COMBINED
BENDING AND
AXIAL MEMBERS
Nearly all members in a structure are subjected to
b th bending
both b di momentt and
d axial
i l fforce.

• A special class of such members that subjected

to both axial compression force and bending
moment are called beam columns
• In principle, all members in frame structures are
y beam-columns, with the two extremes cases:
actually
–beams (F = 0) and
–columns ((M = 0))
• Response of beam columns depends on:
–the wayy in which the applied
pp loading
g is transferred
into the member,
pp
–the form of support p
provided and
–the member's cross-sectional shape
yp
• Types:
–Mono-axial : bending applied about one principal
axis only
y
–Bi-axial : bending applied about two principal axes
• As a non-linear spatial analysis including the effect
of imperfections is difficult, an alternative procedure
which allows verification of the frame elements
using the EBCS buckling curves which take
account of lateral- torsional buckling, shall be take
adopted.
• A three ((two)) dimensional frame shall be analyzed
y
using first order analysis based on the assumption of
no imperfections; and then the individual members
of the frame should then be checked with the
