Design of 5-storey school building for Cainta Catholic College
Carlo N. Bartolome
Quezon City
Table of Contents
The proposed project is a five storey high school building for Cainta Catholic College in Cainta, Rizal. It is
The project has a floor area of 546.71 sq. meters situated in a 600 sq. meters lot with a length of 36.00
meters and width of 15.00 meters. There are four (4) classrooms per floor, two (2) access stairs and two (2)
units of elevator. The purpose of this structure is to provide additional classrooms as the population of
students gets nearly doubled. The structure will be designed using Reinforced Concrete.
1.3 Project Objectives
1. Provide the client of a project proposal for the construction of 5-Storey School Building giving
special attention to the various constraints like economic and constructability factors that led to the
derivation of decision criteria;
2. Provide the client structural design of the building in accordance with the codes and standards; and
3. Provide detailed structural design and analysis of primary structural systems using reinforced
concrete.
The client for the proposed five storey school building is Cainta Catholic College as represented by its
President, Msgr. Arnel F. Lagarejos. The client wants the school building to complete the project as
soon as possible for immediate occupancy for the coming school year.
1. The project was designed with the accordance to the National Building Code of the Philippines
and National structural Code of the Philippines.
VALIDATION OF TRADEOFFS
BASED ON CONSTRAINTS
The building has typical floor plan from ground to fifth floor. The building consists of 20 classrooms, 4
classrooms per floor. All floors have comfort room at both ends for male and female students.
The main entrance of the building is located at the center. The two stairs are located at east and west
extremes. The building is installed with two (2) units of elevator. It is located at the center part of the
building with direct access from the main entrance. It has a rated capacity of 1600 kilograms that can carry
21 persons. The minimum internal dimension per elevator hoist way is 2.6 meters by 2.6 meters. This
elevator serves the ground floor up to the fifth floor.
Figures 2-1 to 2-7 show the architectural plans of the school building.
2.3.1 Floor Plans
There are many aspects of any design project that must be considered to determine the feasibility of a
system. These aspects are considered to be the constraints of the project and include economic,
environmental, sustainability, ethical, health and safety, social, political, and constructability. One must
consider each constraint individually to determine the practicality of designing the school building.
Upon analyzing the described realistic constraints, the constraints that greatly affect the design of five
storey school building are economic and constructability. The design of the project is resourceful enough to
anticipate potentially hazardous situations and all the factors relating to the best design decisions to
address the abovementioned realistic constraint issues.
Constructability Constraint (Time Frame)
Timely completion of the construction project is seen as the largest criterion of project success by
the client. The project needs to be accomplished for the given length of time for immediate
occupancy for the coming school year. Different technologies in engineering can be adapted for the
faster completion of the building. The proposed project is to be completed at an estimated time of
two years. In order to address that constraint, there are two trade-offs to be quantified, weighed
and compared: The One-Way Slab and the Two-Way Slab Framing Systems. The One-Way Slab
framing system will have intermediate beams that will cost extra concrete and formworks. As for
the Two-Way Slab, the framing of the structure doesn’t have extra beams but the shorter span of
the slab carries a particular load which means more reinforcement bars are needed on those
particular beams.
Economic Constraint (Cost)
Another limiting factor of the design project is the economic constraint. The client is concerned with
the overall profitability of the project and its accountability. The cost of materials shall be
considered without sacrificing its quality. The slab system is chosen for trade-offs since it
comprises a large volume of concrete and reinforcement bar pieces compared to other structural
members. In order to optimize the cost efficiency of the structure. It is important to know the
difference between these two slab system, how it is used and the advantages of including it in the
construction project. Once the two are finalized and evaluated, the best option or the most
economical option will be the one that the designer will consider.
Serviceability (Deflection)
The two structural designs will be deliberated according to its serviceability. To address this
constraint, the ability to carry the loads will be provided and to be investigated through the
member’s deflection and stiffness. The design which appears to be stiffer than the other will be
considered to have a greater serviceability.
3.2 Trade offs
Trade off optimization among the two constraints is significant for the improvement of the overall benefits of
construction project. This project considers the benefits of several alternative structural schemes. By doing
this during preliminary design stage, it can be ensured that the right structural solution is chosen to suit the
client’s needs for an economical and constructible five storey school building.
This project distinguishes what type of framing system suits better for the school building. These types of
framing methodology are the project trade-offs and these are the following:
1. One way slab framing; and
2. Two way slab framing.
Using the model on trade-off strategies in engineering design (Otto & Antonson, 1991), the importance
of each criterion (on scale of 0 to 5, 5 with the highest importance) was assigned and each design
methodology’s ability to satisfy the criterion (on a scale from -5 to 5, 5 with the highest ability to satisfy
the criterion) was likewise tabulated. For this project, the constructability component is more important
than the economic component because the five storey building is needed as soon as possible for the
coming school year. Therefore, the constructability constraint and economic constraint are given with
importance factors of 5 and 4 respectively.

Since the criterion’s importance is subjective, its value will then depend on the client’s and designers’
decision. Subsequently, the design of the framing methodology is subject for deliberation; the client
wants the immediate completion of the school building. Constructability constraint was given an
importance of 5. The economic constraint is given an importance of 4. Its significance is based on
how to make as cheaper as possible.
Constructability Assessment
The labor for the construction of Two-Way Slab Framing System will need more workers compared
to the One-Way Slab Framing System.
Economic Assessment
The designers calculated the difference of the two roofing slab methodology based on the economic
constraint. Based on the initial cost formulated by the designers, the One-Way Slab Framing system
is cheaper than the conventional considering the volume of concrete and reinforcement bars that will
be used.
Serviceability Assessment
In the serviceability constraint, the deflections of the member of Two Way and One Way Slab
exemplify smaller deflections compared to the deflections of the members of Two Way Slab.
Therefore, the One Way Slab was given a much higher value compared to the other design.
The designers provided cost estimates for the both roofing methodology. Through this estimates, the
designers can be able to come up with which of the following type of framing will win for economic
and constructability constraint. The initial cost estimates were elaborated in Appendix B of this paper.
The designers consider the cost provided in the Philippine Market.

The designers some come up with the design of the school building with accordance to the following
codes and standards:
1. National Building Code of the Philippines
2. National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP) vol. 1-2010 edition (PD1096)
The National Building Code of the Philippines (PD 1096).The National Building Code of the
Philippines, also known as Presidential Decree No. 1096 was formulated and adopted as a uniform
building code to embody up-to-date and modern technical knowledge on building design, construction,
use, occupancy and maintenance. The Code provides for all buildings and structures, a framework of
minimum standards and requirements to regulate and control location, site, design, and quality of
materials, construction, use, occupancy, and maintenance.
The National Structural Code of the Philippines 2010.This code provides minimum standards to
safeguard life or limb, property and public welfare by regulating and controlling the design, construction,
quality of materials pertaining to the structural aspects of all buildings and structures within its jurisdiction.
The provision of this code shall apply to the construction, alteration, moving, demolition, repair,
maintenance and use of any building or structure within its jurisdiction, except work located primarily in
a public way, public utility towers and poles, hydraulic flood control structures, and indigenous family
dwellings.
Load Combinations. As stated in the National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP), reinforced
concrete structures shall be designed using the Ultimate Stress Design (USD) method using the following
load combinations:
U = 1.4(D+F) (203-1)
U = 1.2(D+F+T) + 1.6(L+H) + 0.5(Lr or R) (203-2)
U = 1.2D + 1.6(Lr or R) + (f1L or 0.8) W (203-3)
U = 1.2D + 1.6W + f1L + 0.5(Lr or R) (203-4)
U = 1.2D + 1.0E + f1 L (203-5)
U = 0.9D + 1.6W + 1.6H (203-6)
U = 0.9D + 1.0E + 1.6H (203-7)
The Engineering design of the structure was done with accordance to various codes and standards.
The proposed structure focuses exclusively in the use of Reinforced Concrete in drafting the
substructure and superstructure of the building. Different codes that are used in the design were
specified and elaborated in Chapter 3.
4.2 Structural Design
Geometric Modeling
Figure 4-1 shows the process in structural design of the five storey school building. The first step is
to generate the geometric model of the structure using AutoCAD and STAADPro. After which is the
setting of material properties for all structural members wherein the material to be used is
Reinforced Concrete. The loads specification depends on the type of structure. These loads are live
load, dead load, seismic load and wind load. Then, the structure is analyzed and designed using the
obtained structural data. Finally, the details of the designed members and sections are drawn and
scheduled.
After the structural design of the building using the two tradeoffs, the raw designer rankings shown in
chapter 3 are validated. These tradeoffs are measured based on the constraints using the details of design
of both tradeoffs. Through this, right structural solution can be chosen to suit the client’s needs for an
economical and constructible five storey school building.

Table 4-3 shows the final designer rankings of one way and two way Slab based on constructability,

Therefore, for this project, Two-way slab gets is adapted since it is more constructability, serviceability and
economical than one way slab.
4.7 Influence of Multiple Constraints, Tradeoffs, and Standards in the Final Design
In the aspect of design, the performance of the each system is an important part. Designers have
considered the performance of the two types of framing systems in terms of their cost and construction
duration. Constraints are the limits and necessity of the designs that allow it to function correctly and
provide the client with a pleased design.
Based on the constraints stated by the client, such as the specified duration and budget for the structure,
the structural design has been accomplished in order to determine the design alternatives that will satisfy
client’s requirements. Designers are now able to choose between the two types framing system namely
one-way and two-way system.

CHAPTER 5: CONCLUSION
The Engineering design of the structure was done with accordance to various codes and standards
that were specified and elaborated in Chapter 3. The proposed structure focuses only in the use of
Reinforced Concrete in drafting the substructure and superstructure of the building.
The structural parts of the design were able to pass the necessary test for adequacy needed for the
design. The details of the structural members were specified in this paper and the cost estimates
were also provided for the client.
Concluding up the design of the school building, the designers considered the use of the Two-Way
Framing System as the framing technology for it will help the client save at least 20 % of the estimated
cost for structural or almost 617,050.041in Philippine Peso. In terms of constructability, the designers
have also proven that the use of Two-Way Slab Faming System takes less time rather than the One-
Way Slab Faming System
The designers have proven also that the strength of the Two-Way Slab Faming System used has
almost the same strength with the One-Way Slab Faming System though they have differences
between the spacing and laying of bars. The designers conclude that the application of Two-Way
Slab Faming System is an effective way to minimize the expenses for the whole structure without
reducing much strength.
