- In mathematics, factorization or
factoring consists of writing a number
or another mathematical object as a
product of several factors, usually
smaller or simpler objects of the same
kind.
1. 2x2 + 5x + 3 = 0
In this one
A = 2, b = 5, c = 3
2. x2 - 3x = 0
b=3
Example:
x2 + 9x + 8 = 0 (x + 1)(x + 8) = 0
(x + 1) (x + 8) = 0
x + 1 = 0; x + 8 = 0
d. Solve each resulting equation.
x + 1 = 0 x + 1 – 1 = 0 -1
x = -1
x+8=0x+8–8=0–8
x=-8
For x = 1:
x2 +9x = - 8
( -1 )2 + 9 ( - 1 ) = - 8
1–9=-8
- 8=-8
For x = - 8
x2 +9x = - 8
( - 8 )2 + 9 ( - 8 ) = - 8
64 – 72 = - 8
- 8=-8
Both values of x satisfy the given
equation. So the equation x2 + 9x = - 8
Is true when x = -1 or when x = -8.
2. Activity
9x2 – 4 = 0
3. Analysis
ax2 + bx + c = 0
Here are examples of quadratic equations in the standard form (ax² + bx + c = 0):
1. 6x² + 11x - 35 = 0
2. 2x² - 4x - 2 = 0
3. -4x² - 7x +12 = 0
4. 20x² -15x - 10 = 0
Here are examples of quadratic equations lacking the linear coefficient or the "bx":
1. 2x² - 64 = 0
2. x² - 16 = 0
3. 9x² + 49 = 0
4. -2x² - 4 = 0
Here are examples of quadratic equations lacking the constant term or "c":
1. x² - 7x = 0
2. 2x² + 8x = 0
3. -x² - 9x = 0
4. x² + 2x = 0
What is polynomial?
An expression of more than two algebraic terms, especially the sum of several terms that contain different powers of the same variable(s).
The equations formed with variables and exponents and coefficients are called as polynomial equations.
What is Coefficients?
A numerical or constant quantity placed before and multiplying the variable in an algebraic expression (e.g. 4 in 4x y).
