Roles of Visual in Teaching and Learning :

Help Store Images are the simplest and the most effective way to make sure
Information that the information gets stored as a long-term memory.
Longer
our short term memory processes words and can only retain
about seven bits of information.

Aid Better Visuals help learners grasp concepts easily by stimulating

Comprehension imagination and affecting their cognitive capabilities.

the visual language is also known to have the potential to stretch

‘human bandwidth’ – which comprises absorbing,
comprehending and analysing new information.

Drive Most of the students struggle with some of their subjects

Motivation because they find them uninteresting and hence lack the
motivation to put in the required efforts.

Captivating images, engaging videos, interesting info graphics,

etc. help learners fight the boredom and motivate them to do
better.
VISUAL DESIGN PRINCIPLES :

Alignment  helps create a sharp, ordered appearance by

ensuring the elements have a pleasing connection
with each other.
 Aligning objects properly will clean up a design
and eliminate the messiness or sloppiness that
can occur when elements are placed randomly.

Contrast  lets you draw out the most important elements of

a design and add emphasis.
 happens when two design elements are in
opposition to each other, like black and white,
thick and thin, modern and traditional, etc.
 helps guide the viewer’s eyes to the most
important parts of your design and helps organize
the information in an easily digestible manner.

Repetition  helps strengthen the overall look of the design.

 ties together different elements to help them
remain organized and more consistent.

Balance  gives a design its form and stability and helps to

distribute the elements evenly throughout your
design; this even spacing will offer an appearance
that is professional and attractive instead of being
jumbled and messy.

Color  largely responsible for dictating the mood of a

design — each color has something a little
different to say.
 Green tends to make people think of non-profits
or the environment, while red causes stormy
emotions like anger, blue is more calming and
passive, and yellow creates a sensation of
happiness.
7 Ways to Use Visuals as Teaching Tools

Below are some of my favorite ways that I use visuals in my classroom:

1. to tell a story of a particular person or event

2. to spark a conversation

3. to stimulate inquiry

4. to reach your visual learners

5. to reach your struggling readers

6. as an assessment

7. for higher level thinking such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation

Teacher's Guide: Analyzing Primary Sources

Observe: Have students identify and note details

 What do you notice first?

 Find something small but interesting

 What do you notice that you didn't expect?

 What do you notice that you can't explain?

 What do you notice now that you didn't earlier?

Reflect: Encourage students to generate and test hypotheses about the source.

 Where do you think this came from?

 Why do you think somebody made this?

 What do you think was happening when this was made?

 Who do you think was the audience for this item?

 What tool was used to create this?

 Why do you think this item is important?

 If someone made this today, what would be different?

 What can you learn from examining this?

Question: Have students ask questions to lead to more observations and reflections.

Further Investigation: Help students to identify questions appropriate for further
investigation, and to develop a research strategy for finding answers.

What more do you want to know, and how can you find out?

Follow up activity ideas:

Beginning: Have students compare two related primary source items

Intermediate: Have students expand or alter textbook explanations of history based

on primary sources they study.

Advanced: Ask students to consider how a series of primary sources support or

challenge information and understanding on a particular topic. have students refine
or revise conclusions based on their study of each subsequent primary source.
