Dried Java Plum ( ) Seeds as an Alternative Active Carbon present in Water Filter
By:
DJ Nishka G. Paredes
INTRODUCTION
Purified water has become one the worlds most common and important daily
biological contaminants, suspended solids and gases from contaminated water. The goal is to
produce water fit for a specific purpose. Most water is purified for human consumption
(drinking water), but water purification may also be designed for a variety of other purposes,
applications. In general, the methods used include physical processes such as filtration,
sedimentation, and distillation; Biological processes such as slow sand filters or biologically
Active Carbon. Nowadays, purified water is sold at expensive rate, and some of these are
using Commercial Active Carbon that can be seen in the market. In this study, the use of Java
Plum (Syzygium cumini) seeds as Active Carbon in water filter/water purifier to filter the

The dried Java Plum Seeds were needed to be compared with commercial active
carbon for effectiveness in filtering the water. The samples that will be obtained are from the
METHODOLOGY
Research Design
The design used in this research study was the experimental research design.
Specifically, the Pretest-Post Test design is chosen because the control group will be tested
first and then will be treated in two setups. The Control Group will be compared to the results
in both the Alternative Active Carbon and the Commercial Active Carbon.
Gathering of Materials
C. Constructing an Improvise
Filter for Activated Carbon
D. Laboratory Testing
The 2 kilograms of dry Java Plum seeds will be gathered and will be collected at Caraga
Regional Science High School. The other materials that will be use were mortar and pestle,
pebbles, cotton, 2-liter pitcher, nine glasses for the water samples, commercial active carbon
for comparison and common household items for the improvise filter. Two liters of dirty
water samples will be gathered and collect at Kinabutan Bridge. Three 1.5 plastic bottles will
The Java Plum seeds will be manually peeled and then let it dry. After drying, the seeds
The alternative activated carbon will be constructed. Three plastic bottle will be used to
make each of the water filters. It will be layered first with 20% cotton at the bottom of the cap
of the bottle, and then 30% pounded dry Java Plum seeds, 50% pebble. A small hole was cut
out of the cap so the water sample will pass through filter. The alternative activated carbon
will be tested and compared with the commercial activated carbon by pouring contaminated
D. Laboratory Testing
The water that will be filtered by the commercial and alternative carbon will be tested
at . The results of the alternative active carbon will be compared by commercial active
carbon and see if it is effective as an Alternative Active Carbon to purify the Contaminated
water.
