An example of a MV
protection retrofit project
Site location: United Arab Emirates

Site activity: chemical plant

Total power required by the site: 200 MVA

Number of voltage levels: (4) 132 kV, 33 kV, 11 kV, 3.3 kV

Cost of one hour of down time: US$ 200,000

Reasons for the retrofit project:

c Obsolescence of existing relays.
c Lack of spare parts.
c General tripping at 33 kV level due to incorrect operation of
a protective relay at the 3.3 kV level.

Work performed:
c Retrofit of 86 LV compartments of MV cubicles.
c Discrimination study.
c Upgrading of the protective system.
c Upgrading of relay settings.
c Integration of automatic transfers with the digital relays.

Duration of on-site erection and commissioning:

9 months, scheduled according to the availability of the MV cubicles.

Organization of work: three 8-hour shifts

MV protection retrofit
means:
c The renovation of the LV compartment of MV cubicles,
including:
v protective relays,
v metering,
v automation and local control,
v remote control and supervision,
v improvement of the whole protective system
including additional protective functions and
discrimination studies.
