Abstract:

This paper discusses the multiple bands of microstrip patch antenna by keeping multiple slots
on the patch. In general, the microstrip patch antenna has narrow band, we proposed a slotted
antenna. Here, the antenna is designed to operates for wireless communication such as GPS,
UMTS and LTE applications. The numbers of slots etched are 5 which are separated by
different distance which are based on parametric analysis. To show the feasibility of this
antenna, characteristics of 13 slots antenna is compared with 5 slot antenna. Here, the antenna
is designed using FR 4 Epoxy substrate with di-electric constant ℇ𝑟 = 4.39 with a centre
frequency 1.6Ghz.The return loss and VSWR of the antenna has been improved.

INTRODUCTION

Rapid growth of wireless communications has increased the demand of mobile terminals
offering multiple features. Integration of numerous services, for example coverage of
different cellular frequencies, availability of navigation and positioning, and inclusion of Wi-
Fi is almost a basic requirement for any smart phone nowadays. Therefore, mobile terminals
are required to operate at multiple frequencies to facilitate all these services. Moreover,
mobility and flexibility of the portable devices requires them to be compact, low cost and
light weight [1].
From the past two decades, drastic changes appeared in the area of RF Technology, the size
of an antenna is reduced. The main reason by using the micro strip patch is “improvement in
the micro strip technology”. It is compact in nature. In addition to have portability aspect this
type of antenna has some advantages it is simple to incorporate with any other planar
structure [2]. This antenna is able to produce both linear and circular polarization and has
capacity to produce dual band, multi band and wide band frequencies.moreover the
microstrip antenna has some disadvantages such as high loss, narrow band width [3].In order
to overcome low return loss by utilizing multiple slotting technique is preferred.

ANTENNA CONFIGURATION

A new design of microstrip patch antenna for multi-band operation has been
proposed. The antenna covers three popular communication bands such as GPS (1.575 GHz),
4G/LTE/CDMA (2.1 GHz), and UMTS (2.4 GHz)[4]. The antenna dimensions are shown in
the Table 1.The radiating element is a combination of micro strip patch and 5 slots. The
antenna is designed by using FR4 epoxy substrate having a relative permittivity of 4.4 and
loss tangent of 0.0245. The thickness of the substrate is 1.6 mm. The size of the ground plane
is 70mm × 52.5mm.
The radiating element dimensions are 40.5 mm x 39.5 mm. The slots etched are
5 which is different in shape and separated with certain distances. The patch generates the
resonance at the lower frequency band. The slot helps to generate the higher resonances and
improve the impedance bandwidth. The position of the patch also helps to improve the
antenna performance by shifting the resonances towards required frequencies of operation [4-
5].
