Some of the most common joints being used for welding are the lap joints, butt joint,

single joint, double

joint, chain riveted joint, zig zag riveted joint, and diamond riveted joint. The lap joint has their surfaces
overlap while a single rivet is placed in the coinciding hole. For the butt joint two work pieces are joined
edge to edge in one straight line. The clamping is done using an external cover and drilled through the
holes placed. A single joint is where more than one rivet is placed along a single row while a double joint
has two rows of rivets. A chain riveted joint is where the rivets lie opposite from one another in straight
lines. The zig zag riveted joint has staggered rows of rivets not complementing each other. The last joint
is the diamond riveted joint is where the rivets are placed in rows which are broader on the butt end
while tapering away from the butt at opposite edges forming a diamond shape.

The use of riveting is most commonly found in the fields of aircraft assembly, construction, ship
construction, jewelry making and automotive parts assembly. Riveting in aircraft assembly ensures that
the material’s properties like its ability to withstand vibrations and its flexibility remain the same. the
only damage the materials endure is from the drilling and forces exerted by the riveting. In construction
rivets are used to strengthen different steel structures as well as provide stability in complex structures
using more than 10 pieces of steel. Riveting is wildly popular as a fastening method in the construction
industry. Ship construction we see countersunk rivets in contact with water for the purposes of reducing
drag and improving water tightness. Jewelry making is another place we see “cold connection” riveting
and because of its durability is popular even until today. Riveting can also be seen in automotive parts
which are used for structural repairs and mounting and attaching of parts and accessories to the
automotive in question.

Now we will be discussing about the processes involved in hot and cold riveting as well as some of the
tools necessary in each. For hot riveting the tools we will need are tongs, riveting gun, dolly, rivets,
countersunk drill bits, and drill. The steps involved in hot riveting are to heat the furnace, drill the holes,
place the rivets on the furnace, wait for the rivets to get hot, then use tongs to get the hot rivets and
place on the holes and finally use the dolly to hold the head while the tail is being rammed by the
riveting hammer. For cold riveting on the other hand the tools that we will need are a riveting hammer.
A riveting gun, dolly, malleable rivets, and a drill. Cold riveting is a simpler process where we begin at
drilling the holes, placing the rivets into those holes, use a dolly to hold the rivet in place and finally
using the hammer or the rivet fun on the end of the rivet to deform it. The raw materials usually used
for riveting are soft aluminum alloy, stainless steel, copper, and monel which are a group of nickel alloys.
