DIRECTIONS: On a separate sheet of paper number and write the

missing words. Use what you already know about the narrative and
expository writing formats.

In a personal _____________ (1) you are writing a story, telling about

___________ (2) small moment. The paper is organized by sequencing
the events and showing the reader what happened in the
___________(3), ____________(4), and __________(5). The story is
written in first person (I). You are telling your story as you travel
through the events. The reader enjoys becoming part of the story or
visualizing the story. The writer uses ______________(6) details to
show the reader what is happening.

In an ____________(7) essay the writer is _____________(8) what

he/she thinks or feels about the prompt. The paper should include
___________(9) reasons/examples and support. The first paragraph
should include an interesting lead/grabber, _________ ________(10),
your three reasons/examples, and your main idea (or what you
think/feel about the topic. The second paragraph should be about the
_________(11) reason you listed. The third paragraph should re-
state and support the ____________(12) reason you listed, and the
fourth paragraph should re-state and support the
_______________(13) reason you listed. The fifth paragraph should
include a re-statement of your three reasons/examples, prompt
words, and a strong __________(14).

It is important to ___________ (15) before your write. Beginning to

write is often the hardest part. Some prompts, such as baseball, can
be used to write a personal narrative or an expository essay. That is
why it is important to read the ______________ (16) very carefully. I
might want to tell about a very special day I spent with my son,
Tobias, going to a baseball game. I will show the reader what a
wonderful and exciting time I had with my son by writing a
_______________(17). If the prompt was written differently then I
could explain that it is my opinion that going to a college baseball
game is a wonderful family outing. I would use details and examples
to support my theme statement and add personal experiences to
really show the reader my thoughts. If I wrote my paper this way I
would be writing an ________________(18) paper. As you can see, a
single topic can be used for either a personal narrative or an
expository essay.
