English – SED1A Teaching Profession

1. It was always maintained that decision – making skills are important for teachers.
What do you think can you do to improve your ability to make good decisions as
you plan and deliver instructions?

 Decision making involves giving consideration to a matter, identifying the

desired end result, determining the options to get to the end result, and then
selecting the most suitable option to achieve the desired purpose. Teacher
decisions about the issues just mentioned ultimately will influence student
learning. And as a future teacher we need to keep in mind that: teachers make
countless decisions all day long in an effort to promote student learning.
Some decisions are made at the desk when preparing lesson or unit plans,
designing an instructional activity, or grading papers. Other decisions are
made on the spot during the dynamic interactions with students when
delivering a lesson.

As early as now we should align myself in the practices or ways in coming up

to a good decisions. I should keep in mind these techniques, which i believe is
what i really need for my future endeavour.

Trust instincts
 Intuition, gut feeling, instinct… you can call it whatever you prefer, but it is
one thing that software code will never be able to replicate. Some of the
world’s greatest leaders rely on their intuition to make the final decision and
they swear by it. I think it’s one of those things that people use every day, but
underestimate when it comes to making decisions

 As professionals, our growth depends on our ability to make a decision that

drives outcomes. So every minute spent honing that skill is going to make the
difference between being good and being the best. Keep on learning, keep on
listening, and you’ll make better decisions.

Start with the desired outcome

 The point of making a decision is to achieve a certain outcome. So that should
be a good starting point: Start with the end in mind. When you know where
you want to go, you align your efforts to getting there and it helps to minimize
distractions.

Use S.W.O.T. analysis

 S.W.O.T. analysis, which stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and

threats, is a great tool for doing this. This is a crucial step in the decision-
making process because the work you put into a S.W.O.T. analysis can serve
as a reference point for future decisions as well.
 When approaching a decision, draw a square with four boxes, one each for
strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Fill out the boxes in
relation to this decision, preferably as a team, and look for connections
between strengths and opportunities, and weaknesses and threats. If there
are strong connections between strengths and opportunities, it is a good sign
that you should proceed. On the other hand, if your weaknesses line up with
threats, you’ll want to look at other options.

2. Do you think teaching is a calling? A social service? If you do, why? If not, why?
 Teaching is a Calling

A profession can be anything, genuinely anything. A calling, on the other hand, is

more than just a job. It is a conviction from God for a particular purpose, to a
particular thing.

We all believe that teaching is merely a job, but most of us don’t know that
teaching is a noble calling. Therefore I believe that teaching is really a calling.

In my wildest dream I never thought I would open myself in teaching, I never

expected this. But when most of the people I know, they keep asking what
course will I going to take. I cannot answer that supposed to be a simple
question.

As I look around or even where I go, I always encounter children who is in need
of a proper education. Every time I see schools with children I realized how

important education is. When I see children I can see hope that someday they
will going to be an asset or they are our country’s future. Because every child is a
gift, they may have differences but after all there is a hope and beauty in them.
That maybe is one of my characteristic to see the beauty in everything that I see
and encounter.

I don’t know why but one day, in a typical day I just woke up and realize that I
want to be a teacher. I believe that in my own unique ways I can be an effective
teacher to my future students.

 Teaching as a Social Service

I believe that teaching is a Social Service, because as a teacher we work with

numerous people. With a numbers of students, colleagues and many other.

As a teacher we commit ourselves in rendering a service to the whole. Not

just for ourselves but most of all to the others. And as a future teacher I
should improve myself in working in a huge group of people for it is a good
training ground in working at a real workplace in the future.

Each of us is destined in a certain profession. We may have different paths or

journey to take but one thing is for sure we are all destined in a certain path. I
consider myself teaching as a calling that is why I aligned myself in the path of
teaching. Not everyone will understand but if you feel that you are destined in a
certain thing you won’t hesitate to take that path regardless what others opinion
may arise.

3. Why did you want to be a teacher? What about teaching most appeals to you?
What excites you when you think about standing in front of your own classroom?
What is the least appealing thing about teaching? What about teaching scares you?

 Every one of us has their own reasons in coming up a decision and it can be
influenced by the individuals that surrounds you, your own wants or desires
and even in the community that you are belong to.
I was raised knowing how important teachers are and what the hardships to
be one are. It requires a lot of courage and patience to be one. Because i am

one of those individual who came from a family of teachers. But aside from
that factor, choosing to be a teacher is my own decision.
My greatest reason is I really wanted to teach, I really wanted to give learning
that lasts to others because from then I believe that I have that courage to be
an educator.
What most appeals me is that, I love children I am enjoying when I am with
children. I love working with younger ones. That is what all of my friends
says. Children now a day’s seems to have that attitude at an early age, and as a
future teacher which has a disciplinarian side. I wanted children to learn in a
way that they are not pressured to do so. I want them to grow and exposed in
a well-mannered way.
In my years of experience in various classrooms, I have witnessed different
kinds of teachers. And as I witnessed those, I’ve already come up with the way
how I wanted to be as a teacher in my own classroom. I wanted to be a strict
teacher, who is very particular in student’s behaviour. A teacher that when in
front I wanted my students to have a full attention on what I discuss.
The only thing I scare is, what if students doesn’t want the way I Teach, what
if I did something that is not satisfactory to the students. What if I do not meet
what my students expectations to me.

4. Teachers are expected to be people of good character and role models to students.
What are the limits of this expectation? What are some points at which the rights
of the school district and the end of the right of the teacher begin?

 Teachers are expected to be a good example for their students, the individuals
who serve as a role model. Many students especially those at the elementary
level has that characteristic that they idolize their teachers. But sometimes
teachers also has their limit, sometimes their patience and understanding are
being tested.
Teachers are expected to be patient and understanding, as a teacher you need
to go extra mile just to understand and not to lose temper at your students.
Students differ in many ways I understand that, but as a teacher I am also that
typical individual who has its limit. My limit will be tested if I have students
who are:
 Rude, the ones who doesn’t respect and listen to their teacher anymore

 Those students who do not appreciate my existence as their teacher

 Being physically violent to me or to his/her classmates rather
 Doesn’t respect their teachers rule and ways in teaching.

There are some teachers who abuse their right or authority this include those
teachers who:

 Doesn’t being a good example to their students anymore

 Have done physically abused or even sexually abused
 Put children into shame by saying words below the line or by slamming
that child into shame in public or in front of other
 Having relationship with one of their students
 Doesn’t comply in the standards of school

5. Do you believe it is right for teachers to strike? Why or why not?

 No, because everyone considers teachers as a professional, the individuals

that should be respected, the ones who are supposedly to be a role model for
everyone. And we even consider teachers as the individuals who impart
knowledge that will be used not just academically but even in real life uses.
 Teachers has a strong effect to anyone, they can be a powerful factor for
others. We have that mind-set that, striking is not a good practice because it
just means that you are opposing something. And if teachers are seen to be
striking maybe some people may assume that “it is just right to strike, that it
is just okay to strike cause even professionals like teacher does it so we
should do the same”, that mind-set tho. Let us accept that we dwell in a
society with that kind of mind set which most of us adopt.

6. Do you think it is important for teachers to devote themselves to becoming

professionals? If so, what must they do?

 Yes, because when you choose to be a teacher you also have said yes to the
numerous conditions that are being assigned in becoming a teacher. In
everything we have that stereotyped practices or beliefs. And in becoming a
teacher, which is considered as professionals. Teachers are also expected to
act like one.

We believed that when we choose a certain path, like a profession it is

expected for us to devote ourselves with every aspect or with every part of us.
There is no taking back that is why as much as possible we show our best or
prove ourselves that we are in a right track. We devote our hundred per cent
efforts, skills, time and intelligence for our chosen profession.

No matter what field you work in, you probably have some aspirations of
professional success. Success may be defined in different ways by different
people, but being an informed and dedicated employee, a strong leader, and
an honest person can all make a big difference in making you a successful
professional in any career. No matter how you define your goals or what field
you work in, strengthening your professional skills, building professional
relationships, and being a self-motivated professional can help you achieve
success and satisfaction in your career.

7. At this moment, what seem to you to be the most important issues with which
teachers should concern themselves? Defend your choice. What can you do to help
bring about the changes you consider the most important?

 Change is bound to happen, as they say change is the only thing that is
constant. As our world change, the reason why everything is in connected
with technologies now a days. This change is also rampant in education. The
traditional teaching is slowly degrading, the visual aid in manila papers, the
outdoor activities without the use of technology are one of the many practices
that is not being experience by our todays learners.

That is why classroom proper or classes now a days are with the use of
technology. Where in students continue to embrace technologies because
even in learning they are using technology. Most of the teachers are facing
difficulties in dealing this type of change. There are some teachers that even
they use those gadgets like laptops, projectors they still feel difficulties.
Because even technologies change and continue to update. As time passes by
it continue to upgrade and it becomes more and more technology advance.

That is why we consider technology as an advantage because technology

ushers in fundamental structural changes that can be integral to achieving
significant improvements in productivity. Used to support both teaching and
learning, technology infuses classrooms with digital learning tools, such as
computers and hand held devices; expands course offerings, experiences, and
learning materials; supports learning 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; builds
21stcentury skills; increases student engagement and motivation; and
accelerates learning. Technology also has the power to transform teaching by
ushering in a new model of connected teaching. This model links teachers to
their students and to professional content, resources, and systems to help
them improve their own instruction and personalize learning.

The numerous seminars about ICT are a huge help for every teachers who are
not really used in using technology. But as I said these technologies continue
to change that is why workshops, seminars and trainings about this should be
more rampant.
