Title: Mitosis on Onion Root Tip


Introduction:
Cell division is important in organisms. It is needed for growth, replace old or damaged cells, and
a form of reproduction in single-celled beings. There are two types of cell division, meiosis and mitosis.
This laboratory activity focuses on mitosis. The cells in the onion root tip is examined under the
microscope and the phases of mitosis are observed.
Materials:
~ PPE ~ Iodine ~ Onion Root (stored in ethyl
alcohol overnight)
~Binocular Compound Light ~ Dropper
Microscope ~ Glass Beaker (100mL)
~ Forceps
~ Glass Slide and Cover Slips ~ Cutter/Scissors

Procedures
First, wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and ready the materials that will be needed.
Use cutter or scissors and forceps to obtain a small onion root tip and place it on a glass slide. Get the
dropper to stain the onion root with iodine. Wait for it to dry and then put a cover slip over it. Observe it
under the microscope and adjust the objectives depending on magnification needed.
