DOMAIN AND RANGE FUNCTION

NAME _______________________________

A. When given as a set of ordered pairs, the domain and range can be described by listing the
first coordinates as the domain and the second coordinates as the range.

Ordered Pairs List the domain and range. Function?

a. { (1,3), (5,7), (7,9), (11,13) } Domain ={ } Range ={ }
b. { (1,7), (1,-7), (4,-2), (4,2) } Domain ={ } Range ={ }
c. { (4,1), (-3,1), (0,1), (2,1) } Domain ={ } Range ={ }

B. When represented in graphical form, the domain is the set of all x-coordinates and the range is the
set of all y-coordinates. Determine the domain and range for the graphs below.

C. When given in equation form we must determine any values for "x" that make the function
"undefined".
7
Example: Given f(x) = , Then f(2) = _____, f(11) = ______, but f(-3) = _______.
x3

Since f(-3) = ____________ –3 is not in the domain of the function.

We write: Domain = {x| x is a real number and x  -3}.

To determine any values that are not in the domain of a function we write: denominator  0 and solve
for the variable. The resulting value(s) must be excluded from the domain of the function. If there is
no denominator or if the denominator has no variables, then the domain is “all real numbers”.
Find the domain of the following functions.

Equation(s) Domain
Example:
3
f(x) = x-50 {x|x is a real number & x  5}
x5
x5
