Subject: Student Internship Programme

(Preamble)

This report records the work done and reflections during the period of Student
Internship Programme at Tribal Worldwide Pte Ltd (for Equator) from 1 April to 12
July 2019.

1 INTRODUCTION AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

1.1 Background

Tribal worldwide is a division of DDB Asia which focuses on innovative marketing

to build business and brands. Tribal worldwide which is refereed as Total Experience

Agency helps business in their growth through their various consulting practices.

It’s works involves business consulting for various companies and brands, creating

innovative ideas for companies to attract customer, solving various client’s problem

through technology and provides insights on client’s business through data science.
1.2 Attachment Period

Attached to the data department for the whole period of internship from 1st April to 9th

august.

1.3 Work Environment

My role in the company is as a data analyst in the data department of the company

which take on large project to provide clients the insights on the data they provide.

The department also involved in data updating and extraction from regular client’s

monthly.

The department is headed by a Yih Cheng (Head of Business Technology and Data).

This is a small department consisting of a two data strategist.

2. OBJECTIVES

The aim of this internship was to assist the data department of the company through:

● Handle data cleaning, transformation and data analyzation using my python

programming skills for client’s project.
● Handle various monthly data extraction and updating request.

3. WORK COMPLETED

3.1 Self-Training for data analytics using Python.

First 3 weeks of the internship period, I started learning python for data analytics.
After few researches on online data analytic materials and videos, I ventured into
Learning basics for python from several of these sources.

For the first few did few cleaning and transformation of data and then moved on to
modeling. This self-training involved a lot of reach work and involved challenges
such a rectifying unexpected error in codes.

Later his skill came in handy to help my colleagues with the data cleaning and
transformation processes for the project.
I also worked on some interesting task given by mentor like integrating google API
with python in order to extract data stored in google analytics. This process saves
the time of exporting large amount of data from google analytics and importing it
back to python.

3.2 Project for a non-profit international organization.

This is the very first project I worked on. This project was from an international client for a
non-profit organization. They aim motive was to understand their customer’s behavior and
boost their increase their customer contribution in events and donations. For this project, I first
worked on standardizing Columns across various data sets and also involved in translation of
data sets.

I was given the task of merging the data sets. For that I did a bit of research regarding
Different kinds of merging and for further clarification for this task I consulted with my
colleagues. After merging was done I was briefed about the need for merging the data sets
And this made easier for me to understand what they want to all insights they want to get from
these data sets.

Next I worked for cleaning the merged data sets, this involved removing null values, changing
the column into proper data type and standardizing date time formats and removing duplicates
and so on. After that I was given the task to gain some insights on the
Data sets. I gained some insights and put them in slides to shows my mentor, he was fairly
satisfied and said could improve the insights to get deeper analysis of the customers.

We also used to have timely meetings regarding the project where my colleagues share the
project status and also their work progress and findings. They would also encourage me to add
on some suggestions for improving upon the project findings.

This project overall gave me an idea about the various steps of data preparation before actually
going on to the data analytics. Also this was an opportunity for me to apply what I learned on
to an actual project. I learned how worked is distributed among different co-workers and how
meetings open up wide discussions points for improvements.

3.3 Self-training for tableau

This was a suggestion by mentor to have some basics of tableau. First I familiarized myself in
this platform and imported the data for the currently working project for the non-profit
organization. I made some graphs at first, then moved on to create graphs and charts for my
findings using python. Later I learned to create interactive graphs using tableau which made
the insights clearer and presentable. Overall, it was a good experience leaning this platform.
3.4 Training for R-studio.

R-studio was the second platform I used learned for data analytics .Some of the monthly
project uses R programming to extract and clean data, so after training for R-studio I would be
taking over these projects using R. There were total of 2 client’s projects that was done using
R. One of the colleagues trained in in this project. This colleague trained me with the basis of R
first using the example of a previously done project on R. This gave me a start to pick up the
syntax of this language and explore further. Later after training I was given few exercises to
work on based on data cleaning and extraction, I made few mistakes and errors while this
session which helped me to understand more about R language and how to rectify the errors.
Overall this helped to me gain more experience in the field data analytics.

3.5 Monthly Data cleaning, extraction and updating project.

These projects were our company client’s monthly project which had several request for
extraction, cleaning and updation using the data sets provided by the client. This project was
done using R. This project helped me to build more of my R-programming knowledge as these
Projects involved many extraction and cleaning processes. From this project I learned a new
approach of drawing out the overall flow of the program which helped me to write my program
more efficiently and quicker. Along the way I was requested to conduct a workshop for my
department co-workers who were non-programmers, for this I prepared some slides which had
a brief description about the project and the files used. This teaching session made me realize
how to conduct a teaching session effectively with proper planning. For the teaching purpose I
would draw out the overall flow of the program which I understood to be effective and then I
would move onto the line by line explanation. These sessions of teaching helped me to form
strong bonds with the team members and also boost my confidence level and my presentation
skills.

3.6 Documentation for codes.

After writing codes for the client’s project in R. My mentor gave a task to prepare
documentation. The documentation was done using Drop box paper which was suggested
By of one co-worker. The documentation prepared was in depth detail of the different
processes involved in the project I handled using R including the software installation, files
used, objectives of the project and the codes explanation.

I had also converted all the codes written in R to python. This was also helped me to build
more of my python programming skills.

The documentation I first created had been reviewed by my mentor and gave areas of
improvements which helped me to realize the mistakes and improve upon it.
3.7 Project for a law institution.

4a. REFLECTIONS ON GENERIC LIFE SKILLS

● Time management and proper planning

At the beginning I had some time management issues which my mentor pointed out.

To complete the current task and move on to other I would do my task quickly, but I

would have some errors, so I end up doing the process again. So, my other task

becomes due.

I rectified this by having a proper planning of the task before doing it which I found it

to be effective in delivering my output in time with no mistakes

● Communication

I used to do my task as per the instruction from my mentor which may not include

some details. Due to that at the end I wouldn’t to able to produce what he needed.

I overcame this by asking clarification question which helped to deliver a better

output as per the requirement

● Curiosity in Learning

What admired me the most is some of my colleagues who were non-programmers

were curious to know what I am doing, and they also suggested for a workshop

conducted by myself. I felt that I can also have inculcate this curious nature which

would enhance my learning journey.

4b. REFLECTIONS ON TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

● Data analytics through python

Data analytics using python was a skill which I had no experience with. Only

I had some experience on Rapid-miner a data analytic tool which did not use

programming. For the first 2-3 weeks I spend on learning python for data analytics. Kick

starting the learning process was a bit challenging as I had not idea where to start. After

few researches with online learning materials and videos I finally started doing the basis

with reference to various online training materials. At times of difficulties/errors I would

try to rectify by myself, if cannot I would seek the advice of my colleague. At the end of

the 3 weeks I was able to do majority of the cleaning and transformation process of data

and few modeling. I felt really satisfied with my research skills and independent

problem-solving skills.

● Data cleaning and extraction using R-studio

The basic of this skill was taught by one of the colleagues so I can take over her monthly

project based on R programming. R was different from python but very useful as most

companies uses python along with R. I can handle most project of data cleaning and

extraction using R. My supervisor appreciated me taking the initiative to learn R

programming as said it is one of the important skills for an data analyst.

● Other technical skills learned

Tableau
Analyzing the data and building interactive charts with tableau was acquired.

Google analytics
Familiarized with the dashboard and various features related to google analytics like live
website users, their time on website and so on.

Google API
Integrated Google API with python to retrieve data from google analytics.
● Suggestions for Diploma

My request would be to include certain programming courses for data analytics like
Python or R along with the powerful visualization tool such as tableau

4c. REFLECTIONS ON STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES

Good presentation skills

Seeing my work on data analytics, my colleagues wanted to conduct a workshop based

the project I handle monthly using R programming.

For presentation i included the objectives and general information regarding the project.

I would explain them the overall flow of the program and then move on to the

programming explanation part.

There were also exercise included for their practice.

I was praised and appreciated by my mentor and colleagues for putting up such a good

presentation and workshop.

Documentation skill

I was asked to document the codes I wrote in R for their reference and like a handover

document. I was suggested to used drop box paper by one of the colleagues which made

the documentation more professional. My mentor gave timely suggestions and I

improved on it and finally produced the Documentation for 4 different project I worked

on. The colleagues were really impressed with the hard-work I put into and told I was

like a professional documentation.

Time management

Time management was an area I was weak at first. Due to my lack of proper planning

and carelessness I would make silly mistake producing not the desired output which

pushes my other work behind schedule. This was a problem which was pointed out by

my mentor. Later I found a way to rectify the issues by proper planning and laying out

the aims and design of the flow of program.

Curiosity

Curiosity is one skill that I want to acquire. My mentor says that one should have a

curious mind especially in the data analytics field to find the hidden meaning in the data.

He also encourages to ask questions to one’s self on the data which can help to get better

insights on the data.

4d. REFLECTIONS ON CAREER CHOICE AND DEVELOPMENT

Tribal is fast-paced in terms of project delivery and has mostly informal code of
conduct between supervisors and workers. Interesting to know that different
departments depend on each other at different stages of the projects.

This company had wide range of careers which is mostly inclined towards the
marketing side and less of the engineering.

They are involved in digital marketing where use digital media to attract
customer/users and hence strengthen the client’s business. This trend very popular
especially agencies involved in marketing and advertising like this agency.

This agency offers a great deal of experiences which can be gained from working for
various clients with different and challenging requirements. Sometimes staff also
involve in some tanning program to complete a project according to the
specifications.

According to me this agency would be great for some one who is pursing a career in
marketing related field.

Even in data department the workers have a background of business and marketing
and data report for analyzing is done based on the perspective of marketing and
business terms.

I would like to pursue the career as a Data analyst in a company that is more inclined
to the engineering side.
5. FEEDBACK/SUGGESTIONS.

This internship had been a fruitful journey for me where I got to explore the office

life and learned a great deal of things both Technical as well as life skills. I was

welcomed warmly by my colleagues and my company supervisor who explained

about the various departments in the company and the different projects they work

on.

I was involved in actual client’s project big organizations and companies which was

really a great experience. I learned a how to work in a team and how they breakdown

their task among their different co-workers and assign deadlines.

This internship also helped me to find my potential and helped me to be independent

learner. It has enhanced my problem-solving skills through my various venture into

different kind of projects.

Through mentor meeting I learned about different careers related to data science and

various tips on how to conduct one’s self in a workplace. Also, some advice on how I

can improve myself better as a data analyst.

I learned lessons on time management, being curious to know more, having a clear

plan before actually moving on, clarifying and asking questions to avoid mistakes and

how to draft a proper documentation

This internship also helped build my confidence level in doing a presentation and

helped to get to know more people from different departments and got chance to

interact with other interns from university and get to know their university and the

courses they offer.

This internship has helped me to build my interest in pursuing a career in the field of

data analytics. Before the internship I know was a beginner doing basic data

analytics. I always wanted to venture into data analytics using programming, but this

internship gave me an opportunity to do data analytics using python and R, this also
gave to confidence to further explore the field of data science like predictive analysis

and AI.
