ELE205:NETWORK ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS

Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

• Learn about basic concepts of circuits

• Apply the knowledge of basic circuital laws to simplify the network

• Discuss and explain the response of basic networks such as RC,RL and RLC

• Understand and analyze two-port networks

• Design various types of passive filters

• Synthesize Electric networks using Foster Cauer Realization

Unit I
Circuit Concepts and Graph theory : Voltage, Current, Power, Energy, Energy
sources, Independent and dependent Energy sources, Kirchhoff's current law,
Krichhoff's Voltage Law, Current and Voltage Division Laws, Source Transformation
Techniques, Tree and Co-Tree, Incidence Matrix, Properties of Incidence Matrix, Tie
and Cut Set Matrix
Unit II
Network Theorems to DC and AC Circuits : Star delta transformation, Mesh and
Supermesh analysis, Nodal and Super nodal Analysis, Rectangular and Polar
Coordinates, Superposition Theorem, Thevenin's theorem, Norton's theorem,
Maximum Power Transfer Theorem, Reciprocity theorem, Tellegen's theorem,
Applications of Circuits theorems to DC and AC circuits ( for Dependent and
independent sources)
Unit III
Transient Analysis and Laplace Transform for Circuit Analysis : Steady state
and transient response, DC and sinusoidal response of RL circuit, DC and sinusoidal
response of RC circuit, DC and sinusoidal response of RLC circuit, Introduction to
Laplace Transform, Initial value theorem, Final value theorem, Properties of Laplace
Transform and Inverse Laplace Transform, Application of the Laplace transform in
circuit analysis
Unit IV
Two port networks and properties of network functions : Concept of one port
networks, Concept of two-port networks, Z parameters, Y parameters, Hybrid
parameters, ABCD parameters, Condition of reciprocity and symmetry in two port
parameter representation, Inter-relationships between parameters of two port
network, Driving point and transfer functions, Concepts of poles and zeros,
Determination of free and forced response from poles and zeros, Analysis of ladder
networks, Analysis of lattice networks, Analysis of T and bridged-T networks, Analysis
of T and Pie networks
Unit V
Filters : Classification of filters, T section and Pie section, Characteristics impedance,
Propagation Constant, Analysis of prototype Low pass filter, Analysis of prototype
high pass filter, Analysis of prototype Band pass filter, Analysis of prototype band
stop pass filter, m-derived filter, Composite Filter, Introduction of active filters
Unit VI
Network Synthesis : Need of Network synthesis, Hurwitz Polynomials, Positive real
functions, Synthesis of LC Networks by Foster Forms, Synthesis of LC network by
Cauer form, Synthesis of RC Networks by Foster Forms, Synthesis of RL Networks by
Foster Forms, Synthesis of RC network by Cauer form, Synthesis of RL network by
Cauer form
