MUSICAL
INSTRUMENTS
Musical instruments are things used to make music.
Examples of musical instruments are guitar, piano, drum,
flute, etc. Based on how the sound is created, musical
instruments can be classified into four basic categories.
They are string instruments, wind instruments, brass
instruments, and percussion instruments.

The string instruments are musical instruments that make

sound by vibrating the strings on it. The strings are
plucked to produce sounds. Each string has a different
frequency. The desired frequency can be obtained by
adjusting the tension on the string. The strings on the
instrument usually come in many shapes and
forms. Examples of the string instruments are guitar, violin,
cello, harp, etc.
The wind instruments use air vibrating in a pipe or tube to
make a sound. The pitch of the sound depends on the
frequency of the air vibration. The frequency of the air
vibration depends on the size or length of the tube. The
bigger the instruments, the deeper the sound is. Flute,
piccolo, and clarinet are wind instruments.
The brass instruments are musical instruments that you
play by blowing through a mouthpiece to change the
pitch, or note. With brass instruments, the sound starts at
the lips. Their mouthpieces just help your lips buzz.
Examples of the brass instruments are trumpet, tuba, and
saxophone.
The percussion instruments are instruments which are
played by shaking or hitting. When you hit or shake the
instruments, the materials of the instruments vibrate. This
vibration creates sounds. Some examples of this
instrument are drum, cymbals, maracas, etc.
