CHAPLET OF THE PASSION

For the relief of the Holy Souls in Purgatory

The prayers contained in this pious exercise are all indulgenced, applied to the
souls in purgatory. This chaplet is adapted from the Tagalog “Desinario para sa
mga Kaluluwa”, customarily prayed as a novena in the Tagalog regions of the
Philippines.

Leader: By the sign of the Holy Cross, deliver us from our enemies O Lord our
God. In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

All: Amen.

ACT OF CONTRITION

Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, true God and true man

All: God who created and ruled over my entire being, I am heartily sorry for all of
my sins with all my heart, and I contritely repent of all my sins which offends
Thee. Thou art my Lord, my God, and my Father Whom I have offended. I resolve
with all my strength never to offend Thee again, and to confess all my sins, hoping
that Thou O Lord wilt have mercy on me, through the Most Sacred Passion and
death on the Cross for my sake. Amen.

Leader: Open Thou O Lord my mouth

All: bless Thy holy name; cleanse my heart from vain, evil and wandering
thoughts; enlighten my understanding, inflame my will, that so I may worthily,
attentively and devoutly meditate upon Thy Passion and Death, with the Sorrows
which inflicted Thy Most Holy Mother, that we may be made worthy to appear in
Thy presence. Thou Who livest and reignest, world without end. Amen.

THE TEN PRAYERS

(to be repeated five times, like in the manner of the Rosary)

Leader: My most merciful Jesus, turn Thy gaze upon the souls of the baptized
departed, especially the soul of N. (or the souls in Purgatory).
All: Because of them Thou hast suffered and died on the Cross. Amen.

1. My Jesus through the bloody sweat which thou hast shed in thy agony in the
garden:

 PRAYER
Leader: O Lord, who to redeem the world
All: and to free us from the pains of hell, didst vouchsafe to be born amongst men,
subject to pain and to death, to be circumcised, rejected, and persecuted by the
Jews, betrayed by Thy disciple Judas with a sacrilegious kiss, and as a lamb, gentle
and innocent, to be bound with cords, and dragged in scorn before the tribunals of
Annas, Caiphas, Pilate, and Herod; who didst suffer Thyself to be accused by false
witnesses, torn by scourges, crowned with thorns, smitten with blows, insulted
with spittings, to have Thy divine countenance covered out of contempt, to be
many ways set at naught and outraged, to be filled with reproaches and ignominies,
and, last of all, to be stripped of Thy clothes, nailed to and raised high upon a cross
between two notorious thieves, to be drenched with gall and vinegar, and then
pierced with a lance, and so to fulfil the mighty work of our redemption: Saviour
most tender, by these Thy many cruel sufferings borne by Thee out of Thy love for
me, which I, unworthy as I am, yet dare to contemplate, by Thy holy cross, and by
Thy bitter death, free the souls in Purgatory from the pains of hell and vouchsafe to
bring me to Paradise, whither Thou didst lend the penitent thief who was crucified
with Thee, my Jesus, who, with the Father and with the Holy Ghost, livest and
reignest God for ever and ever. Amen.

mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate,

All: and let our cry come unto Thee!

Leader: We comment to Thee O Lord our God the soul of N. (or the souls in
purgatory) for he has (she has/they have) departed from this world. Grant we
beseech Thee to forgive his (her/their) sins, by the merits of Thy unquenchable
mercy, that he (she/they) may live in Thy presence, Who livest and reignest world
without end.
All: Amen.

Leader: I BELIEVE IN GOD,

All: the Father almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His
only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin
Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, died, and was buried. He
descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into
Heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father almighty, from thence He
shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy
Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection
of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Leader: OUR FATHER, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom
come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.
All: Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive
those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. Amen.

Leader: HAIL MARY, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among
women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
All: Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our

 PRAYER
Leader: O Lord our God, Thou hast left us as a remembrance of Thy Passion and
Death by virtue of the Holy Shroud which was wrapped around Thy holy Body
during Thy deposition from the Cross by the holy and pious Joseph, grant we
beseech Thee, merciful God through the merits of Thy Passion to bring the souls in
Purgatory to the eternal bliss of heavenly glory where Thou livest and reignest with
the Father and the Holy Ghost, God forever and ever.
All: Amen.

Leader: From the gates of hell:

All: Deliver us, O Lord!
Leader: may they rest in peace.
All: Amen.

PRAYER
Leader: Let us pray.
All: God, by whose mercy the souls of the faithful have rest, may it please Thee to
release from all bondage of sin the soul of N. (or the souls in Purgatory) who have
died here in the communion of the Heavenly Father, and through the merits of the
most blessed Virgin Mary, so that along with Thy saints he (she/they) may ever
find lasting joy in Thee; according to the indulgences and remission of sin that he
(she/they) may so desire, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Leader: Jesus most merciful and most holy, by Thy passion and death on the Cross:

Leader: Remember, O Virgin Mother of God,

All: when Thou standest in the presence of the Lord, that Thou speak good things
for us and turn His wrath from us.

Leader: Through the most sorrowful Passion and Death of our Lord Jesus Christ
and the sorrows of Holy Mary mother of God and our mother, may the souls in
purgatory find relief and glory in the heavenly kingdom.

Leader: Praised and adored ever be the most Blessed Sacrament of the Altar, and
the pure and Immaculate Blessed Virgin Mary, conceived without the stain of
original sin from the first instance of conception.

PRAYER TO ST. NICHOLAS OF TOLENTINE,

PATRON OF THE SOULS IN PURGATORY

Leader: Lord, God of holiness and light, Thou allowest not any shadow of darkness
or evil in Thy sight, and so in Thy mercy Thou grant to those who have left this
world burdened with sin, a time of purification, applying to them the spiritual
treasurers of Thy holy Church. Hear our supplications and through the merits of
Christ, the Blessed Virgin, the saints, and all Thy faithful people bring to an end
this time of waiting for our beloved dead, especially N.

In Thy providence Thou hast chosen Saint Nicholas as a special intercessor on

behalf of the departed. Hear also his fervent prayer for those whom we recommend
to Thee through his intercession.

O God, source of strength and courage, Thou gave Thy beloved preacher, Saint

hardship, serve the poor and those who suffer, and live as your true and faithful
servants.

Give ear, O Lord, to our supplications, which we offer in commemoration of

blessed Nicholas, Thy Confessor, that, as we have no confidence in our own
justice, we may be assisted by the prayers of him who was pleasing to Thee.
