Needs Analysis
An analysis of learners’ need is a basic of education program which is the basic assumption of
the curriculum development. Need analysis is the procedure used to know the learners’ need.
From the 1960s, the demand for specialized language program s grew and applied linguistic
increasingly began to employee needs analysis procedure in language teaching.
Purposes of needs analysis:
 To find out the learners’ need in language skill to perform a particular role
 To help the student to determine what are their needs
 To determine the students that need more training in language skill
 To identify the important change of direction
Need is dependent on judgement and reflects the interest and values of those making such a
judgement.
The users of needs analysis
 Curriculum officers in the ministry of education

 Staff of tertiary institution
The target population, the people about whom information will be collected

involved.

Situation analysis
The goal of needs analysis is to collect information that can be used to develop a profile of the
language needs of a group of learners in order to be able to make decision about the goals and
content about the language course.
The goal of situation analysis is to identify key factors that might positively or negatively affect
the implementation of curriculum plan.
The examples that illustrate the kinds of factors that can have an impact on the success
curriculum :
 The education department in an EFL country decides to introduce English from the third
elementary school rather than in high school.
 A team of foreign experts under contract to an international funding body is given a
contract to write of textbooks.
