CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

The use of technology is changing the way things are done, including the
work in tertiary institutions where the teaching and learning process required a great
deal of improvement. Knowing fully that internet is an essential tool for facilitating
academic activities in tertiary institutions, for a number of years now, the managers of
these tertiary institutions of learning have invested heavily in establishing internet
services in their schools. The services provided by internet have had a major impact in
the university context, in organisation and in teaching and learning methods.

According to Emeka and Nyeche (2016) the internet today is a worldwide

entity whose nature cannot be easily or simply defined. To many, the internet is a large
computer network linking together millions of smaller computers at numerous sites in
various countries belonging to thousands of business, government, research,
educational and other organisations. To the internet users, the internet is a global
community-one with a very active life. In today world, the Internet plays a vital role in
the teaching, research and learning process in academic institutions. Thus, the advent
of the Internet has heralded the emergence of a new form of knowledge production
and distribution – the soft form. (Jibrin, 2017)

Since the emergence of the Internet, it has become an important medium of

communication as well as a research and leisure tool. The reason is that it provides
many opportunities to many people around the world in many different ways. Not only
the Internet, but the other new digital technologies also took their places in the daily
life. The wide access to these technologies improves people’s lives and provides great
opportunities. People have started to access any kind of information easily on the
2

Internet and also use it for social, educational and entertainment purposes. Basically,
the Internet offers two main benefits which are communication and information
(Warren et. al.,1998).

When educational aspect of the Internet use is considered, it is obvious that

students, or people in general, who look for information can access it easily and with
low cost. It is evident that the Internet is a source of enormous information that
anything can quickly and easily be reached. Internet also provides students
asynchronous education where they can reach any kind of information anytime and
anywhere. Additionally, the Internet can be used as a tool to learn the latest news all
around the world as well as getting any kind of information that serves different
purposes such as learning more information about a hobby or health. Therefore, it can
be said that the Internet is the source of spreading information quickly to a large
audience and of going beyond the limitation of time and space.

When the previous studies on the Internet are examined, it can clearly be
seen that the majority is focused on the differences between learning outcomes of the
courses taught with using the Internet and the courses taught in the traditional ways
(Benoit et. al., 2006). However, it is important to be aware of the fact that students are
not inactive receivers during the transmission of knowledge via the Internet. The
efficacy of students and looking at the picture through their eyes is vitally important in
the way to reach success. As a result of the reasons supported by the literature and
mentioned above, the aim of this study is look at the students’ use of the Internet in
their academic studies. (Dogruer, Eyyam and Menevis, 2011)

Statement of the Problem

This study intends to determine the extent to establish internet café within the
premises of Holy Cross College of Carigara. Specifically, this study pursues to find
answers to the following questions:

This study aims to answer the following question:

1. What is the frequency of internet use among the students?

2. How useful is the internet to students in their daily academic activities?

3. Which is the most used internet service?

4. Do the internet services influence students’ academic performance?

5. What are the problems faced by students in using internet services?

Null Hypotheses:

The proposed study advanced the following null hypotheses:

1. There is no significant relationship between the Profile of the Respondents and

the programs available in the College Department of Holy Cross College of
Carigara in order to establish internet café in HCCC ; and
2. There is no significant relationship between the programs available in the College
Department of Holy Cross College of Carigara in order to establish internet café
in college department and the problems identified in this study

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

On November 4, 2015, the Philippine Declaration on Internet Rights and

Principles was launched after several months of collective drafting and consultations
with civil society internet rights groups and the ICT policy community.

The Declaration focused on ten areas:

1. Internet access for all

2. Democratizing the architecture of the internet
3. Freedom of expression and association
4. Right to privacy and protection of personal data
5. Openness and access to information, knowledge and culture
6. Socio-economic empowerment and innovation
7. Education and digital literacy
8. Liberty, safety and security on the Internet
9. Internet and ICTs for environmental sustainability.

The Declaration is a reflection of the dreams, hopes, and aspirations of Filipinos of

what the Philippine Internet should be. It hopes to serve as a basis for public
education, advocacy, networking and campaigns on ICT, human rights, and
development.

Emphasizing the responsibility of the State to always respect, protect and fulfill human
rights, as also the responsibility of the private sector including Internet intermediaries
to respect the human rights of their users consistent with the United Nations Guiding
Principles on Business and Human Rights.

It is in this basis, that this study is being undertaken by this researcher.

Scope and Delimitation of the study

This study covers College Students. Also, the study is not restricted to any gender. It
includes both male and female, and undergraduates at all level of study.

The study was conducted to College Students who are enrolled during the School
Year 2019-2020 at Holy Cross College of Carigara.
6

The instrument is entitled: “Establishing Internet Café Within the Premises of

Holy Cross College of Carigara.”

Significance of the Study

The study could be beneficial for students as well as for the institution. The
valuable feedback gotten from respondents should help students to realise the
benefits of internet in their education. Institutes can invest more in internet facilities to
enhance the academic performance of their student and produce better results. Note
that the relevance of internet facilities is measured by how effective, sufficient and
accessible it is to students and users. The research will also provide in-depth insight
into the various internet facilities and how students can be able to use them to
improve academic performance. Specifically, this study is significant to the following:

Holy Cross College of Carigara. This study will help boost the college enrolment in Holy
Cross College of Carigara if students will prefer to study in HCCC.

College Dean. This will offer opportunities on how to improve the platforms that would
strengthen services of students across all course levels.
College Faculty. This will encourage the College Faculty to use approaches in their
teaching to empower and build confidence and leadership skills of the college
students.

Students. This will provide the students better learning competencies on how to
develop their abilities and realize their responsibilities to develop competitive skills in
their respective field of discipline.
7

Researchers. This will provide new information for future researchers related to
this study.

Definition of Terms
The following Definition of Terms are used conceptually and operationally in order to
gain better understanding of the presentation for this paper:

Technology – for this study it is a body of knowledge devoted to creating tools,

processing actions and the extracting of materials.

Internet – for this study it is a computer network providing a variety of information and
communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized
communication protocols.

Faculty – for this study these are the College Instructors who teach in the tertiary
department.

Facilities – for this study it refers to the internet café that can be used by students
for study and research.

Accessibility – for this study it is the practice of making your websites usable by
as many people as possible. We traditionally think of this as being about people
with disabilities, but the practice of making site.
