goods and services produced) of an economy over a period of time.

• Priority of growth
• A call for change
• Trans-disciplinary science

THE DEPLORABLE SITUATION

• Nature and nature’s limits

• Understanding those limits need a transdisciplinary approach
• To create policies that allow economy to grow within those limits
• Policies help us directing valuable resources toward specific end

POST-AUTISTIC ECONOMICS

• Society of Post-Autistic Economics  movement of students to reform of

economics teaching to avoid autism considering realities and constraints
of biophysical and moral environment.
• Leading to growth forever is impossible.
• It was hoped that ecologist will take over the economics and redeem the
failure of an economics that neglected nature.
• But: Most ecologist are unwilling to sully their science with uncertainties
of human affair and
• Many ecologist to have had difficulty in dealing with policies

ECOLOGISTS’ AUTISM

• Ecologists studying ecosystems without considering more then 6 billion

human suggest to accept fantasy over reality.
• Most universities educate students with narrow and confined disciplines.
• Teach them specific tools and are expected to solve world problems
• But our problems are far complex to be solved by a single discipline.
• Applying inappropriate tools also create problems rather solving those

THE CALL FOR CHANGE

• Abnormal subjectivity
• 20th century economic growth - An acceptance of fantasy rather then reality
• The most complex problem arises from the interaction between two systems
– The human systems
– Ecological systems
• These kind of problems can not be addressed from the perspective of a single discipline
• Mutually intelligible language and communication across discipline can effectively
solve these problems.
• Otherwise we will remain in an autistic world.

HALF BLIND DISCIPLINES

• Think about a problem society
currently faces. Does the
information needed to resolve
this problem fit closely within
one discipline, or needs insights
from different disciplines?
Which ones? How much
interaction is there between
them?
