EXPLORE THE EFFICIENCY OF BD PETROMULSER TXPL216D FOR DEHYDRATION

(DESALTING) OF KAR CRUDE OIL AND WATER EMULSIONS PRODUCE IN CPS 1

KHURMALA.
INTRODUCTION
Formation of emulsions during oil production is a costly problem, and decreased water
content in emulsions and salt, leads to increases productivity and reduces the potential
for pipeline corrosion and equipment used. The BD PETROMULSER TXPL216-D
presence causes the film layer between water droplets and the crude oil emulsion that
to become unstable, leading to the accelerated of water coalescence and its inherent
dehydration and desalting.

OBJECTIVES
• Perform a field trial with BD Petromulser TXPL216D Demulsifier in order to demonstrate
its ability to keep KAR oilfield crude within sales parameters.
• Control the salinity of the KAR oilfield crude whose limit is 60 PTB with the injection of
DB Petromulser TXPL216D.
• Determine the optimal field dose of the DB Petromulser TXPL216D demulsifier.
• Perform laboratory stress tests in order to expose the BD Petromulser TXPL216D to
extreme and complex conditions than the real ones in the field, to demonstrate that it can
maintain crude within sales specification.
• Present possible improvements to the current chemical product application design in
order to obtain the best possible performance of both the product and the surface
equipment involved in the dehydration and desalting process.

FIELD TRIAL MONITORING

The following are established as points and control analysis of treatment results with BD
Petromulser TXPL216D:
BSW analysis and salt content of streams A and B at the desalters outlet
BSW ASTM D96 Approximately every 03 hours.
Salt content ASTM D 3230 Every 03 hours approximately.
Chemical test ratio in bottles to determine dose efficiency curve.
Different bottle tests visualizing various cases or complicated situations that may occur
in the field to check the efficiency of the product (Stress test).
Periodic review of system conditions in order to suggest modifications that may improve
the chemical / mechanical dehydration process.

CRUDE CHARACTERISTICS AND CRUDE OIL QUALITY PARAMETERS

The KAR Khurmala field has a production of approximately 92,000 barrels and a
percentage of water and sediment over 4%
The salt content of the crude is around 358 PTB without treatment.
The control parameters are BSW less than 0.6% and salt content less than 60 PTB

FIELD TRIAL
DB Petromulser TXPL 216D demulsifier injection begins on November 07, 2019 at
15:00h
The initial dose is 25 PPM.
The collected data is shown below.

Graphic 1 Crude oil salt content

We have observed parameters higher than those allowed by KAR with the initial dosage,
some adjustments were made to the injection of the product in order to decrease the
salinity at the exit of the desalination equipment, and it was achieved that with a dose
between 28-35 ppm values below 60 PTB are guaranteed. It is important to monitor the
quantity and quality of the water entering the desalination equipment so that the salt
removal efficiency is adequate for the process.
The following shows the behavior of % BS & W at the exit of desalter plants.

With the initial dose only one sample was out of specifications, on 7/11 at 9:00 pm
possibly due to the change of chemical, with the adjustments made and the saturation
of the system, the other samples were within the range allowed by KAR for % BS & W
at that control point, reaching 94% compliance within specifications in Desalter A, during
the development of the field test, indicating that the demulsifier had a quick and easy
adaptation to the system.

With the proper adjustment of the dose, the samples were within the range allowed by
KAR for % BS & W in desalter B, reaching 100% compliance in the samples taken, within
specifications during the development of the field test, indicating that the demulsifier had
a quick and easy adaptation to the system.

Performance

It is worth highlighting the efficiency of this product at lower or room temperature, besides
the great quality of water, interphase, lower oil entrainment in the water, which represents
a lower consumption of clarifying products in the injection water.
The benefits of our product are not only observed in the above mentioned, are also
observed as we have seen in the previous graphs in its capacity to reduce the salt
content in the crude oil and despite having been subjected to high doses at he time of
injection in the field trial, at no time shows signs of overdose or reverse emulsion in the
crude oil which gives the confidence in our partners-clients in case of malfunction of
equipment and therefore they are in need of increasing the doses of our product in the
oilfield.
Another important factor to keep in mind using BD PETROMULSER TPXL216D is the
fact of having an oil-free water, less chemicals will be needed for final treatment, on the
other hand, it reduces the frequency of backwashing of the filters and therefore extends
the life of the filter’s beds.
If a skimmer is present in the system, the frequency of skimming is reduced and the
amount of demulsifier applied to treat that recovered oil is decreased, in general it
reduces the costs of treatment of the production water for its disposal and/or final
injection, besides extending the life of the injector’s wells.
Thinking about cost and benefits, we must point out in this report the importance of the
fact that in every BS&W tests carried out BD PETROMULSER TPXL216D maintained
absolute stability and excellent oil drying results, maintaining values between 0.1% and
0.3 % maximum, which represents greater amount of crude oil for sale.
Among many other advantages or added value when using our products, is the fact that
our company is committed to constant research and development in order to improve
our products in addition to continuous supervision and monitoring of the treated oilfield
in order to avoid any inconvenience to our customers and keeping our fidelity to our
standards of high quality services.

SUMMARY

• Perform field trial with BD PETROMULSER TPXL 216D Demulsifier in order to

demonstrate its ability to maintain Khurmala field crude from KAR within sales
specifications.
• The injection of the BD PETROMULSER TPXL 216D was performed and the system
was stabilized in compliance with the parameters established by the customer with crude
oil within specifications. BSW less than 0.6%
• Monitoring and control the salt content of the Khurmala field from KAR company, whose
limit is 60 PTB with the injection of BD PETROMULSER TPXL 216D.
• The chemical injection system is stabilized by delivering crude oil within specifications
below 60 ptb as shown in graph above
• Determine the optimal field dose of BD PETROMULSER TPXL 216D emulsion breaker.
• Optimum dose 32 ppm (with this concentration) is determined additionally, several
adjustments and analysis are made where a wide range of doses is observed without
the presence of over-treatments due to the BD PETROMULSER TPXL 216D product
• Perform laboratory tests to subject the BD PETROMULSER TPXL 216D to more
complex conditions than the real ones in the field, to demonstrate that it can maintain
crude within sales parameters.
• In laboratory tests at low temperature (22ºC) it is demonstrated that even with a
decrease in temperature the product maintains high efficiency.
• Present possible improvements to the current chemical product application design in
order to obtain the best possible performance of both the product and the surface
equipment involved in the dehydration and desalting process.
• Field diagram above is created to show current injection design and suggested design
in order to improve the efficiency of the products applied in the field and the equipment
involved in the dehydration and desalting process.

TECHNICAL RECOMMENDATIONS
Relocation of chemical injection points is suggested to improve the efficiency of chemical
treatment and optimize field operations; The suggested point is the Collector as shown
in diagram. The relocation of the emulsion breaker allows more time of homogenization
and action of the chemical on the emulsions and salt content present and previous start,
the release of water also collaborates with the decrease of salinity, speeding up the
separation of phases, optimizing equipment performance and get lower sales
specifications.
The adequacy of the sampling point at the Heaters outlet is suggested, in all chemical
treatment with emulsion breakers this is a critical control point, the output of the heating
equipment production with total emulsion break must be guaranteed.

Thank you for your priceless help and confidence in this field trial.
