All questions carry equal marks

1. a) A surface of area 3 m2 and at 200 OC exchanges heat with another surface at 30 OC by
radiation. If value of factor due to the geometric location and emissivity is 0.60,
Determine:
i) The rate of heat transfer, ii) The valve of thermal resistance,
iii) The equivalent convection coefficient. [5]
b) A furnace wall consists of three layers. The inner layer of 10 cm thickness is made of
firebrick (k =1.04 W/mK). The intermediate layer of 25 cm thickness is made of masonry
brick (k = 0.69 W/mK) followed by a 5 cm thick concrete wall (k = 1.37 W/mK). When the
furnace is in continuous operation the inner surface of the furnace is at 800°C while the
outer concrete surface is at 50°C. Calculate the rate of heat loss per unit area of the wall,
the temperature at the interface of the firebrick and masonry brick and the temperature
at the interface of the masonry brick and concrete. [5]

2. Derive general differential equation of heat conduction in cylindrical coordinates. [10]
3. a) A spherical shaped vessel of 1.4 m diameter is 90 mm thick. Find the rate of heat
leakage, if the temperature difference between the inner and outer surfaces is 220 OC.
Thermal conductivity of the material of the sphere is 0.083 W/m OC. [6]
b) Define the Biot and Fourier numbers. [4]
4. a) Distinguish between free and forced convection giving examples. [4]
b) A vertical cylinder 1.5 m high and 180 mm in diameter is maintained at 100 OC in an
atmosphere environment of 20 OC. Calculate heat loss by free convection from the
surface of the cylinder. Assume properties of air at mean temperature as, density

5. A hot plate 1.2 m wide, 0.35 m high and at 115 OC is exposed to the ambient still air at
25 OC. Calculate the following:
i) Maximum velocity at 180 mm from the leading edge of the plate;
ii) The boundary layer thickness at 180 mm from the leading edge of the plate;
iii) Local heat transfer coefficient at 180 mm from the leading edge of the plate;
iv) Average heat transfer coefficient over the surface of the plate.
v) Total mass flow through the boundary. [10]
6. A wire of 1.2 mm diameter and 200 mm length is submerged horizontally in water at 7
bars. The wire carries a current of 135A within applied voltage of 2.18 V. If the surface of
the wire is maintained at 2000C. Calculate: [10]
i) The heat flux. ii) The boiling heat transfer coefficient
7. a) What is the Stefan-Boltzmann law? [4]
b) Distinguish between film wise and drop wise condensation. Which of the two gives a
higher heat transfer coefficient? [6]
8. The flow rates of hot and cold water streams running through a parallel flow heat
exchanger are 0.2 kg/s and 0.5 kg/s respectively. The inlet temperatures on hot and cold
sides are 750C and 200C respectively. The exit temperature of hot water is 45 0C. If the
individual heat transfer coefficients on both sides are 650 W/m 2 oC, calculate the area of
heat exchanger. [10]
