LECTURE METHOD

INTRODUCTION
The lecture is a teaching procedure consisting of
clarification of explanation of the facts, principles, or relationships which the
teacher wishes the class to understand .Usually the students do not converse
with the teacher .They might ask few questions, but these are for sake of
clarification and not for the sake of discussion.

DEFINITION
“ The lecture is a pedagogical method whereby the teacher formally delivers a
carefully planned expository address on some particular topic or problem”

Lecture is a teaching activity where by the teacher presents the content in


comprehensible manner by explaining the facts, principles, relationships
,during which the teacher is explained to elicit student participation by
employing appropriate techniques.

OBJECTIVES
1.Transmit information.

2.Create interest.

3.Promote understanding.

PURPOSE OF LECTURE
 To provide structured knowledge.
 To motivate and guide in hunting knowledge.
 To arouse students’s interest in a subject.
 Introduce students to new areas of learning.
 To clarify difficult concepts
 To assist in preparing students for a discussion
 To promote critical thinking.
TECHNIQUE OF LECTURE
 Organise the class room in a way which is conducivefor teaching
learning activity.
 Prepare lesson plan on the topic which need to be discussed showing
objectives ,content, teaching learning activity, AV aids & time.
 Start the lecture with introduction of self , if not introduced earlier
,introduce the topic and review the previous topic.
 Organise the content matter,which needs to be lectured in the
classroom.
 Alter the pitch and volume of voice periodically while lecturing.
 Develop a routine pace depending on the respectively on the level of
students such as going fast while teaching simple topic and slow down
in teaching difficult topic.
 Maintain eye contact and avoid looking out of windows, at walls and
over students head while teaching.
 Do not repeat words.
 Make use of appropriate AV aids.
 Converse freely with the students .look in between the prepared notes,
but do not read the content continuously.
 Make use of simple plans and use key points from contents around
which the whole lecture is based.
 Clarify the previous concepts before moving towards next topic
 Manage the lecture in planned time as teaching in less time will enable
students to understand and more time than expected arise tension and
damage the lecture.

PREPARATION OF THE LECTURE


 Objectives of the course and immediate objective of the lecture.
 Lecturer must know her material thoroughly.
 Lecturer should have a central theme carried in completion in each
delivery.
 Should contain sequence of ideas with simple heading and sub headings.
 The teacher will make sure that the important points in her class are
made before advancing to the next points.
 The teacher will use illustrations and interact questions o help to clarify
points before students become too fatigued from the strain of intense
lightining.
 A lecture is teacher-centerd ,the expert teacher will compensate for the
restriction of student’s verbal expression by sensing how her students
are responding in thought to what is being said.
 The lecture should provide internals for clarification of thoughts,
assimilations of ideas.

FUNCTIONS
 Delivers the relevant knowledge in an organized way.
 Provide refereces to the students to gather information.
 Provides abrief introduction on knowledge of learniong before
demonstrating the skills or introducing new areas of learning
 Clarifies concepts with illustration

FACTORS IN GOOD LECTURE TECHNIQUE


 Lecturer should be careful about her personal appearance.
 Teachers should let their personality speaks
 Mannerism should be avoided
 Voice should be audible to the class.
 An audience should be spoken to not spoken at so the teacher should
address the students with her weyes as well as her voice.
 Always necessary to get off to a good start.

MERITS OF LECTURE METHOD


 Lecture method stimulates students and promotes critical thinking
process.
 Lecture method meets the learning needs of the learners as it is based on
need and interest of the learners.
 It apparently saves resources.
 It provides the presence of teacher with the students.
 It gives a feeling of security to the students
 It caters to a large group of learners at a time.
 It provides flexibility as the teachers is in close contact with his/her
students.
 The teacher can adjust his/her techniques in accordance with the
learner’s abilities, aptitudes and interest.

DEMERITS OF LECTURE METHOD


 It keeps the pupils in a passive situations
 It does not allow for individual pace of learning
 Lecture method hardly offers any possibility of checking the learning
progress.
 It does not facilitates problem solving.
 In lecture method ,less attention is paid to problem solving, feedback
from learners ,decision making & critical thinking.
 If the lecture is not prepared before hand it fails to attain the objectives.
 Lecture method fails to sustain the attention, concentration and interest
of the learners.

GUIDELINES FOR AN EFFECTIVE LECTURE


 A specific topic or an information should be arrange in such a way as to
leave a single ,clear impression on minds of the students.
 A teacher should utilize the different ways of presenting the same
information.
 The teacher should have pause in between the lesson so that the student
may gain knowledge bit by bit
 Pictoral illustration such as pictures ,maps, charts, should be freely used
as these help in motivating the learners.
 The learners should be encouraged to ask questions .This will enable
them to clarify their doubts.
 Actual objects models , diagrams and sketches should be used.
 The lesson be divides into sections which will have logical sequence. This
will enable learners to understand easily and also trained them in
systematic thinking besides assisting them to put their thoughts
logically.
