SAPPHIRE

I received a Persian cat as a present for my thirteenth birthday. I have

always loved cats and had expressed my wish to own one. So, imagine my delight
when my parents bought me a Persian cat. I named her Sapphire because of her
lovely blue eyes. She was just over three weeks old. I loved her the moment I saw
her looking at me with her large eyes.

Three years later, Sapphire has grown to be an elegant cat with greyish
coat that is thick, long and shiny. Her silky fur is combed and brushed every day so
that it is tangle-free. She is a medium-sized cat with a small round head and short
nose.

Sapphire is not only my best friend, but also an inseparable part of my

family. She enjoys sitting on our laps and being patted. She is an attention seeker
and often rolls over for belly rubs. However, if we are busy around the house, she
is content with curling up on the sofa and waiting until we are free to give her the
attention she desires.

Sapphire loves the special cat food that we buy from an online pet shop.
Besides, she relishes her favourite food, fried fish which we prepare at home. Her
diet is also reinforced with Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids that help her fur
shiny.

Read the text and answer questions 25 to 34.

Dear Carl,
How are you doing? I’m fine here. Thanks for the letter you sent me last week. Sorry I
could not reply straight away on a week-long camping trip which I helped to organise for my
school’s prefect board.
Anyway, it is all done and dusted now. I am writing to you to invite you to join me on a
day trip to Langkawi Island this coming school holidays. It is a trip with my two big brothers
and a few friends. You will like their company as they are outgoing and fun-loving, just like you.
We plan to be on the island for three days and two nights.
There are many exciting things to do on the island, like taking the cable-car ride on
Gunung Mat Chincang, which is practically compulsory for tourists. Did you know that it is
steepest cable-car ride in the world? Furthermore, the view of the mountains and sea from the
topmost cable car station there will blow you away.
Next, we aim to head to Underwater World, Malaysia’s largest aquarium, boasting more
than two hundred spectacular river and marine animals, including penguins, seals, sharks and
gaint rays.
Plenty of other activities like scuba-diving and banana-boat riding are in store too. Lastly,
we will go shopping for clothes, the famous ‘gamat’ or sea-cucumber oil and handicrafts as
souvenirs.

MY CRAVING FOR JUNK FOOD

It all started when I was in Form 3. The examination was around the corner and it was then
that my craving for junk food got out of control. 35 I still cannot understand what
triggered it. Perhaps it was due to the exam stress or perhaps it was because the junk food had
addictive substance added to it. 36

I had always maintained a healthy lifestyle. 37 However, there came a time I

started craving for junk food. This, coupled with my new-found sedentary life, made me put on
weight. It was then that I decided to take charge of my life and put an end to the cravings.

Instead of snacking on junk food, I opted for healthier food instead. 38 At the same
time, I stopped snacking up on junk food because I realised that it was easier to give in to
temptation when junk food was within reach.

Eating proper meals helped to prevent hunger pangs. 39 I also started exercising
again. 40 It has been more than one year since I gave up junk food. I have never felt better.
My experience has taught me a very important lesson. I learnt that it is easy to give up. However,
we will eventually succeed if we keep on trying.
