ASSIGNMENT 1

BMCG3333

ANSWERS ALL QUESTIONS

Q1 A short shaft made from medium carbon steel AISI 1040 is subjected to combine
loading as shown in the Figure 1.1 below. The axial load Fx is 6.2 kN, the transverse
loaf Fz is 5.0 kN and the torsional load T = 25 Nm.

(a) Estimate the design factor at point A using the distortion energy theory (Von
Mises).

(b) If the safety factor is expected to be 3, determine the minimum diameter of the
shaft. (Note: If single solution could not be obtained, just simplify the equation).

= 25 Nm

= 6.2 kN
= 5.0 kN

Q2 (a) A 30 mm diameter rod of AISI 1035 steel having a ground finish and heat-
treated to a tensile strength of 750 MPa is to be placed in reversed axial loading
in normal operating environment with reliability of 99 percent. Calculate the
endurance strength of the rod.

(b) A component is machined from a plate made of carbon steel (Sut =600 N/mm2)
is shown in Figure 2.1. It is subjected to a completely reversal axial force of
100 kN. The expected reliability is 90% and the factor of safety is 2. Determine
the plate thickness t for infinite life.

Q3 (a) A 18-teeth spur pinion has a module of 5 mm and runs at a speed of 1500
rev/min. The driven gear has 45 teeth. Find the speed of the driven gear, the
circular pitch, and the theoretical center-to-center distance.

(c) The input shaft for the gear train shown in Figure 3.1 rotates at 4800 rpm.
