COE’S BOYLE, CENTRAL’S WONG NAMED IIAC FOOTBALL MVPs

WARTBURG’S WILLIS NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR
2010 ALL-IOWA CONFERENCE FOOTBALL TEAM ANNOUNCED

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its major
football awards and All-Conference team for the 2010 season. Coe College junior quarterback Brad Boyle (New
Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska) has been named the 2010 IIAC Football Offensive Most Valuable Player, while
Central College senior defensive lineman Shane Wong (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Southeast Polk) has been named the
2010 IIAC Football Defensive Most Valuable Player. Wartburg College head coach Rick Willis has been named
the 2010 IIAC Football Coach of the Year.

2010 Iowa Conference Football Offensive Most Valuable Player – Brad Boyle, QB, Coe College
In 10 regular season games, Boyle threw for 2,704 yards and 23 touchdowns in 10 regular season games,
completing 64.4 percent of his passes. Entering Saturday’s NCAA playoff game against Wheaton (Ill.), he sits in
the top three in five Coe single-season statistical categories – ranking first in completion percentage, second in
passing touchdowns (record is 25 by Tim Vinyard in 2000) and total offense (at 2,905 now; record is 2,976 set by
Boyle last season), and third in passing yards (record is 2,775 by Vinyard in 2000) and passing completions
(currently at 170; record is 212 set by Boyle last season).

He has thrown for 300-plus yards only twice this season, including a season-high 342 at Luther, but nearly hit the
mark twice more against Olivet Nazarene (299) and Iowa Wesleyan (296). He has also thrown at least one
touchdown pass in each game and passed for three scores five times, including in each of the last four games.
Always a threat to run, especially near the goal line, Boyle also rushed for 201 yards on 93 carries with 17
touchdowns. He led the IIAC in passing (270.4 ypg), pass efficiency (175.4), total offense (290.5 ypg), and
scoring (102 points). Whether through the air or on the ground, Boyle accounted for at least three touchdowns in
each game, maxing out at five on four occasions (Luther, Central, Simpson, and Loras).

Boyle is the second Coe player – and fourth player overall – to repeat as Iowa Conference MVP, joining Simpson’s
Brad Jorgensen (1996-1997), Coe’s Fred Jackson (2001-2002), and Central’s Vance Schuring (2005-2006).

2010 Iowa Conference Football Defensive Most Valuable Player - Shane Wong, DL, Central College
Wong, now a two-time First Team All-Iowa Conference selection, made only 49 tackles this season but made a
living by setting up shop in the opponent’s offensive backfield. In 10 games, he led the league in sacks (11.0)
and tackles-for-loss (17.0) with single-game highs of 10 tackles at Buena Vista on October 30 and 3.5 sacks at
Augustana (Ill.) on September 11. He also recovered two fumbles and blocked a kick. Wong is currently tied for
10th in Division III in sacks (1.1 per game) and tied for 18th in tackles for loss (1.7) while leading a Central
defense that ranks 10th in Division III in sacks (3.4), 14th in tackles for loss (8.0), 17th in rushing yards allowed
(78.7 ypg), and 18th in total defense (255.5 ypg).

In just three years in a Central uniform, Wong ended his career ranked third in both career sacks (31.0) and
career tackles-for-loss (44.0) and second in terms of yards from both sacks (195) and tackles-for-loss (225). He
also led the Iowa Conference in sacks in 2008 with 10.0 to receive honorable mention from the league’s coaches.

Wong becomes the 13th different Central player to earn Iowa Conference MVP honors, totaling 14 separate
awards, and the first since Tim Connell earned the honor in 2007.
2010 Iowa Conference Football Coach of the Year – Rick Willis, Wartburg College
Willis led the Knights to a 10-0 mark overall, the school’s 12th Iowa Conference football title, and a berth in the
2010 NCAA Division III Football Championship. Under his guidance this year, Wartburg ranks among the top-
three in the Conference in 21 statistical areas including leading the IIAC in scoring defense (11.4 ppg), pass
defense efficiency (99.2), kick return average (23.0 ypg), interceptions (20), punting (36.5 net ypg), sacks (37),
fewest sacks against (5), and turnover margin (+1.6). The Knights also ranked second in red zone defense,
holding opponents to scores on only 12 of a league low 18 red zone chances (66.7 percent), and third in red zone
offense, scoring on 82.1 percent (32 of 39) of red zone chances.

Willis, in his 12th season, also captured his 100th career victory during the season with a 28-0 victory at Buena
Vista on October 9. He takes a 105-24 career record into this weekend’s NCAA first round game against Bethel
(Minn.) University. This is the second time Wills has been named Iowa Conference Football Coach of the Year. He
also won the honor in 1999.

The IIAC also announced today the 2010 All-Conference Football Team. The 54-member Team includes 24 repeat
All-Conference honorees, including one – Central punter Kurtis Brondyke – who becomes a four-time All-
Conference performers. Brondyke was a First Team performer in each of his first three seasons before being
named to the Second Team this season. Wartburg senior offensive lineman Morgan O’Connor was also tabbed
as a First Team selection for the third consecutive season. In addition, Wartburg’s Josh VanDenHul scored First
Team honors at defensive back and Second Team honors as a return specialist.

Iowa Conference champion Wartburg College had an IIAC-best 15 All-Conference players, including a league-high
nine First Team members, while Central College had 13 All-Conference players, including eight first-teamers. IIAC
runner-up Coe College had eight All-Conference players with five players selected to the First Team. Buena Vista
University received five All-Conference honors, followed by Loras College (4) and Cornell College, University of
Dubuque, and Luther College (all 3).
