Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

Purified water has become one the worlds most common and important daily

necessities of mankind. Water purification is the process of removing undesirable chemicals,

biological contaminants, suspended solids and gases from contaminated water. The goal is to

produce water fit for a specific purpose. Most water is purified for human consumption

(drinking water), but water purification may also be designed for a variety of other purposes,

including meeting the requirements of medical, pharmacological, chemical and industrial

applications. In general, the methods used include physical processes such as filtration,

sedimentation, and distillation; Biological processes such as slow sand filters or biologically

Active Carbon. Nowadays, purified water is sold at expensive rate, and some of these are

using Commercial Active Carbon that can be seen in the market. In this study, the use of Java

Plum (Syzygium cumini) seeds as Active Carbon in water filter/water purifier to filter the

contaminants from their tap water in such a low price.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine if dried Java Plum Seeds can be an effective as an

alternative active carbon to filter the water.

Specific Problem:

1 Can the dried Java Plum Seeds be an alternative active carbon effective in purifying ware in

terms of the Total Suspended Solids present in the contaminated water?

2 Is there a difference between Commercial Active Carbon and Dried Java Plums Seeds in

purifying water?

HYPOTHESIS

Ho: There is no significant difference between the Alternative Active Carbon and the

Commercial Active Carbon in terms of the effectiveness in purifying water.

Ha: There is a significant difference between the Alternative Active Carbon and the

Commercial Active Carbon in terms of the effectiveness in purifying water.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study has a great help to poor families in having their own water filters and

active carbons by means of saving money from buying commercial active carbons or water

filters which are more expensive compared with this study.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The dried Java Plum Seeds were needed to be compared with commercial active

carbon for effectiveness in filtering the water. The samples that will be obtained are from the

tap water; other sources of water will be not included.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The design used in this research study was the experimental research design.

Specifically, the Pretest-Post Test design is chosen because the control group will be tested

first and then will be treated in two setups. The Control Group will be compared to the results

in both the Alternative Active Carbon and the Commercial Active Carbon.

Gathering of Materials

A. Gathering of Java Plum

Seeds and Dirty Water Samples

B. Pounding the Java Plum

Seeds

C. Constructing an Improvise
Filter for Activated Carbon

D. Laboratory Testing

E. Gathering and Collecting of

Data
A. Gathering of dry Java Plum seeds and Dirty Water Samples.

The 2 kilograms of dry Java Plum seeds will be gathered and will be collected at Caraga

Regional Science High School. The other materials that will be use were mortar and pestle,

pebbles, cotton, 2-liter pitcher, nine glasses for the water samples, commercial active carbon

for comparison and common household items for the improvise filter. Two liters of dirty

water samples will be gathered and collect at Kinabutan Bridge. Three 1.5 plastic bottles will

be reuse to make an improvise water filter.

B. Pounding the Java Plum Seeds

The Java Plum seeds will be manually peeled and then let it dry. After drying, the seeds

will be pound using a mortar and pestle.

C. Constructing an Improvise Filter for Activated Carbon

The alternative activated carbon will be constructed. Three plastic bottle will be used to

make each of the water filters. It will be layered first with 20% cotton at the bottom of the cap

of the bottle, and then 30% pounded dry Java Plum seeds, 50% pebble. A small hole was cut

out of the cap so the water sample will pass through filter. The alternative activated carbon

will be tested and compared with the commercial activated carbon by pouring contaminated

water into the filter.

D. Laboratory Testing

The water that will be filtered by the commercial and alternative carbon will be tested

at . The results of the alternative active carbon will be compared by commercial active

carbon and see if it is effective as an Alternative Active Carbon to purify the Contaminated

water.
E. Gathering and Collecting of Data

The Researchers will collect all the data.
