia's most prominent musicians, selected for their enthusiasm and

character by co-artistic director Paul Dean and Trish O'Brien. At the core of

Ensemble Q is a splendid mentorship program for hopeful youthful

musicians who are supported by the absolute best musicians in Australia.

IV. This group performed Mozart arr Emerson Papamina Suite (music from

the Magic Flute), Janacek arr Emerson String Quartet No 1 for Trio (cl, vcl,

pf) and Messiaen Quartet for the End of Time.

3. Theatre performances

I. Georgetown Festival also bring a theatre performance to the event as it is

one of the less known artistic performance by public.

II. Under the Kayon Tree features some of Malaysia’s top musicians and

performers

III. Under the Kayon Tree brings to life Malaysian legends and folklore with

Puteri Hang Li Po, Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, Sultan Parameswara and

Mahsuri as the combatant.

IV. The subtext of these stories carries a subtle thought-provoking social

message and approach the audience to introspect.


V. The production will also showcase dance and theatre to support the stories.

4. Photography Exhibition

I. Photography called Over Penang was featured in Georgetown Festival

II. Over Penang is the homecoming presentation by David ST Loh, a Penangite

who left the island 30 years prior and has since come back with a renewed

point of view of the island that he was born in.

III. Situated in Penang since November 2017, he has been exploring the island

with a renewed enthusiasm, finding new and fascinating things to see and

photo, ashore or above.

IV. A photojournalist in the past with The Star Malaysia, Reuters and at present

The Malaysian Insight, he sees things with a sharp eye for points of interest.

V. There is a recharged feel of how the city has changed yet additionally how

the island is keeping up its substance by combining heritage and

advancement.

preservation.
5. Heritage exhibition

I. Georgetown Festival gladly displays the festival opening show

KELANTAN: A Living Heritage – a show celebrating Kelantan, an old and

traditional fortress of Malay culture once in a while known as the 'Cradle of

Malay Culture'.

II. With KELANTAN, GTF will celebrate and respect its interesting and

ethereal embroidered artwork woven through its charming artistic form.

III. The exhibition of KELANTAN will highlight Rebana Ubi, the enormous

traditional drum,

IV. Asyik, a royal court dance, an essence of Mak Yong, a conventional type of

northern dance-drama,

V. dance piece Dikir arranged by Raziman Sarbini and Dikir Barat, the

Conclusion

I. Georgetown Festival has become one of the vital parts of Penang culture
