Conceiving a home to celebrate the life of the recently deceased

father of the client, and building upon the rich, historic legacy of
a line of automobile industrial giants, ‘Peacock and the Woods’
rejoices the client’s bequest of a vast site. Situated within
Ahmednagar city and sited in an island surrounded by roads on
all four sides, the inherited flat site that historically belongs to
the family, is envisioned as a home within the landscape.

View into the parking and drop-off area

Translating the oasis into an architectonic form, vast, expansive spaces are defined by
linear parallel walls that overlook the landscape on all sides. The project brief is further
defined by climatic conditions, geographical location and contemporary functionality
for a four-level house with five bedrooms and a swimming pool spread over roughly
20,000 sq ft plus an outhouse that contains two bedrooms. A simple and dynamic plan
is thereby derived, with oscillating volumes as one transitions through spaces. All living
areas are organised around a triple height informal living space that acts as the central
pivot. Set amidst landscaped green on two sides, this central living area is flooded with
natural light during the day, hence distributing light and ventilation to all the varied
indoor spaces.

Private Pool

Minimum fenestrations are planned on the southern side to block the harsh sun, and
the spatial planning is in line with the traditional principles of vastu shastra. A stately
entrance deeply inset from the main road with a circular corbelled driveway demarcates
ingress while maximising privacy.

A similar theme carries over to the interior spaces, and reflects the dramatic personality
of the clients in a series of vibrant and charismatic living areas using global designs in
furniture, accessories and lighting. The outdoor furniture is all done in carbon fibres.
The entire house embraces technology, and to further enhance the environmental
performance, all active systems run on automation, efficiently optimising the use of
lighting and appliances. Integrated AV systems operated individually by iOS gadgets
are adopted to ensure ease and comfort.

Challenges posed were the lack of skilled labour, materials and modern technology,
but were easily overcome through efficient planning and using local materials while
training local craftsmen. Building upon green principles right through the core of design
and planning, even though the project is not officially certified by any of the green rating
systems, it checks all the credits required to demonstrate green building principles.
