Informal Settlements

Areas where groups of housing units have been constructed on land that the occupants have no legal
claim to, or they are occupying the area illegally. Those occupants are called informal settlers.

How informal settlements occur?

The root cause of development of slum is the economic inequality and failure of city planning. Urban
developments focused mainly on the large-scale commercial expansion while failing to provide adequate
housing project option for the working class. It is also occurring due to concentrated workforce migration.

Locations of Informal Settlements

Manila:
Tondo
Tondo is the largest of the 16 districts of the City of Manila in terms of population and land area. It is also
the most densely populated district in the city. Many of the city's slums are located here.
San Andres
San Andres is the second most densely populated district in Manila after Tondo.
Quezon City
Batasan Hills was originally planned as the National Government Center of the Philippines, and it is the
home of the Batasang Pambansa Complex, the headquarters of the House of Representatives of the
Philippines. It is also the home to a large concentration of informal settlers.
Bagong Silangan

Bagong Silangan is infamous as a squatters' area after street dwellers from central Manila were relocated
here from the 1970s onwards. The name of the barangay came from bagong silang, the Tagalog word for
"newborn". The namesake of the barangay was meant to signify "a new hope" for most of its residents
who were originally relocated from slum areas in Tondo in Manila, Commonwealth in Quezon City,
and San Juan.
Environmental Impact
Last September 2009, tropical storm ondoy hit manila, wherein it dumped a one month’s rainfall in just
24 hrs, causing the Marikina river and the manggahan floodway burst into their riverbanks. The informal
setllers are the one to blame due to their illegally built houses.
