“The Bobo Song” by Gloc-9 Analysis

I believe that the main concern- that the composer is voicing out through this song- is with
regard to the mentality of the Filipinos in this age. He is saying that we have lost the essence of being a
Filipino, the ideal values, standards and principles that we ought to have and have been known to have
in the past. It is also being hinted that we follow false gods blindly, idols such as those that are being
portrayed by media, which caused shifts in our perception of the culture, traditions and kind of society
that we have here. An example of this would be whenever we openly welcome foreign cultures,
traditions and people and on the other hand look at our own with distaste- when we perceive what is
foreign as superior to whatever we have here. The composer refers to us as gullible, in these moments,
`as we blindly accept whatever is being thrown to us without checking whether it is credible or not. It
is this kind of thinking that brought us to the point wherein we elect national leaders from those that
we see in television and movie screens- thinking that the good and heroic characters they portray on
screen is them in actuality. It has also brought us to situations wherein “star” or entertainment news-
mostly of famous people and their private life- are given greater priority and attention compared to
news that are actually important.

We are in a point wherein we are so immersed in whatever the masses are shoving our way that
we begin to see and treat these things as if they are the better option and as if they’re what’s real. We
state things that have been shaped by conditioning without really knowing what they mean; blaming
sectors of the community and unrelated matters for problems that we have been told is their doing.

Their own thoughts and opinions come out of our mouths, like how a puppet master would
manipulate a doll into speaking with his voice. We have been this way for quite some time now-
blindly following the false gods- that the path behind us, the one that connects us to the Filipinos that
cherished our country and culture, unspoiled by whatever has tainted us in this age, is disappearing. It
is written in the song that we believe whatever we see. I agree with the sentiments of the composer. We
have made ourselves gullible to the point that we actively estrange ourselves from things truly Filipino
and because of this, we have lost the essence of being one.
