THE DANGER OF RADIATION

A. UNDERSTANDING RADIATION
On the cellphone there is a transmitter that converts sound into continuous sinusoidal
waves which are then emitted out through the antenna and these waves fluctuate through the air.
These radio waves cause electromagnetic radiation.
Radiation image means transmission or radiation. Radiation is the spread of elementary particles
and radiation energy from a radiation source to the surrounding medium or destination. Radiation
energy can emit electrons from the nucleus and the remaining atoms become positively charged
and are called positive ions. Meanwhile, the electrons released can stay free or bind to other
neutral atoms and form negative ions. This process is called the ionization process.

B. DUE TO EYES RADIATION

The habit of staring at a gadget screen (or television), turned out to have a share in some
of the child's eye health problems. According to research, due to technological developments, it
is estimated that children who wear glasses will experience a 20 percent increase every year. The
eyes of children who are still developing until around the age of 15-16 years, if continuously
used (contracted) tirelessly or resting (such as watching television or 'glaring at' gadgets), can
have the following effects:
• The eye muscles become tired quickly, and make vision blurry.
• The eyeball becomes more flexible / elongated which causes children to be vulnerable to
nearsightedness (myopia).
• The frequency of blinking will decrease, so they will often complain of sore eyes, or
experiencing dry eyes.

The following are the effects of radiation from electronic devices:

• Watery and Tired Eyes
In the short term, the radiation beam can make the eyes become tired and runny. This is because
it is too long in front of the monitor screen. In addition, it also influences the production of the
hormone melatonin, resulting in a variety of complaints, such as dizziness, headaches, fatigue
and insomnia.
• Astenopia
Astenopia is an event where the pupil's reaction to the light becomes slow. This is because the
eyes are over exposed to light.
• Cataracts
UV radiation from a computer / laptop for a long time can cause cataracts or visual impairment
due to turbidity in the eyepiece. In addition, the aging process is one of the causes.
• Dermatitis in the face
This type of disorder is caused by the beam of VDU radiation directly affecting the skin of the
face. This radiation causes the skin to become irritated and reddened.
• Sexual disorders
Sexual disorders or long-term disorders in question is able to reduce fertility for men and
women.

C. HOW TO REDUCE DUE TO CELLPHONE RADIATION FOR EYES

The ways to use the gadget / cellphone properly so as not to damage the vision are as
follows:
a. Adjust the lighting / contrast on the screen of your gadget / cellphone. Do not be too dim or
too bright / glare because the light radiation caused can make the eyes tired and damage the eyes.
b. Do not use the gadget / cellphone in a lying position. We recommend using a gadget /
cellphone in a sitting position.
c. Use the gadget / cellphone in a room that has sufficient lighting. Do not turn off the lights
when using the gadget / cellphone at night in the room because the eyes will focus on the light
from the gadget / cellphone that you use and disturb the nerves of the eye.
d. Keep the gadget / cellphone out of sight, at least half an arm.
e. Don't use the gadget / cellphone for too long ± 10-20 minutes then rest your eyes for a
moment.
D. VITAMIN A FOR EYE HEALTH
In general, vitamin A does help cell metabolism found in the outer layer of the retina,
which functions to adapt to bright and dark light. A person who is deficient in vitamin A can be
exposed to xerophthalmia where the eyeball becomes dry, the cornea hardens and the swelling of
the petals. If not treated, xerophthalmia can cause permanent blindness.
Another function of vitamin A is to prevent the formation of free radicals that can damage retinal
cells and lenses. It is also useful as a cataract prevention and retinal disease such as macular
degeneration. Consumption of vitamin A must be in accordance with the recommended dose of
7500 mcg per day (according to the level of need and age).

Various sources of vitamin A, namely: (Rianti, 2015)

1. Cereals
Derived from yellow corn and wheat
2. Tubes
Tubes that contain lots of vitamin A are yellow yams, steamed yams, red sweet potatoes, red
yams,
3. Grains
From whole grains or beans are peas and red beans
4. Vegetables

spinach, genjer leaves, guava leaves, cashew leaves, long bean leaves, and other forage leaves,
Gandaria, long beans, Chinese cabbage, pumpkin, shy princess, young ranti, seaweed, mustard
greens, clover, and carrots.
