Cells are the basic units of life and are defined by their plasma membranes. They contain DNA, RNA, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids and have organelles that perform specialized functions. The cell theory states that all living things are made of cells, new cells are produced from existing cells, and the cell is the basic unit of structure and function. Cells were first observed by Hooke and Leeuwenhoek in the 1600s using early microscopes and cell theory was developed from their observations and those of other scientists throughout the 1700-1800s.
