ASSIGNMENT, 31-10-2019
Last date for submission: 11-11-2019

1. (a) A stream of warm water is produced in a steady-flow mixing process by combining 1.0 kg s-1 of
-1
cool water at 25°C with 0.8 kg s of hot water at 75°C. During mixing, heat is lost to the surroundings
at the rate of 30 kW. What is the temperature of the warm-water stream? Assume the specific heat
of water constant at 4.18 kJ kg K-1.

(b) Liquid water at 25oC flows in a straight horizontal pipe, in which there is no exchange of either
heat or work with the surroundings. Its velocity is 12 m/s in a pipe with an internal diameter of 2.5
cm until it flows into a section where the pipe diameter increases to 7.5 cm. What is the temperature
change? (Data: Cp = 4.184 J/g.oC)

2. (a) 220 kg of CO2 gas at 27oC and 1 atm is compressed adiabatically to 1/5th of its volume. It is then
cooled to its original temperature at constant volume. Find Q, ΔU and W for each step and for the
entire process

(b) Prove the principles of Carnot Theorem

3. (a) Two iron blocks of same size are at distinct temperatures T1 and T2, brought in thermal contact
with each other. The transfer process is allowed to take place until thermal equilibrium is attained.
Suppose, after the attainment of equilibrium, that the blocks are at the final temperature T. Find the
total change in entropy of the process.

(b) A 30 m3 tank contains 14 m3 of liquid n-butane in equilibrium with its vapor at 298.15 K (25°C).
Use Pitzer correlation to estimate the molar volume of n-butane vapor in the tank. The vapor
pressure of n-butane at the given temperature is 2.43 bar.
Data: Tc = 425.1K, Pc=37.96 bar, ω=0.200.

(c) An ideal gas CP = 7R/2 is heated in a steady flow heat exchanger from 70 oC to 190oC, by another
stream of the same ideal gas entering at 320oC. The flow rates of the two streams are the same.
(i) Calculate ΔS of the two gas streams for countercurrent flow
(ii) What is ΔStotal?
(iii) If heating stream enters at 200oC, what is ΔStotal?

4. (a) Prove
(b) Derive the following thermodynamic property relation

5. Determine the thermal efficiency of the the power plant shown in below Figure, assuming turbine
and pump eficiencies of 0.75. If its power rating is 80000 kW, what is the steam rates from the boiler
and what are heat transfer rates in the boiler and condensor.

6 (a) Heat in the amount of 150 kJ is transferred directly from a hot reservoir at T H= 550 K to two
cooler reservoirs at T1 = 350 K and T2 = 250 K. The surroundings temperature is Tσ = 300 K. If the
heat transferred to the reservoir at T1 is half that transferred to the reservoir at T2, calculate:
(a) The entropy generation in kJ K-1
(b) The lost work

(b) Derive the equation for thermal efficiency of the gas-turbine engine.

7 (a) A heat pump is used to heat a house in the winter and to cool it in the summer. During the
winter, the outside air serves as a low-temperature heat source; during the summer, it acts as a high-
temperature heat sink. The heat-transfer rate through the walls and roof of the house is 0.75 kW for
each kelvin of temperature difference between the inside and outside of the house, summer and
winter. The heat-pump motor is rated, at 1.5 kW. Determine the minimum outside temperature for
which the house can be maintained at 293.15 K (20°C) during the winter and the maximum outside
temperature for which the house can be maintained at 298.15 K (25°C) during the summer.

(b) The contents of the freezer in a home refrigerator are maintained at 253.15 K (-20°C).The kitchen
temperature is 293.15 K (20°C). If heat leaks amount to 125000 kJ per day, and if electricity costs
$0.08/kWh, estimate the yearly cost of running the refrigerator. Assume a coefficient of
performance equal to 60% of the Carnot value.
