Abstract

Introduction:
Bronchial asthma is a common chronic disease of the respiratory system that affects
approximately 300 million people worldwide (GINA).asthma is a chronic lung disease
characterized by airway asthma is a chronic lung disease characterized by airway
inflammation and hyperresponsiveness of airway smooth muscles .

The mainstay of management is a beta agonist and corticosteroid inhaler. Low blood levels
and low dietary intake of magnesium contribute to the development of asthma.

Nebulised beta agonist in asthmatic is considered to be the first choice of bronchodilator

therapy .some asthmatic patients poorly respond to beta agonist therapy. they also do not
respond to combination therapy with nebulised beta agonist , anticholinergic , locally acting
or intravenous steroids . for such poor responders magnesium sulphate administered either iv
or nebulised as isotonic solution is of help to achieve rapid bronchodilation .

Intravenous magnesium sulphate can relax smooth muscles and hence cause bronchodilation
by competing with calcium at calcium mediated smooth muscle binding sites .
It has been shown there were high prevelance of hypomagnesemia in stable asthmatics with
higher incidence of acute asthma attacks and hospitalization . hence related significantly with
severity of asthma.

Aims and Objectives:

SERUM MAGNESIUM IN BRONCHIAL ASTHMA AND ITS
CORRELATION WITH ITS ACUTE EXACERBATION
Settings and design:
Observational and prospectivestudy.
