1) Hoe has the scientific method helped us in our fight against disease?
ANS: The scientific method has helped us with modern medicine and latest technology. In
the past, people did not have this technology and many common diseases caused their
death at a very early age.

2) Write a note on better sanitary conditions available in our cities today and compare
them with what they like a hundred years ago.
ANS: Today our cities have sanitation departments. The streets are paved and well
drained. A hundred years ago, there was no proper drainage system. People threw garbage
in the streets and animals wandered through the streets.

3) What are sanitary conditions like in our villages today? How would you improve them?
ANS: The sanitary conditions in our villages are poor. There is no proper drainage system
and people throw garbage in streets. We can improve them by planning and spreading
awareness among the villagers.

4) How has the scientific method helped us in the production and preservation of food?
ANS: The scientific method has helped us by inventing agricultural machinery and
producing fertilizers and pesticides. Science has also given us methods of preserving food
like quick freeze method and dehydration.

5) We are now less fearful than our ancestors. What were our ancestors afraid of?
ANS: Our ancestors were superstitious. They believed in signs of good and bad luck like
black cat, broken mirror and number 13. We are now less fearful than our ancestors
because we are critical in our thinking.

6) How has the scientific method enabled us to get over the old fears?
ANS: The scientific method has given us a broader outlook. We are no longer
superstitious. Science has taught us that there is always a good natural reason behind
everything happening in the world.

7) What part did Astrology play in the lives of men and women in the past? Give examples.
ANS: Astrology and fortune-telling was a common practice in the past. Almost all the
people were superstitious. They used to consult magicians and astrologers.

8) Describe some of the superstitious still current in our country. How do they affect the
lives of those who believe in them?
ANS: There are many superstitions in our country. Many people believe in charms,
amulets, magic and fortune-telling. Their lives are affected by crow’s cackle, black cats and
broken mirrors.
