Professional Growth Plan

Teacher’s Name: ____Desiree Saxe____________________ Grade/Subject(s): ___4th______

Supervising Administrator: ___Debbie Tomasetti_______________________ Date: __9/5/19_____

Goal: Students take ownership in communication with parents by maintaining their own records,
reflecting on data, and sharing taking a leadership role during conferences.

Domain: __4_________________________________________
Component(s): ______4c________________________________
Element(s):_____Engagement of Families____________

Rationale for selecting this goal:

Empowering students to take ownership of their own learning truly aligns with my philosophies as a
teacher. Through Teach for America this is an area that we always strive to incorporate in our
teaching because ultimately it is up to the students to advocate for themselves. We need to give them
to the tools to be able to do that.

Steps to achieve the goal:

 Data folders: Each student will have a data folder to track progress towards his/her individual
goals. I will use the Leader in Me binders to support this.
 Parent Communication: Students help me teach math strategies at curriculum night by
explaining various strategies we’ve learned throughout each unit. Each student will also
facilitate his/her own conference by articulating his/her goals and progress to parents.
 Reflective Grading: After each math and reading unit, students will reflect on each standard
covered by giving a Meets, Approaches, or Emergent rating. After unit tests in reading, we will
grade 3 examples as a class (one example to show each level of understanding – Meets,
Approaches, and Emergent). Then students will grade their own assessment, before I grade it.
This will help me see if students can reflect on their own assessments and learning.
 Monthly Newsletter: Students will design and write a monthly newsletter to communicate with
families. Each team will write a short article and the class will design the overall layout and
headings of the newsletter.

Method(s)/procedures(s) for gathering evidence:

I will gather information from all the bullets mentions above to determine if students are able to
express and communicate their own goals and achievement. Through their data folders for
benchmarks and unit tests, their ability to lead conferences, etc. I can determine if students are really
taking ownership over their own learning.

How will you measure progress?

I will measure progress by interviewing students regularly to see how they can articulate their goals
and growth. During conferences, I will develop a rubric to determine how students can “meet” this
standard by sharing their own goals and progress. I will use the Leader in Me binders as an
opportunity for students to keep track of their successes and areas of growth.
