Three babies are born per minute

A total of 1,669,442 live births was recorded for the year 2003 or a minimal increase of 0.2 percent
from 1,666,773 in 2002. The top three regions were National Capital Region, CALABARZON, and
Central Luzon with 16.8 percent, 14.2 percent, and 11.7 percent of the total, respectively. On the
other hand, the lowest record of birth was in the Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (ARMM)
with 14,730 comprising only 0.9 percent of the total birth count.

The population of the Philippines has been steadily growing for many years. It is the 13th most
populated country in the world, between Mexico and Ethiopia.The country of the Philippines is an
archipelago made up of over 7,000 islands that total 115,831 square miles (300,000 square
kilometers). Most of the islands are pretty small, but a few larger ones like Luzon and Mindanao
account for a large portion of the surface area.

Dengue death toll rises to 491 in July

From January 1 to July 6, the Department of Health records a total of 115,986 dengue cases
nationwide

MANILA, Philippines – A total of 491 people have died due to dengue this year as of July 6, according
to the latest figures released by the Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday, July 20.
This is higher than the 336 deaths recorded during the same period last year. Earlier this week, the
DOH recorded 456 deaths for the period covering January 1 to June 30, 2019.

Based on the DOH monitoring from June 30 to July 6, there were 5,744 more cases nationwide, or a
22% spike from last year's 4,703. This figure brings the total number of cases to 115,986 across the
country since January 1.

According to DOH figures, Western Visayas recorded the most cases at 15,826, followed by
Calabarzon with 12,780 cases.

Earlier this week, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III declared a national dengue alert as cases
continued to rise in several regions in the country.

Duque explained that dengue cases had been observed to peak every 3 to 4 years, with the last
peak occurring in 2016. Given the pattern, the health department expects an increase in cases this
year.

Highlights

than in 2018, in spite of a delayed rainy season.

Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 0.43% as of 27 July 2019 is lower than in the same time period in 2018
(0.54%), but still significantly higher than the regional average of 0.22% in the Western Pacific.

The Philippines Department of Health (DOH) declared a National Dengue Epidemic on 6 August 2019,
urging all regional DOH offices to step up dengue surveillance, case management and outbreak
re-sponse, clean-up drives, and vector control in health facilities and communities, conduct Sabayang
4-O’Clock Habit Para sa Deng-Get Out focusing on search and destroy of mosquito breeding sites, and
to enable LGUs to use their quick response funds to help address the epidemic.

Current Situation

Between 1 Jan to 27 July 2019, 167,607 dengue cases including 720 deaths were reported through the
DOH routine surveillance system, with a CFR of 0.43%.

With a median age of 12 years, the most affected age group among dengue cases is 5-9 years (23%).
Similarly, the most affected age group among dengue deaths is 5-9 years (42%). The majority of
dengue cases are male (52%), whereas the majority of dengue deaths are female (54%).

CFR is highest in regions XI (.58%), BARMM (.87%), and V (0.57%), whereas incidence is highest in
regions VI, IV-A, XIII, IX, X.

Siaton is a coastal municipality in the province of Negros Oriental.

The municipality has a land area of 335.90 square kilometers or 129.69 square miles which constitutes
6.24% of Negros Oriental's total area. Its population as determined by the 2015 Census was 77,696.
This represented 5.73% of the total population of Negros Oriental province, or 1.05% of the overall
population of the Central Visayas region. Based on these figures, the population density is computed
at 231 inhabitants per square kilometer or 599 inhabitants per square mile.
