Overview
• Ease of Operation
• Controllability
• Productivity
• Versatility
May 2002 Cat® D3G, D4G, D5G vs. Deere 450H, 550H, 650H 3
Ease of Operation
Ease of Operation. The Caterpillar G-Series track-type tractors are designed for easy operation and
outstanding productivity.
• Seven adjustable air vents in dash • Under seat heater and vents blow air across
feet only
• Vents blow air directly on operator for
increased operator comfort • Heater fan motor units can be contaminated
during washing
• ROPS canopy heater; fan can be used
to circulate air in summer conditions
4 Cat® D3G, D4G, D5G vs. Deere 450H, 550H, 650H May 2002
Ease of Operation
• 10% more glass area than Deere for improved • Good visibility
visibility
• Good line of sight to blade
• Excellent line of sight to blade
• Door latch restricts peripheral view
May 2002 Cat® D3G, D4G, D5G vs. Deere 450H, 550H, 650H 5
Ease of Operation
• Vertical and fore/aft armrest adjustment on seat; • Vertical armrest adjustment only on seat;
requires no tools for adjustment requires tools for adjustments
• Caterpillar Comfort seat includes lumbar • Suspension seat offers less adjustment and
support and other adjustments to fit any support than Caterpillar Comfort seat
operator
• Smaller, dash-mounted footrest—covers only
• Large, dash-mounted footrests for excellent half of the foot
stability during downhill dozing
• Less durable, plastic floor-mounted footrests
• Adjustable steel floor footrests for operator
comfort and support • Cupholder and tie down for lunch box not as
conveniently located
• Conveniently placed cupholder and tie down
for lunch box • Plastic vandalism guard has reduced strength as
compared to Caterpillar steel vandalism guard
• Steel vandalism guard to protect the dash
and instruments from damage (canopy • Knee cushions, cup holder, lunch box and large
machines only) rear view mirror are all optional
6 Cat® D3G, D4G, D5G vs. Deere 450H, 550H, 650H May 2002
Controllability
Controllability. The outstanding control of the D3G, D4G and D5G results in superior productivity.
• The new joystick has three simple detented • Detented F-N-R joystick lever with similar
positions for travel: forward, neutral and reverse functions as Caterpillar joystick
• Smoother modulation

Productivity
Productivity. The G-Series outperforms the competition for better results on the job site.
• More useable blade capacity • Spill plate for load retention (notice paint
on spill plate)
• Adjustable blade pitch optimizes performance
in different ground conditions • Spill plate is accounted for in calculation for
blade capacity but in most job applications it
• Four cell box section design for stronger and does not provide useable blade capacity
more durable dozer blade
• Non-adjustable blade pitch link; requires
• Deeper moldboard for increased rolling action purchase of additional size links in order
and greater productivity to adjust blade pitch
• Four piece cutting edge provides easier • Three cell box section design not as strong and
serviceability durable as four cell Caterpillar blade design
8 Cat® D3G, D4G, D5G vs. Deere 450H, 550H, 650H May 2002
Productivity
• Inherently balanced, six cylinder Caterpillar • Four cylinder 4045 diesel engine has 9% lower
3046 diesel engine provides low vibration, displacement to horsepower ratio
superior performance and exceptional
responsiveness • Lacks luggability and smoothness of a
six-cylinder engine
• Designed specifically for small to medium
sized earthmoving machines • The 4045 is a wet-sleeved engine that has
less internal cylinder wall strength than the
• 25% torque rise at 1400 RPM provides Cat 3046 engine
increased lugging force during heavy loads
May 2002 Cat® D3G, D4G, D5G vs. Deere 450H, 550H, 650H 9
Versatility
Versatility. A new hydrostatic winch, parallelogram ripper and Product Link make the G-Series
tractors even more productive on the job site.
• 18 144 kg (40,000 lb) line pull hydrostatic • Mechanical drive winch with option of standard
winch with infinitely variable speed control or slow speed
• Increased throat clearance of 171 mm (6.75 in) • Less line pull than Caterpillar hydrostatic winch
• Four functions: power-in, power-out, break-off • More effort required to control functions
and free spool are standard equipment
• Power-out is an option
• No clutch that needs maintenance
10 Cat® D3G, D4G, D5G vs. Deere 450H, 550H, 650H May 2002
Versatility
• Parallelogram ripper with angled shanks for • Parallelogram ripper has straight shanks
better ground penetration that deliver less ground penetration than
the Caterpillar ripper
• 360 degree forestry guarding package available
from factory
May 2002 Cat® D3G, D4G, D5G vs. Deere 450H, 550H, 650H 11
Owning and Operating Costs
Owning and Operating Costs. The G-Series tractors deliver low owning and operating costs.
• Seven bottom rollers on D4G and D5G for • No full length guarding available; could result in
better stability and grading ability increased contamination and shorter service life
• Strutted link assembly on all three models for • Six bottom rollers
increased durability and longer service life
• Non-strutted links on the 450H make the link
• Caterpillar-exclusive Rotating Bushing Track assembly weaker, therefore decreasing the seal
(RBT) option for the D5G eliminates the assembly life
need to turn pins and bushings, resulting in
greatly reduced owning and operating costs. • No rotating bushing track option available
RBT increases uptime by eliminating the
downtime for turning pins and bushings.
This same RBT is used on the larger, heavier
Caterpillar D5M track-type tractor.
12 Cat® D3G, D4G, D5G vs. Deere 450H, 550H, 650H May 2002
Owning and Operating Costs
• Protected blade hose routing on the C-frame • Steel wire bundled together with hydraulic
for increased service life and safety hoses can cause wear and tear problems during
operation
• Adjustable pitch link provides a solid and
adjustable link between the blade and the • A non-adjustable fixed pitch link needs to be
top of the tilt tower on the C-frame replaced each time the operator changes/adjusts
the pitch on the blade
May 2002 Cat® D3G, D4G, D5G vs. Deere 450H, 550H, 650H 13
Owning and Operating Costs
• Maintenance-free turbine precleaner can extend • No precleaner, just a cover for protection
air filter service intervals up to 20% against rain
• Easy access to daily service points • Aluminum hydraulic oil cooler and radiator
could shorten service life especially in
• Steel radiator and oil cooler for longer life sandblasting environments
• A convenient handle on engine cover makes • No handle on engine cover makes it difficult to
it easier to service engine remove/install side covers when servicing engine
