ICT Enabled Lesson plan

Name of the teacher: Delna Joseph

Name of the school: HFHSS, Padathukadavu Class : IX
Subject : Physics
Unit : Motion and Equations of Motion Duration : 40 minutes
Topic : Vector nature of Force
Date :

Learning outcome:  The learner will be able to observe and predict what happens when a certain amount of force
is being applied.
 The learner will be able to understand why direction is also important for some quantities.
 The learner will be able to understand the concept of vectors.
 The learner will be able to understand that force is a vector quantity.

New term: Vector

Facts: force is a vector quantity
Concepts/ Understanding:  A vector is a quantity having direction as well as magnitude, especially as determining the
position of one point in space relative to another.
 force is a vector quantity

Process Skills: Observation

The learner observes given pictures
Inference
The learner draws conclusion from the given pictures
Communication
The learner shares his inferences regarding the picture to the audiences

Values and attributes: Scientific attitude, logical thinking, imagination

Learning aids: ICT
PowerPoint presentation showing various occasions of force being applied
Prerequisites: The learner should be familiar with many day to day life experiences like rope pulling, arm wrestling
etc

Process Assessment
Introductory Phase
[Teacher shows picture of an ant pulling the rope background.]

You can see a pull rope between some ants.

There is a giant ant on oneside and few small ants on the other side. What do you think about
the winner of this rope pull? Those who support giant and as the winner, please raise your
hands. And those who support the other ants please raise your hands .
Alright. The point is that, actually we can’t specifically say which group will win until we
know which group exerts greater force.

Developmentary Phase
I am going to show you some situations where forces are being applied.
Observe the picture, and say what happends.

Fig 3.2
will the table move or not?

Fig 3.4
Who will win?

Fig 3.3
Will the table move or not? in which direction the table will move? Towards left or right?

In which direction will the ball move?

which dog will win, the small one or the larger ones?

Fig 3.5 edited

In which direction will the rope move? Does it move?9editedpic0

Fig 3.5
What about in this case? Does the rope move? To which direction? (300N and 400N)

When we apply force on an object, it does move.

But in some of the situations mentioned above, even though a force is being applied the
changes due to force does not happends always.
In the first case, force is applied, but no change happen to the table. The table didn't move.
In next case, both applied force but the hands were immovable.
What you can infer from these?
Not only the magnitude of, but also the direction of applying force is does matter. So that I
action of applied force or so does matter. The quantities having magnitude and directions are
called vectors. So force is a vector quantity.
Since force is a vector quantity, the direction of applied force does matter. Force applying in
any particular direction is taken as positive and force in opposite direction is taken as
negative.
Usually force towards right side is taken as +ve and towards left considers as –ve.

Activity 1
Teacher provides a task card containing five situations of applying force and instructs the
students to complete the table according to that.
Consolidation
 Force is a vector quantity.
 The magnitude as well as the direction should does matter.
 Force along one particular direction is considered as =ve whilw the opposite direction
can consider as –ve.

Review Questions
 Define vector quantities.
 Is force a vector quantity?
 What is the unit of force?

Concluding Phase
 Force is a vector quantity.
 Force along one particular direction is considered as positive and force along
opposite direction is a negative quantity.

Follow-up activity
Two persons are pulling a luggage towards them from opposite sides. Person A
applies 350N and Person B applies 280N force. Who will get the luggage? In which
direction it’ll move?
