B. READING

Part I
Directions: Read the following articles below and answer the questions after each.

Passage 1
Many people say that they suffer from stress. Those people usually drive too fast,
eat too fast, and get angry too fast. They do everything too fast. They don’t lead
healthy lives.

Stress can affect everyone, regardless of race, socio- economic status, or age. A lot
of it is due to work. It’s called work-related stress. Doctors, lawyers, and CEOs have
it, taxi drivers, housewives, and senior citizens have it, and kids who are bullied at
school have it. College grads who can’t find jobs also experience it.

Stress is an unavoidable consequence of life. Without it, life, as we know it, would
not exist. However, not all stress is bad because sometimes it makes us work
harder, accomplish our goals faster, but it can also be devastating that it drives
people to drink.

The American Institute of Stress (AIS) calls stress as America’s number one health
problem, and the situation is the same in every other industrialized country in the
world. In a study that stretched out for over 20 years, researchers concluded that
75% to 90% of doctors’ visits were caused by stress-related illnesses. Those illnesses
include heart disease, cancer, and liver disease.

Stress is responsible for most of the absenteeism that occurs in companies large
and small. At times, workers get to the point where they can’t just take it anymore
and decide to call in sick because of stress.
Stress considerably costs much money. Large corporations lose money when
production fails due to absenteeism, worker turnover, and on the job injuries. The
AIS estimates that job-related stress costs US industry 300 billion dollars a year.

Even though stress can’t be avoided completely, it doesn’t mean that there is
nothing that can be done about it. Actually, there are lots of things a stressed-out
person can do to prevent its occurrence:

 Exercise. It’s a proven fact that regular exercise reduces stress. It takes your
mind off your troubles and keeps the body healthy.
 Stop smoking. The biggest myth around is that smoking reduces stress. In
fact, It’s just the opposite. Smoking makes the blood vessels contract, which
makes the heart work harder.
 Meditation. By focusing your attention for a long time on something other
than the cause of your stress, you help your body relax and recuperate.
 Deep breathing. As simple as it sounds, stopping in the middle of a stressful
situation to breathe deeply is a good way to calm down.

Different people prefer different ways to reduce their stress. It doesn’t matter which
method they use, just as long as they have at least one. Stress leads to suicide, and
it kills many people through cancer, heart disease, and cirrhosis of the liver, as a
result of heavy drinking. The smart person will take stress under control and will
not become another statistic.

Passage 2
One of the most interesting authors of the 20 th century, J.R.R. Tolkien, achieved
fame through his highly inventive trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. Born in 1892,
Tolkien received his education from Oxford and then served in World War I. After
the war, he became a professor of Anglo-Saxon and English language and literature
at Oxford University.

Although published in 1965, the three books that comprise The Lord of the Rings
were written in intervals from 1936 to 1949. This was mainly due to Tolkien’s
responsibility as a professor and the outbreak of World War II. By the late 1960s,
this fascinating trilogy had become a sociological phenomenon as young people
intently studied the mythology and legends created by Tolkien.

The trilogy is remarkable not only for its highly developed account of historical
fiction but also for its success as a modern heroic epic. The main plot chronicles the
struggle between good and evil kingdoms as they try to acquire a magic ring that
has power to rule over the world. The novels, which are set in a time called Middle
Earth, describe a detailed fantasy world. Established before humans populated the
Earth, Middle Earth was inhabited by good and evil creatures such as hobbits,
dwarves, elves, monsters, wizards, and some humans. The character and the
setting of Middle Earth were modeled after mythological stories from Greece and
Northern Europe.

Passage 3
In this era of increase global warming and diminishing fossil fuel supplies, we must
begin to prioritize on harnessing alternative energy sources. Fortunately, a number
of readily available, renewable sources are both cost-effective and earth-friendly.
Two such resources are solar power and geothermal power.

Solar energy, which reaches the earth through sunlight, is so abundant that it could
meet the needs of worldwide consumption 6,000 times over. Moreover, it is easily
harnessed through the use of photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight into
electricity. In the US alone, more than 10,000 homes are equipped with solar
electric systems in the form of electric panels or solar roof tiles. And in other parts
of the world, including many developing countries, the use of solar systems is
growing steadily.

Another abundant alternative energy source found in specific geographical areas

is geothermal power, which creates energy by tapping heat from below the surface
of the earth. Hot water and steam trapped in underground pools are pumped into
the surface and used to run a generator enough to produce electricity. Geothermal
energy is 50,000 times more abundant than the entire known supply of fossil fuel
resources. And as with solar power, the technology needed to h geothermal energy
is fairly simple.

A prime example of effective geothermal use is in Iceland, a region of high

geothermal activity, where over 80 percent of private homes are heated by
geothermal energy.

Solar and geothermal energy are just two of a number of promising renewable
alternatives to conventional energy resources. The time is long overdue to invest in
the development and use of alternative energy.
11. What is the main topic of this passage?

a. How energy resources are tapped from nature.

b. Examples of the use of energy resources worldwide
c. Two examples of alternative energy sources that should be further utilized
d. The benefits of solar wind and wind power over conventional energy sources

12. In the passage, why should we consider using alternative energy sources?

a. Because they are free and available worldwide

b. Because fossil fuels are fast diminishing and will soon be exhausted
c. Because conventional energy sources cause environmental damage
d. Because global warming has increased the amount of sunlight that reaches the
earth

13. Which of the following words would best replace the word “harnessing” in
paragraph 1?

a. Directing
b. Harassing
c. Depleting
d. Exploring

14. In the passage, what can be inferred about solar roof tiles?

a. They are being used in many underdeveloped countries.

b. They can convert geothermal energy into electricity.
c. They are more expensive than solar panels.
d. They contain photovoltaic cells.

15. In the passage, how is solar energy production similar to geothermal energy
production?

a. They both require fairly simple technology.

Kasal o Kalas

2a, 2b, 3, 4, 5, at 6.

21. Anong pangkalahatang kaisipan ang mabubuo sa artikulo?

a. Wala itong epekto sa iba’t-ibang bahagi ng katawan.

b. Nakukuha ang HCV sa pamamagitan ng Dugo.
c. Madaling gamutin ang HCV.
d. Hindi ito nakakahawa.

22. Ilan ang pangunahing sub-types ng HCV?

a. 4
b. 3
c. 6
d. 8

23. Alin sa mga sumusunod and hindi maaring makapagkalat ng HCV?

a. Pagtatato
b. Acupuncture
c. Hiraman ng suklay
d. Pagbutas sa katawan
