I. Introduction

As part of the curriculum, the 3rd year BSA, BSAT, BSBA-MM and BSBA-FM students are
expected to initiate an Educational tour on a specified destination and are out of school for
almost a week. We, the third year students were out of town and been in Cebu for 4 days. At first
I thought Cebu was a small place, but when we first landed there, tour around the place, I was
able to know that there are cities under Cebu, Cebu city itself, Mandaue city, Lapu-Lapu city etc.
Cebu became a big part of the start of our 2019 as 3rd year college student. That was the first
ship travel for some, especially for me. I was able to feel the first ship lag. But as a whole Cebu
gave us lessons and unforgettable experiences to treasure.

We headed to Cebu last February 13, 2019, and arrived there nearly 6am. We were
fetched by our assigned buses on Pier 4 and were assigned on Bus 2. We had our breakfast on
Pier Cuatro Hotel. After eating, we had our seminar about Financial Planning Process given by
Mr. Elton G. Montecillo, CPA. On the same day, we had our first visit in Gardenia Bakeries
Philippines, Inc. we manage to know and see how breads were being processed. After which, we
had our lunch at Sugbahan in Mandaue City. We were accommodated by Diamond Suites and
Hotel near Ayala Center Cebu.

February 15, 2019 we departed to Department of Trade and Industries Cebu City
Branch. DTI shared to us there different livelihood programs and how they helped micro and
macro businesses around the province. They conduct seminars and training programs for those
interested businessmen and businesswomen. They also provide machineries to those qualified
cooperatives needed for their production. After DTI we had our lunch again at Sugbahan at
Mandaue City. After lunch we went to Kenneth Cobonpue Showroom and Factory. There we
have seen a lot of world class furniture which were made by a Filipino designer. His designs our
very unique and he only used organic fiber for all his works. Their products are export quality
and we Filipinos should be proud to have an artist like Mr. Kenneth Cobonpue. Then after that
we had our dinner in Mandaue, we went back to our hotel and again used our free time roaming
around at Ayala Center.

On our 3rd day, February 16, 2019 in one of our side trips we went to the Temple of Leah. We
saw the beautiful temple made by Leah’s husband and her vast collections of different jars and
arts. After which, we’ve went to one of the most famous churches in Cebu, the Sto. Nino
Basilica and lit our candles and offered a prayer. We also went to SM Seaside and had our lunch
at Jonnie’s. After lunch we had given a time to visit the Chapel of San Pedro Calungsod. This
chapel is own by SM and beside the chapel is an ongoing construction of the 1st SM Ocean Park
in Cebu City. In the afternoon, we’ve went to Teleperformance in Cebu IT Park, a Call Center
Agent Company which is considered the largest in the world. Almost all of us we’re really
impressed by the communication skills by one of the employees of Teleperformance because she
speaks English fluently. When we’re already done there, we were given a chance to have a last
shopping in SM City Cebu before going to the port to depart in Cebu going to Ozamis City.
At exactly 7 in the evening, the ship started its navigation going to Ozamis City and at
exactly 5:15AM on February 17, 2019, the ship docked to the port of Ozamis and after that
we’ve separated ways going back to our different houses in which our family is waiting for.

II. AHA learning

During our Educational Tour in Cebu City all the establishments we visited there was an “AHA
“learning for me just like the Gardenia and Profoods. We went to Pajo Street, Lapu-Lapu
City,Cebu, where we witnessed how Gardenia Bakeries Operate. The lecturer discussed that
Gardenia Bakeries produce a superior quality of breads, Gardenia allowed us to see the
production of their breads with a freshness and superior quality , Gardenia utilizes only the finest
ingredients from all over the world to ensure Cebuanos that they can have the same high quality
and great tasting Gardenia loaf breads. I learned that the Cebu plant produces 2,000 loaves per
hour or a daily capacity of nearly 50,000 loaves. Among the wide array of Gardenia bread
products that are initially offered are Classic White Bread, High Fibber Whole Wheat Bread and
some flavoured loaves. Other loaf bread variants will also be gradually available in the market.
Gardenia breads have the qualities of good bread, exactly what consumers look for. It has the
good taste, freshness, freshly baked aroma, softness, and nutritive value that will surely satisfy
consumers.

And also we traveled to A. S. Fortuna Street, Mandaue City, Cebu, to understand how Profood
International Corporation make their dried fruit product that made their company the largest
Philippine based dried fruit producers and the standard bearer of world class processed fruit
product. From the small company that once catered only to the market, Profood International
Corporation has grown to become the leading producer of various dried fruit, preserves, purees,
concentrates, and juices.
III. How do you relate this to your Business Administration Program?

Relating this Educational Tour in my field in way of applying this strategy to the near future in
engaging business, how to attract customers, how to attract investors to invest in my upcoming
business.

We gained understanding to a lot of things, some are new stuffs for me and some are not.
Mostly, what I have learned are not about the things the company are being particular of,
actually, it’s about how Operation and Productions Management current trend and the impact it
causes in the society. In addition, we realized that we should be more particular in what we are
doing right now to face such challenge. How job mismatch happens that causes unemployment
and this caught my attention. We’re surprised that there are such certifications and trainings that
can help to determine the right job for someone and fill the job mismatch that is happening
between the academe and industry sector. It was mentioned that grades and school you’ve come
from is not a big deal anymore whether you’ll be accepted on a company but rather it’s all about
the skill you got and the certifications to prove it.

By making the tour and having those companies visited actually planted the reality of life to us.
It made us realized what to do, how to do things, why we should do, when to do things
accordingly, most common questions were answered. The exposure and engagement we had will
greatly affect our attitude towards the movement on the industry today.
IV. Discuss learning from the following:

A. Gardenia

Gardenia started in Singapore as a small bakeshop. Because of the good quality of their
bread and a strong demand of it they expanded in Asia including Philippines. They enter in
Philippine market bread and establish their factory at Laguna. They also establish a factory at
Cebu City which fully operated with 2,000 loaves per hour with a total of 50,000 loaves per day.
Cebu Gardenia is the largest producer of bread in Visayas Region and also nearby Provinces;
they are actually planning for a Gardenia factory in Mindanao.

They also offer different variety of their bread like black forest loaf, California raisin
loaf, chocolate chip, and amazing butterscotch loaf. But before they deliver it to the market it has
a long process of securing the product so that it is properly test in order to avoid consumer
dissatisfaction. It is really amazing that how they value their customer’s wants and customer’s
needs just like how the owner loves the Gardenia flower that made him come this kind of
business.

B. Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA)

During the Educational Tour in Cebu PEZA was one of the establishments we visited.
Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) helps to promote investments, grant incentives to
and facilitate the business operation of investors in export-oriented, manufacturing inside the
selected areas throughout the country as part of the Special Economic Zone. PEZA is an ISO
certified and fundamental advocates which really attract more investors. Aside from being ISO
certified they also gave incentives to the business that are registered to the PEZA to obtain best
return in their capital. For instances, corporate income tax waved for 100% for the 1st to 4th year
in operation, zero VAT when purchasing local goods and services for use in the business
activity. Within Cebu City they have already plenty of operating economic zone and a total
PEZA investment of 3.614 trillion, export of 706.285 billion, 64% of Philippine Com. Export
and 80% of Philippine Service Export.

This served that being part of PEZA was a good choice for the investors to start-up
business exportation.
C. Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)

Enabling business, empowering consumer is one of the programs of the DTI. DTI

E. Kor Landa

Kor landa is an international producer of jewelry specifically in European country part,

being producers of jewellery in European country it was our pride to be part of it. Imagine for
how many producers of jewellery in the world we are one of them and not just that we are the
largest producer of it.

While in Cebu, we visited export zone and toured the manufacturing facility of Kor
Landa Corporation based in Lapu-lapu City, Cebu. Marketing manager introduces some finished
and unfinished artwork. From there, we toured in their factory where we learned that each piece
is meticulously handcrafted by only one worker from start to finish. Workers generally
discourage to rush the production to ensure the quality standards as Kor Landa offers a lifetime
guarantee on all their products. Kor Landa inspired everyone to use local materials to their
fashion.
F. Kenneth Cobonpue Furniture Showroom

Kenneth Cobonpue is a Filipino industrial designer known for his unique designs
integrating materials through innovative handmade production process. Cobonpue’s designs
appeared in an International Magazine such as Time Magazine has called him “rattans” first
great virtuoso. His design was actually bought by one of the Hollywood couple Angelina Jolie

His been one of our prides as a Filipino to have this excellent talent excess in the
international world. For those unfamiliar with Cobonpue’s work, he’s an industrial and furniture
designer internationally renowned for his signature free-flowing designs using natural materials
like rattan, buri, bamboo, and abaca. Known for drawing his inspiration from nature, to describe
his work as organic is like calling Salvador Dali’s work surreal. He personifies the term.

100% pure genius, he is definitely someone for us Filipinos to admire and be proud of. I
absolutely loved this experience. It goes without saying that to own one of Kenneth Cobonpue’s
captivating creations would be a joy and an honor. We’ll definitely invest in one soon as we have
the resources to build our dream house in the country.

V. General Impact

Educational tour gives us ideas likewise opportunities to visit prestigious agencies or

companies that may help us visualize what we are learning at school. This activity helps us
develop our personality since social graces and etiquette are learned too by experience.
Moreover, important to every student since it is a part of our learning process to acquire more
knowledge through actual exposure to the different agencies.

Also educational tour offers an opportunity to experience. It helps students have chances to
experience a different culture, connecting with people and place in much deeper level than they
ever could in the classroom. We had an opportunity to talk to local people which can broaden our
perspective greatly. Students gain knowledge and upgrade our skills by using new concepts we
learn from our educational tour.

The tour provided valuable educational opportunities away from the classroom, without
using textbooks and other used in normal school setting. Students on educational tours can often
learn while having fun in a more informal environment.

Part of how students benefit from educational tours is by gaining new perspective on the
world. This is especially true for more extensive educational tours or trips where students travel
farther away from home. By coming into direct contact with a different environment or even a
new culture, students can better understand their place in the community and develop openness
to differences in others.
